EVENING STAR. TO A TOLLING BELL. BY BARRY BRAKE. Toil, toll, toll! Pour out through the :everent air, The note of thy tale— The tone of thy wail, And the melody of thy despaiz ! Toll, toll, toll! While the midnight is dark ang still ' The sleepers in bed Shall dream of the dead, As the sound goes o’er valley aud hilt. Toll, toll, toli* Thou besrest a burden of woe! And strangers who hear, {n their hearts shal! bear A token of more than they know. Toll, toll, toll! Be the interv :ls mute and loug! The. bushing shal! more ‘Than the clamor out-pore,— Like a pause and a cadence in song. Toll, toil, toll! And the stars above are all But the eyes are glazed That should be raised fn wonder and praising to-night. Toll, toll, toll! But eh for the heart that is cold— Ice-cold is the breast, That is lying at rest In the cerem~at’s entwining fold. Toll, toll, toll! And oh fer the heart that is bowed— That is bowed more low In tts abject woe, ‘Thon the cold heart is, in ita shroud. Toil, toll, tolt! And hush, for the dirge is o’er! MUSICAL EPIGRAM Saye Hossini to Braham,—“I'll teil you one thing, When you've lost all ycur teeth, Mr. Braham, how are say? Braham. “Ah mio diletto, nust do like your master, and sing in fales- setto.”? eo na SoMETHING FOR THE Lapigs.—There are writers who are continually giving unsolicited advice to the ladies, when they might just as well, and with equal propriety, other sex. Asan example of the system, the London Gazette contains information which it considers “ important,” for the ladies, ‘‘in regard to the manner of placing their lips when they desire to look amiable, dignified, &c. It says that when a a would compose her mouth to @ bland and serene character, she should just before entering the room say besom, and keep the expression into which the mouth subsides, until the de- sired effect upon the company is evident. Tf, on the other hand, she wishes to as- sume a distinguished and somewhat no- ble bearing not suggestive of sweetness, she should say ine the result of which 1s infallible. If she would make her mouth small and pretty, she must say Jip; but if the mouth be already small, and needs enlarging, she must say cab- buge. Ladies, when having their da- guerreotypes taken, may observe these rules with some advantage. i7-We get the following from Col. Smith’s late work, Managerical Coup d’ Etat. On the second night we performed “Pizarro,” my brother acting the part of Rolla. Inthe last act, after seizing the child, and as he was rushing up towards the bridge, he observed a tall negro holding a tea cup full of blood, (rose pink,) which was wanted almost imme- diately on the other side of the stage. As he passed, he said to the negro: “Here, boy, carry that blood round to me ou the otherside—I want it the mo- ment I cross the bridge.” Away dashed Rolla, bearing the child aloft, a volley of Spanish musketry; and turning to cut away the bridge with his sword. what was his horror to see the tall negro walk upon the stage, between the waters, and, in full sight of the au- dience, holding the cup in one hand and stirring up the contents with the fore- finger of the other, and hear him exclaim: “Here, Massa Smith, here’s your blood.” i ordered the drop to be lowered im- mediately, to shut out the ludicrous scene. i cceeaieiniaiiaanitamienmmaacmenemeemettecen MOVEMENTS OF OCEAN STEAMERS.
