Fans ALarm —An alarm of fire was started last night, whioh brought out the companies. There was no damage done by fire. and the alarm showed that better feeling exists among cur firomen than was supposed. Arch bishop of Baltimore, It WILE BE SEEN, by reference to our ad- vertisizg columns, that Chubb Brothers are in the market for land warrants. Warca Raturnns.—The docket at the guard house shown aclean sheet this morning. We are probably indebted for it to the good sense < those who are in charge of the peace of the city. Our Municipal Elections. Mr. Epitor : Anold fogy asks a small space in your journal to say afew words to his fel- low citisens in relation to our coming sity elostions. As all old fogies invariably do, and everybody else should do, I always wai' to see who are the candidates, and then lock into their qualifications for the offices which they desire to fill. I do not know any time more necessary to foliow this precept than the presen’, when the offices to be filled, are thore of tke mo. vital importance to the interests and petits. of the oity of Washibgton The Register. Collector, and Surveyor, com- Prise these offices. I propose to look into the qualifications of each of the candidates and present them fairly Those for Register are Mr. McCormick and Mr Douglass, the former I have known for a long time, and have trans ed much business with him, and have found bim accommodating to the pub- lic, ready and quick. and practically 2c quainted ¥ith the duties of his office. and a Choreugh accountant. I hazard nothing in saying tha‘ our city could not bo better served. I kaow vary little of his opponent. I have no doubt but that Mr. Deouzlags is a clever fellow, bat to fill such an office something el-c is required to make a tman competent. I shail therefore vote for Me McCormick As to Mr. Roohe, I have known him, in com tow oiti- lot in the neighborhood; the boy, unaccustomed / 2°48, for along time, and do not hesitate to to d iving. having upset it. Mr Eprroz: A few words will answer this card The proposition to ‘request the judges of elceticn to invite two gentlemen of each of the two parties to be present at the counting of the votes,’’ was made by Mr. Houston, one of their own party, and Mr Fitzpatrick, at the suggestion of hiscolleague, wrote out the resolution. It was passed by a large majori- ty—Mr. Reed, of the Second, Mr. Clarke, of the Sixth, and Mr. Pearson, of the Seventh Wards, voting against it. Now, if these gen- tlemen’s honesty is impugned, it is by their ' own friends; but this is all a miserable ex ouse; and if they, with the other judges in refuse the presonce of one of their opponents at the counting of the bal- lots, then they give good cause for suspicion, and their opp nents are compelled of neces- sity to ask tneir friends to vote openly, so that the tally may be kept outside as a oheck on the j:dges. AN ALDERMAN, “Wasniguosea Gigartea.”—The clipper tip Thomas Watson, jast arrived from San Francisoo, ciseharged yesterday the bark of the “Washingtonea Gigantea,’’ the largest tree im the known world The tree was 21 feetin diameter at the base, (or nearly 100 in cirouwferencs;) 363 feet in height, and 160 feet tothe iret !imbd The treeis said to be perfeetly proportioned, the diam: being the teins each way, and the body as straight ss &u arrow. The bark bas been taken off to the height of 116 feet, at which point the diameter is 15 feet6inehes. The bark is 1 foot 6 inches ly tapers ont toward the top to 2 or Sinches.—lV. ¥.
