Er ee ee — 0 eee ee ————— hve NING STAR. Local Intelligence. CaARACTERISTIC——Mr. James Maher sends as tbe following characteristic and really in- teresting communication : I long since suggested to the Commissioner of Public Buildings (then Major Noland) to give me one avenue a year, graded and carbed. and one mite in leng'h, to :mprove horticul- tarally What a city would you have had, pad thie suggestion been carried out? You would now bave tweoty-one arenus:,in the beart of the o.ty, with the reservations as well as the streets, all planted and improve; yes. and your City Hall too. inside and outside of the greunds, beautifully planted ; a fountain in the centre of each reservation, and actatus of each of the Presidents facing east. All reservations, according to my plan, should have eighteen inches of s foundation in the elear, a granite coping of six inches, with a wrought iron paling te prevent dust and other filth from accumulating as at present, and also dogs and bogs from rooting up 2nd destroying the grounds. Each lamp, according to my plan, was to have been placed therein, and to be ‘wo feet higher than those in the street. I am for inclosing and improving al! the reser vations I have planted twelve already; but they are not inclossd. I hope to live to see all cf them completed. The water-works are not far off, and I hope we will live toenjoy the denefic of them. If we do not, our off«pring will. From the width of our streets, reserva- tions. and pavements, in my opinion, we will snrpass Loudon or Paris in beauty as a city. All now depends upon good generaiabip. Too fast or too slow will mut do in inolo-ing the reservations Commence right, and we wiil never be wrong. I hope you will notice that some of them very small. The pavements are wide. All —s take off seven feet for porebes or steps. If I had that space in addi- tion for all of the reservations it would add five feet on each side of them. They would then appear much larger. Tn this view some may differ from me; but it is for the benef: of all. I am going ahead with all the reservations; the Commissioner says lam right ‘“ But,” says he, “ Mater, the citizens ask too much ; the appropriations srelimited. Do the beet you can io please them What gives more general satisfaction than planting avenues with trees and improv- ing reservations? Had [I my way, it would have been done long since. There were more trees planted this spring and /ast fall than for the last ten yeais. This sprin -’s planting will speak for itself Avenues ani reserva tions have been set out with twelve hundred ornamental trees And here let me say that this is the first time that any Commsssioner of Public Buildings has backed me ia my ideas Old meu plant trees and build houses at the age of seventy or eighty, not for themselves bat foc theirchildran. I am the oldest gar deser in the United States; so —— tid me I am fifty-one years a garaener. I think it is almost time I should know some- thing aboutit. I have been forty yeara in the country. Jackson did not send for me without knowing who I was. Iam twenty one years in this city. During this time I had not one professional gardner in my emp oy- ment—all laboring men. I made them wha: they are—handy aed useful. I hope to plant twenty thousand trees, before I die, to im- prove and orvament the city cailed after the rather of his Country. What spot more de serving of ic? I hops to see the City of Wash- ington surpassing the world. I helped to mske it and I 9m willing to die forit. James Maher, the public gardener, never had a leave of absence and did not lose one day to the year by sickness for the last twenty-one years; eighteen days siok. the balance on duty I lived under the administration of eight Preai- dents andeight Commissioners Of the former, four are deal; of the latter, seven. May they rest in peace. James Mager, Public Gardener. “Have 4 Caxe?—some nice ones,” eaid an elderly woman, thrusting her basket in the faze of a boy on Pennsylvania avenue, the other day The :oungster looked into the basket with a wistful eye, and then thrust his hand into his pocket as if feeling for a cent, which might, perhaps, be there found. Disappointed fm bis search, he was in the act of turning away, the woman still insisting upon his taking acake The boy, thus importuned, accordingiy took the best locking one (if, indeed there was apy choice.) and was about taking the second bite, when the dealer checked him, saying, “ Pay me forthecake ” The juvenile, with an air of surprise, rexponded,— Didn't you beg me to take acake? “ Yes,” said the woman, “ but I didn’t give it to you for noth ing: expected you to pay forit’’ “Then take your stale cake,”” he exclaimed, at the same time flinging the gingerbread into her basket, and making use of language which did no* argue favorably in bebalf of his morals It is unnecessary to say the parties were not particularly pleased with each other’s conduct. Fause Avan“ asp a Lose Rux.—About half-paet eight e’clock, last night, the beiia sounded an alarm of fire. and the engines. as usual in such cases. were hauled out The light was in the direetion of the Military Asy jum. Thitherward the Northern Liberties company, with two piecesof apparatus, ran, taking the Seventh street route. While on the way, they were informed by several per- fons. in response to their inquiries, that a building or two were envelo with fismes. This stimulated them onward. Such infor- mation, however, could not be obtained even at the toll-gate The light still loomed, and, the Company gathering fresh strength, the appa Tatus wes drawn up the hill, but not wi'hout severe labor From that atand point, the company lo ked, net on burning houses, but on crackling and inflamed biush-wood! So they retraced their steps, regretting of course, that the false statements on the way had de ceived and unnecessarily fatigued them The run to the scene and the walk from it, covered a line of six or seven miles. Tue Races —The admirers of good trotting will be delighted with the mateh that comes off to-morrow over the Columbia Course. The horses are young, neither heing quite four re old. The bay colt, Ned Hunt, has a Feputation, having trotted his mile in public in 3:16, nearly twelve months ago, since which time be bas not been matched He bas now, however, met wih a competitor of bis own age in the Dutchman, and f:om what we can lecrn an excellent race way be expected. We understand there are a number of fine horses on the track, in active training Preparatory to the races which take place next month Buyxer Hitt —The dramatic diorama of the Bat:le of Bunker Hill will shortly be ex- hibited in this city. Severs! years ago we witnessed i: at Odd Fellows’ Hall. The scene opens presenting a star-light view of Colonel Prescott, at the head of the American army, crossing Charlestowa Neck, and concludes with a view of Bunker Ai'l and the conflagra- tion of Charlestown ‘The British act@&ily march through the priveipal streets of Boston, with adegree of accuracy truly wonderfal The machinery is wonderfully arranged and the exhibition, as heretofore, cannot fail to be interesting Taz Great Gret Coxcent To-Morrow “ist —We were in error yesterday in an- Bouncing Mr Morin as being the party who Gives the great concert to morrow night at Which the holders of tick@ts are to draw, as Priaes. the exquisitely beautiful laces now on exhibition at the weil known store of Madame nner Madame D i: seems, and not Mr boorress aun Wie offers this delightful tertai t i ble world of Washingun ©” ‘2° fashions — Woop & Curisty’s Mixstrais at the Peo- ple’s Theatre, (Iron Hall.) have already es- tablished themselves as public favorites. Clark, formerly of the firm of Clark & Briscoe. but recently a clerk for Mr Hoover, a butcher. Mr. Clark is of an old and very excellent a in this city, and was one of the most inoffensive persons we ever knew. The coroner's jury could only diccover that he was missing ‘since Saturday, but how he got into the water, whether by a0- cident or design, is unknown, (probably the former.) —- . Povice.—This morning, Roberta Knoxville. & good looking white woman who seeks her companions from among the colored popula- tion, was taken before Justice Bates, by Officer Wise, om with keeping a house of ill- fame, and, having no proof in her favor. she was held to bail for court in the sum of $200 ; she was also made to give security to keep the peace for assaulting Maria McMahon as if the preceding was not enough, she was arrested by Officer Simonds charged with leading a lewd and indecent course of life, and not be- ing able to comply with the law she was sent, by Justice Bates, to the workbouse for thirly days. , Traly ‘the way of the transgressor is ha Expep —The O’Leary case was tried this morning before Justice Morsell and Cap:ain Birch at the guard house.
