eV EN ING-STAR. Local Intelligence. A Grayd Deawanic Rayfeesextation at Grordetown CotuzGe.—One of the nivst jamt and agreeable amusements of the holidays in which it has been Soll ts fortune to participate was that afforded on Tuesday afternoon by the Dramatic Associa- tien of Georgetown College—an association composed of some of the students of tha: vcn- erable institation. Many ladies and gentle- —_ were — spencer the reverend ¢ and students of the college also shari po llr enjoymentsof ie cecudinn’ The large exhibition hall was crowded to its ut- most capacity, presenting a very brilliant ard beautiful scene. Among the distinguished personages present we observed Rev. C. H. Stonestreet, Father Provincial S J: ev. Bernard M. re. President of the College; Rev. Jno. P nelan, formerly of this city; Dr. Tyler, and Pruf & © plays se- lected ior performance were « Richard IL{.” and “The Golden Farmer”—such parts being omitted as might prove offensive to “ ears lite,’’ and fewinine characters being also dis- Pensed with. The characters in both pieces Were admirably sustained thro shout, and the ment actors made “ di hits,”’ elicit- © most deafening plaudits. Mr. Harney (® recent graduate,) who appeared special invitation, assumed the character +Richard, and really performed his part well, His conceptions were fine, his declama- tion excellent, and his gestures graceful. In the tent scene his acting was truly faultless. We have @ften paid a “round haif”’ for the privilege of witnessing a meaner personifica. tion of the “ Crook’d-back Tyrant.”” Mr Seott B. Smith as Richmond, Mr. A. H. Loughe berough as Buckingham, Mr. James R. Ran- dail elegy S Mr. Adolphe Huguet us Cates- by. and Mr. Chas. B. Kenney as the Duke of orfolk, were all excellent, and deserve espe- “= {eprragern n the after-piece, Mr. C. B. Kenney, as the Golden Farmer; Mr. James R. Heniall. os Old Mobb, and Mr. Jules H. Choppia, as Old Mr. Harvey, were exceedingly ; but Mr. James D. Dougherty, as Jemmy Twitcher, was inimitable, and kept the house in roars of laughter. The Orchestra was composed of the Philharmonic Society of the college, under the direction of Professor P. H. Daunas, and dispensed exquisite music. A very beautiful air called “ The Cadet Schottisch,” composed by Mr. Daunas, and dedicated to the George- town Cadets, (a fine company of College stu- dents,) was among the choice collection of music with which the audience was favored. The stage management, we should not omit to state, was under the direction of our old school-mate and friend, the Rev Charles King. who ‘ormed his part to perfection. Take it all in all, the dramatic representa- tion at Georgetown College, wag really a beau tiful, interesting, cheering, briiliant enter. tainment, highly creditable to all concerns and when the next one takes place, ‘“ may we be there to see!” ArrempteD Suicips.—Last night, a black map, named Henry Robinson, made an at- tempt upon his own life. With a razor or knife, he inflicted a di wound on his fore- head. as if to cut off a part only of his head: but the instrument was either not sharp enough, or the man had not strength to effect his purpose in that way. He then tried the edge of the steel on his throat, which yielded to the pressure, and a horrible gach was in- flicted—the blood flowing freely. He had pre- viousty threatened to kil! the members of his household, who, taking advantage of his weak- ness from logs of blood, tied his hands; and, early this morning, they sent for officer Aquiila R. Allen, who conveyed the unfortunate man to jail for proper surgical treatment, as well 2s for personal safety. The man was, doubtless, under theinfluence of strong drink He bad said, when he threat- ened his family with death, that he did not know what had so influenced him, bat, never- theless, he was compelled, by some power in- explicable to him—but which, we conceive, was the demon rum—that he must perpetrate the bloody deed. New Marxer-Hovse axp New Escive Hovuse.—The bids for building a new market. house in the First Ward and a new house for the Northern Liberties Fire Company, in the northern part of the ci:y, have been opened by the respective committees of the Councils appointed for that purpose, and the ta-k of examining the details or specimens of the roposals submitted to sub-committees, in or- ler to report on the best plans, having in view the stability and convenience of the proposed structures as well as the pecuniary features of the transaction. We learn that eight plans and estimates have been submitted for the market house, and as many for the engine- house, all by different persons, There waa ap- ropriated for the first named the sum of Fro 000, and for the latter $5,000. The bids generally reach those amounts, and perhaps several of them exceed that cum. Several days must necessarily elapse before the result is made known Taz Bavu or tae Scorr Gvanps, it should be remembered, takes place this evening, at Carasi’s Saloon. They who have seen this juvenile corps on parade have been much pleased with the tary evolutions, and, ‘ally, soldier-like bearing of its members it they want new arms, and, therefore, resort to the expedient of giving a ball to aid them in procuring muskets of the proper weight for their not yet fully-develo strength. The ing gentiemen o ncerned in getting upthe t have strained every nerve to make it agree- able, and their exertioas will, doubtless, be crowned with complete success. There will surely be a large number of the most beauti- fal and fascinating young ladies in Washing- ton in attendance, and many gallant repre- sentatives of all our volunteer companies. It will not do for any one who enjoys such enter- tainments to fail to be there. Taz Broruers Giantz.—It will be recol- lected that, several months ago, two brothers (Germans) were arrested in this city for an assault on Mr. Edward Duvall, living near Bladensburg, on which occasion, the younger & boy, shot that gentleman, on whose prem: they had encroached, during their gunning Operations. They were, on Tuesday and Wed nesday, tried at Marlboro’, Maryland, on the charge—the boy for attempting to take Mr. Davall’s life, and his brother for being acces- sory the crime. The former was arraigned before a jury, and the latter submitted hic °° the court. They were both acquitted, itbeing very clear that they acted wholly in self-defence. Agrest axp Disuissat.—The boy whom it was said set fre to Mr. Wood’s stable on Tues. day was arrested officer Boss and watck- man Eckloff; but the ladies and the gentle- man living in the house where the boy was employed were willing to swear that he had not been out of the house for some time pre- vious to the fire, which contradicted the state- meat of the youth who said he saw him apply the match to é#he stable. This would prove an alibi, so the officer released the boy from ous- tody. The gentleman remarked, however. that he would in no way shield the accused if any thing should occur to implicate the servant in the crime. Roxsine with tae Macninss —Recently we have noticed minors ruzning near the ap- paratus while on its way through the street, while a few men were pulling at the ropes Youngsters, doubtless would be glad of an opportunity to help their seniors, but the law is against in this respect, and subjects them to the payment of a fine. They, how- ever, seem to be well pleased with the exzite- ment attending either a true or a false alarm, and exhibit ag much promptness and impa- tience in reaching blazing scenes as the moet ardent patriot does when he rushes, in time of invasion, to his country’s standard. Buiocx ror tae Moscment.—There has bees received at the Washington Monument grounds a block of granite from American cit- izens in Chins. It bears an insori; , Which cannot be read by the natives of this country, although it is presumed to be appropriate. The words are in the Chinese character Finemen’s Batt.— The members of the Western Hose Company, No. 1, contemplate giviog a bali on the night of the 2oth of this month, at the Washington Assembly Kooms. There is no doubt bat that it will equa! any that has preceded it this season ipa a a et tunity could be adduced than in which their us is ever h: A sod the success which they have met with. The National was filled last night with o oe _ te walls never echoed ore t and 1 ter than the witicismd of: our minstrel! friends ercated. They play at Alexandria this evening retarn- ing to our city and giving two fareeell r- formances on Monday and Tuesds; at Odd Fellows’ Hall, when they will Selanly depart for the South. AncunisHor Hueuns arrived in Georgetown ag eh having been brio iting ad se lor the express purpose of bapti: ‘00, of our sister city, 8 pupil of the Catholie con- vont, which service took place this morn: in the presence of her parents and family an afew friends. It is said the ceremony was performed in the most interesting and impres- sive manner; all the decorations, 40., made use of on the occasion being of a gorgeous de- scription, the music wy and the dis- course of the Archbishop highly appropriate The Archbishop was the guest of Mr, Poe. Having rmed the ceremony, and paid so cial but hurried visits to his friends in the two cities, he hes returned to his labors at home. Tax Psore’s Taeatee —Mies Wyette and Mr. Taylor attract audiences by their artistic impereona'ions, and are ably sup- ported by p pee bog A Weaver, Mrs. Atwood, and Miss Tyson e latter young lady is destined, with study and application, to attain a position in the front rank of our native artiste—a pretty and expressive face, a beautifully modula voice ‘ul car- riage, and the physical 8 of success, which needs but the ring breath of ambi- tion to achieve To night, Pizzaro will be presented, Miss Wyetie sustaining the charac- ter of Elvira, and Mr. Taylor that of Rolla. The entertainment concludes with the funny farce of the Omnibus. Musicau.—The musical depot of Hilbus & Hits, in the Star Buildings, is the resort of many of our ablest musicians, and frequent! a free concert is given there On Monday af. ternoon, quite a company assembled to hear the performances of Ahrend, the violincellist of the Kunkel Troupe, assisted by M’lle De Boye. The auditors present were sll amateurs and professors, and were delighted at theren- doring of Mendelssohn, the performance of the selection from “Lucia,’’ &c. On esterday, a number of listeners were delighted by the per- formance of a number of selections from “Sonnambula,”’ ‘Belisario,” &3., by Prof. Scheel and Mr. Abrend. Those social moet- ings at Hilbus & Hits’s show that our city is becoming the residence of some able musical amsteurs and professors, Wiurarn’s Horey.—We notice that the Messrs. Willard are making extensive prepa- rations to accommodate their already large and increasing patronage from the traveling pub- lic. Only a few months ago they made exten- sive alterations and additiong to their present building; but dd it is not large enough; and this week they have commenced the demolish- ing of a part of the old Mansion House with the view of building in its place a wing, to be attached to their establishment, which they hope to have ready for occupancy by next winter. These alterations are certainly indi- cations that they are doing a good business, especially at this season of the year. Concert at THE Navy-Yarp —The Wash- ington Glee Club, assisted by several well- known amateurs, announce a concert at Odd- Fellows’ Hail, Navy Yard, on Friday night, for the bexefit ot the Baptist church of that section, (Rev. Dr Ccle’s) The object itse!f will doubtiess enlist the sympathies of our friends in that quarter, apart from tbe high character of the music selected, and the favor with which this club has heretofore been re- ceived. Tae OrpHans —The proprietors cf Stan- ley’s beautiful and universally admired pano- rama of the Western Wilds, generously in tends to apply the proseeds of to-night’s exhibition, at Odd Fellows’ Hall, for the ben- efit of St. Vincent's pase Asylum; and to-morrow night the avails are to be given to the Protestant Orphan Asylum. As to the —, five hundred tickets have already been so! There will be an afternoon’s exhibition both to-day and to morrow, commencing at half- past three o'clock. A Suasn.—Yesterday afternoon, a number ot horses attached to buggy wagons, standing in Louisiana avenue near Seventh street, bo- came frightened by the wind. One of them, belonging to Officer Cox, ran off ata fearful rate, taking a short curve toward Pennsylva- nia avenue, bringing the buggy violently against alamp post. Here the vehicle be- came detached, and the horse ran in the diree- tion of the itol, the wind whistling him on in his escapade. The damage sustained was to the buggy, a shaft of which was snapped. It is at all times dangerous te allow horses to stand in the streets unsecured. Ox a Drive —Last night, a marine, who had become exhilerated by frequent imbib- ing of alcoholic stimulants, aud wishing to vary his performance of “ground and lofty tumbling,’ determined to take a ride. Ac- cordingly, he took charge of a hack, the driver of which was absent, and began to enjoy his fun. fle was finally arrested and taken to the guard-house. This morning, after paying for the use of the coach, and receiving a kind and appropriate lecture, he was discharged. Waren! Warer!—There are many com- laints from various sections of the Seventh ard about the scarcity of water, as many of the Lp 7 are dry. The officers who have charge of the interes's of the residents of the ward should pay prompt attention to this mat- ter. A plentiful supply of good water isa great blessing. Easter Party.—On Monday evening fa splendid easter party was given by Mirs Ho: gan to her pupils. It was one of the most brilliant of the season, for youth lent the grace of tudding charms and childhood inno- cent freshnees he rooms were handsomely decorated; and the festivities, including daneing, were continued until midnight. Warer Conor Pictunes.—Moessrs Taylor & Maury, at the suggestion of many of our citizens, will raffle the water-color pictures, new on exhibition at their store, in sixty chances, at $5 per chance—there being eleven prizes.
