They are charged with assaulting and attem, to reb a Mr. Coxson on the Satur- day night previous on M strest north. Their names are Frank Bell, George Wilson, Jobn Hanson, alias Mann, and Danl. Hall. Some of the evidence against them is very tive, showing that Mr C. was struck on the head with a piece of marble, and when down one of the villaiss went to him and searched him. Not getting probably what he wanted, he tomeat and stamped upen Mr. C. and wont off. Justice Donn, between 12 and 1 o’clock, hearing of the outrage, pro- cured the assistance of four or five members of the iliary guard, and went to the “ cas- tle.” They in vain knocked for admittance; the brothers in their fortress refusing to sur- render. The besiegers failing to gain ingress by quiet means, proceeded to force open the door, in which effort they, after much toil, succeeded, making use cf billets of wood for that purpose. The assailants finding the selves surrounded by the invaders, inglo- riously surrendered. Justice Donn committed the brothers Cusick to jail to await trial. [commosicatap Sr. Vincexr’s Onpuax Asyium.—The citi- sons of Washington are generally interested, more or less, in ull ita institutions for charity, and in none have they taken deeper interest than in the Orphan Asylum, foended many = since by the venerable patriarch, Father jatthews, who was looked upon, indeed, as a “father” by all Christians of this community, without distinction, as was sufficiently mani- fested by the universal respect paid to, and confidence reposed in him, not only by his own fiock, bat by the clergy and laity of other denominations. This institution, called “ $t Vincent's Orphan Asy!um,”’ was dear to his heart, and while in heal:h and vigor, was the object of hia unceasing care and solict- tude, and in death was remembered, as those slone can remember whose heart and seul are governed by pure charity. It is understood that he ueatbed to this institution, ub- stantial evidences of his paternal and undy- ing leve and eolicitude for its welfare, exten- sion, and perpetuity. His bequest iz under- stood as having specified his donations sepa- rately to the fema/e branch and to the ma/e branch. - It is well known to the community of Wash- ington, that some years since there was flourishing male branch of this Asylum, where aboct fifty orphan boys were eupported and educated, and a large number of day scholars of tender ags were taught the usual branches of a plain education, whica male branch was interrupted, for the time being only, by the withdrawal of thoze who had it in charge. It will also be remembered, that in the autumn of a on Matthews and the other tros- tees of St. Viccent’s Or lum, pub- lished their d ieomee 46 poe fonda and re-establish male branch, and it was again re-established ander the charge of the “Christian Brothers,” who hed already ool- lected ‘al erphan boys and a day achool of seve undred scholars. But these Chris- tian Brothers have been withdrawn from their engagements with the trustees of 3:. Vin- cent’s Orphan Asylum, to the detriment of charity and distress of the orphen and widow, and the male branch of the Asylum again in- terrupted, as it wag in 1845, by causes beyond the control of the trustecs. Bata of Con greas and the feelings and sympathies of the ple of this community being warmly in its ‘avor, it is devoutly to be hoped that it will be renewed with vigor, for the recollections of the past. The sympathies of thecharitable people of Washington, and more especially those of the flock of the venerated Father Mat- thews, by whom it was founded, will never consent to the annihilation or destruction of this truly christian and Catholic charity. The excellent provision already made for the care and protection of orphan girls by the Doble edifice corstructed by the trustees oF that asylum, is a sufficient guaranty of what the ean again do forthe poor orphan boys, wit! the blessing of God and the support and en- couragement of the good people of this com- munity, who have had no reason or cause to withdraw their confidence from the charitable —- having the care and control of St. izcent’s Orphan Asylum. 'y given in Washington, and wish to give pub- set 3 to my opinion concerning them. With Prof. Munder’s I was highly pleased; but with M. Cocheu’s I was far more than pleased —I was delighted. One dance in particular was admired, not only by me, but by all pres- ent of refined taste. “ I refer to the “Minuet de la Cour and Gavot de Vestrys” This dance excels anything I ever witnessed in my life, and the manner in which it was executed by a Master and Miss of M. Cocheu’s echool, baffies description. They were loudly and deservedly applauded by the very fashionable and refined company present This dance was the favorite at the polished court of Louis XVI, of France, and held its rapk supreme in all fashionable reunions as the most finished in its eful and beautifal movements, whieh can Sh eonducive to a noble and easy deportment in the dancers. I never saw it danced before, but ha eard mnany stately dames of old giving glowing de- scriptions of it. M. Cocheu has intro- duced this dance inte society, and I hope ere long to see it assume that rank it held at Louis's court, in all the fashionable soirees, 5 our country. . however, was not the only dance wor- thy of praise, The cachucha, Bohemian polka, &o., but in my haste I had omitted to mention nymphs garland dance; all were admi- rable dances, and were admirably executed The latter (nymphs garland dance) deserves more than a passing notice. It was executed by six misses, one of whom represented the roguish boy Cupid, who, with bow and ar- rows, watched for an o javity to pierce the hearts of the lovely nymphs. It was a perfect allegoric representation. and made one fancy himself in fairy lands, or living in the times of Virgil and Ovid, and that he ac- tually beheld fabled divinities of old. The prima donn: this dance executed her solos with much elegance grace, and elicited the loud and frequent bursts of ap- plause £0 justly due herself and instructor. Ere concluding, I must beg of M. Cocheu that be will give a repetition of his delightful Festival, and thus afford to many D8, whose eng ents ented them from be- ing present last T: ening, an opportu- nity to witness those delightful tableaux and of juding for themselves.
