EVENING STAR. Local Intelligence. A Haxnsows Pantine Girt—We had the pleasure of witnessing on Tuesdsy evening. at the Library tall ofthe Columbia Fire Compa- D7, a very beautiful and interesting ceremony. Lt consisted of the presentation to that excellent and popular company. by their esteemed ben- efactress, Mrs. I). H. Pendleton, of a serie:, (four in number) of ver7 handsome er gtavings elegantiy framed, portraying exciting scenes in the«-Lifect « Fireman.”’ ‘The offering was intended as a parting gift—the generous donor being about to bid adieu to the bright and endearing scenes cf home to sojourn fora brief Season in someofthe gay and interesting cap- itals ofthe Old World. ‘The presertation was accompanied by a very beautiful and pleasing impromptu address, in the course of which the amiable speaker expressed the warm sentiments cf friendship for the company, dwelling, in eloquent terms of commendation, upon its high character. and encouraging the members in their philanthropic cause, by wordsef kindness, gentleness nnd ewee'ness. Capt. Tait accepted the beautiful present on behalf of the Company. expressing their and his most ferven: wishes that the tourof their esteemed patroness might prove to be ono cf unalloyed delight ard pleasure, and that she would soon returnto gladien the heart: and meet the cordial welcome cf thoso to whom she had ever beena guiding star, Capt. Tait closed his neat and appropriate address, by calling on Mr. FP. MeNerhany to express more folly the sentiments cf ‘he company. Mr. MeN. responded to the ell, and ia the course of bis address remarked that thouzi, in other fair and sunny climes beyond the rolling deep, their fair benefactress wouid see much to gratify the eye and please the fancy —though she would linger with delight amid the most beautital and romantic. and contewplate with emotions 0! joy some of the grandest works of Nature and of Art—yet he was sure that her thoughts would often go back, on the wings of momory, to the bright. and glerieus land she had left behind—to the sweet home of her childhood and maturer to the picturesque and happy scenes cf Capitol Hill—to the familiar and favored Hall of the Columbia! = closed —_ the expression of the hope that her pathway, while abroad, might be strewn with flowers— that bright skies might be ever above her, and true hearts always around her. Alter these interesting ceremonies tho fair donor was complimented by a splendid cere- nade. com of vocal and instrumental music, gotten up by the grateful members of the Columbia. We bad aimast forgotten to mention that Mr. Grenoup favore! the company at the Ha'l with several delightful sorgz, exicuted in ad- mirable style. Ruesry Acaprxy —The Poard of Aldermen at theirlast meoting did oct finally act on tho | bill of the lower Loard, fur the purchase of this property fer public school purposes, which measure is b: on the recommendation of the Trustees cf the Publis Schools. It was gubmitted to the Board cf Aldermen, a week before their udjsurnment, and accidentally ‘was not referred to the Committee on Schools. On being reached at their last moeting, it was ef course so referred. Mr Reed, on Monday ovening last, calied the atteatien of the Board tothe fact (provious- Jy unknown to us) that the privilege which the orporation had of purchasing the academy Was limited to the 2ith inst. A note wes also read from the Secretary of the Trus ces of Pablie Schools, requesting the President to: restate toti® Board what he had mentioned at { the meeting on the 16*h inst., namely. that ti refusal of the propsrty to the cit» was limited to the 24th, aad also that another party in be- half cf zeveral individesis, had obtained the; refusal of the property at 316.509 from the 2th to the 21 prox , and also that ithad been: stated in the daily newspapers that a commit. | i tee had been appointed to waiton Mr Morison, with proposa‘s for the purchase of the proper. ty for a Methodist Guilege. Tho Paord, how- ever, adjourned without acticz on the sul ject. We trust that the Boord of Alderuita wi legislate on this subject with due cautio The sum that will be required to pay for th property is quite larg2; and, theugh we have great respee? for the judgment of the School | ‘Trastees, we hear so many of our feilor.citi- } sens advocate the pizn of using the money tof build two or mora echool houses of modest’ dimensions and pretensions, in different parts! of the district to be supplied by the proposed archage, as to ineline us strougly to ibe opin- jon that due tion should Le exercised iz this matter. Apervat Exrzaonpinary.—Yesterlay no less than eight organ-grinders, bringing with them their instraments, arrived in this city, by the railrvad cars It was a novel sight tocce them, ono after another receiving their instruients from the baggage master, and slinging them acrosa their backs, and hurrying away in various di rections. We are unocflicially apprised that ecme twenty four miles cf the work bas been contracted for by very responsible persons, aad that the bids fall far below the es:imates of the Engineer. We presuma, however, that an ¢ficlal report of the invea'igations will be tmade to our City Councils.
