[commontcarep.} Tax Batt or rae Scorr Guarps, which took place at Carusi’s Saloon, last evening, was truly a brilliant affair. The eye was first attracted, upon entering the hall, by the beau tiful wreaths of evergreen, hu fusion around the rooia. bearing inscriptions of all the glorious victories achieved by the gal lant Seott during his long and triumphant career. At the upper end of the hall, between two national flags, was nded a portrait of the “old chieftain,’ whose heroic deeds are indellibly etamped upon every American heart, and the brilliancy of whose achiere- ments challenges the admiration of the world. A beautiful wreath, inlaid with flowers, made by some kind ladies on Capitol Hill, occupied a ous place. The ‘ stars and stripes” were looped in festoons in different places, while the beautiful banner, presented to the corps by a kind and liberal friend, gracefully waved over the entrance of the hall. The scene was, indeed, picturesque and pe- triotie. But we were roused from our reverie by the soft strains of the music, a3 it swelled upon the evening breeze, and the light foot. steps of the merry maids and gallan: beaux, skipped cheerily, merrily through the dance Throughout the whole evening, joy and mirth reigned supreme Onur military friends turned out well. more especially the juvenile compa- nies of Union Infantry and Washington Rifi-s. —_ Keyworth. Lieuts. Baden, lint, and Pedicord, of Mounted Guards; Mr. Powers, of the Infantry; Mr Maguire, of the Greye: Mr. Plant and others, of the Americcn Kiflemen, were present from the older companies of the batsllion. Much praise is due Lieut. McKean for his skili and taste in arranging the wreaths and inscriptions, and our old friend Eckhardt, at the corner of F and Ninth street, for the sup- per, which was served at 12o0’clock, and the confectionery. The ball was kept up with spirit, and nothing cceurred to mar the festiv- ities of the evening. 8. Convict Lazor.—We have received from Mr. John F.C. Ose day last week, (says the Cincinnati Commercial of the 10th,) @ wowan named Sulzer eloped from her husband’s residence in Morgan Township, Butier County, Ohio, with a young schoolmsster named Pease, who had been teacher during the winter in the the vicinity end boarding at Sulser's house. ‘The infatuated woman had lived happily with her husband for near twenty years, and was by bim the mother of seven interesting ebil- dren, She took with Ler, her younges: child. an infant, (leaving six with her husband.) and about five thousand in cash and negotiable notes. She wis the daughter of a wealthy old tarmer, who died about @ year ago. leaving a very handsome propertyto her. The notes she tock with her were given by the purchaser of a portion of the land inherited from her father, and were drawn in favor of her bur- band On the day after her flight, one of her brothers, who was sick in he: house. died, and it is presumed that the sudden and stran; disappearance of bis sister may have given t shock that proved fatal. The husband of the guilty fugitive was in the city yesterday, searching for a clue to the whereabouts of the wretched pair who have robbed him of his peace. ile is almost crased with grief, indig- pation and siamo, and is of the opinion that the flight has been in the direction of New York. It is feared that Pease had some of the notes csshed in this city, but the fact has not been ascertained This is one of the most remarkable cases of elopement of which we have heard It seems wholly unaccountable. yet “the heart is de- ceitful above ail things and desperately wick- ed.’ Athome she was in very comfortable circumstances. Her husband had jast fin- ished a commodious end elegant new houe, and the eldest of hor children was a daughter fourteen years of age. A moreii and happy family than the one now dishonored and broken, was a fortnight ago, would be hard to find.
