Ic gave them blooming complexions, and enabled them to endure long ascending walks on the mountains without over- taxing their lungs. A scientific journal here recently quoted the statements of M. Montigny, French consul in China, in reference to the use of arsenic by the northern Chinese. He says they mingle it with their smoking tobacco. The cus- tom is p‘culiar to certain provinces, and so common, that, according to the testi- mony of missionaries who lived a long time there, tobacco free from arsenic is not sold. The same witnesses assured the consul that the arsenic-smokers were stout fellows, with ‘lungs like a black- smith’s bellows, and rosy as cherubs.’ The publication of Montigny’s statement bas called out a letter from Dr. Londe, who informs us that seme years ego, in the course of a discussion at the Acade- my of Medicine, on the agents to be em- ployed to cure tubercular consumption, he told the assembled doctors that he had found b2t one snecessful means of combating this dreadful disease—that means was the sicking of arsenic. The Doctor reaflirms his commendation of this remedy. «+ Gcolegists here are in great delight, though almost ready to quarrel. over a wonderful bone of an ex-wonderful bird that has been found in the lower clay stratum of the Paris basin, near Men- don. According to the comparative anat- omists, this paleontologic Snanghai must have weighed someth'ng like four hun- dred pounds, and had a ‘drum-stick’ like a giraffe.” Tue Oxive.—The San Francisco Sun says that at the last meeting of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Dr. Kel- logg read a notice of the Olive Tree, as found in this country. It grows pro- fusely, in scuist, gravel and loam, at San Jose, and at the old Mission, south of that locaiity. Jt is a tree of rapid growth, attaining a height of about twenty-five feet, and a diameter of trunk of from eight to twelve inches. in addition to its rapid g:owth, fruiting the second year, and being in full bearing after the sixth year, it is a very ornamental tree, well worthy of cultivation for this pur- Fose alone. Its timber is very compact and close grained, and it doubtless would be a very good material for engraving upon. It is easily propagated from cut- tings.
