o. EVENING STAR. Local Intelligence. Music at tas Carito. —We may safely say that thousands of persons repaired to the Cap. itol grounds, west side, yesterday afternoon, to fttend the first concert of the season by the Marine Band. The musicians were in fall drees, and arranged at acircular row of stands within one of the beautiful marble basins on tieenclosure. The treeg and the grass clothe: in “living green,” (the latter like velvet to the feet,) fowers in fall bloom emitting their Jtagrance, and the nobie national council beuse looming im the distance, the very many listeners and promenaiers of all ages and conditions, constituted a scane in the extreme beautifal and worthy of @ painter's skill. There the bachelor fondly gazed on female beauty, and the fair ones, perhaps, did not s!- together ——— the tender glanees. The little folks, in hand carriages or in the nurses’ arms, were evidently delighted with the melo- dy as well as the pleasanily exciting scenes. Care was banished for the while, and, so far as We could form an Tee pochondriacal f hi it by: al vestiges of humanity Would only repair either to the Capito! or the mt’s grounds, when citis and are attracted thither by the cheering strains of the Marine Band, they would be dispossessed of their despondency and cured of their disease. Among the company we noticed the Presi- dent of tho U: States, in company with the Hon. Harry Hibbard; Reeretary Marcy, too, was presont among the delighted a-semblage. Tas New Post Orvice Botuprxo —The three brick houses, on the Post Office qus: frorting on F s reet, were demolished in ra- markably short order one day this week The foundations were first undermined. and then down came the buildings like ‘a thou-and i briek,” or, ratber, hundreds cf thousande ofthat material This work was accomplished without the least accident to those engaged in the hasardous business. The frames are now ebaring the same fate, but a slow procese. Very soon the od. with the exception of the city Post buildings, will be cleared. There are now emplcyed. in removisg ob atructione aud in excavating. for y laborers A= I nineteen horses and carts, under the super utendence of Mr. A.W. Denham. Seven car- centers are likewise engeged on the premises. Mr. Joseph Woodfall bas been appointed cu- yerintendent of masonry, Mr. William Dough- superintendent of marble work; and Mr. ‘3 WePheresn, day watch. The business which is prelimiaary to the erection of the addition to the Post Office buildings is moving systematically and efi- ciently. Farat Accipext—Woa learn that a fatal accident occarred on tunnel No. Sof the Wash ingten acqueduct yesterday. A blast had failed, and one of the men inthe employ of the contractors wes re-loading the hole, with several others standing near, when, in the act of tamping, the blast explodsd The unfur- tunate man was instantly killed, three others severely burned er otherwise injared, one of them having his collar bone broken. One man standing in the group, close by the blast, escaped entirely uninjure:, though the frag- ments of the reek flew all around him I: is supposed that the first biast having slightly opened the rock, some fire remained in the crack and communicated with the new charge. it seems to have been one of those accidents which are unavoidable The man was a ekil- aul and experienced miner, who had spent a difetme in this occupation. opinion, there was a milien- Tax Festivat To-Nicat —!-rofeszor Mun der’s grand exbibition and May bali will, it ia scarcely necsesary to remind our numerous rezders, take place this evening at the Na- ticnal Theatre. This beautiful composition, therefore, will be performed this afterncon, about half past five o'clock, over the crave at the cemetery. The liberality of the band in offering their services to departed talent, to- ether with the appropriatenzes of the music evicsted, makes it an occasion of rare and aolemn interest.
