Local Intelligence. “GAILY Pass Ti uRS.’’—True, the sea- roa for hotel fashionable “ hops’ is over, bat, as heretofore, the pleasures of the dance are ind in many a private circle And thus it will ever be—as long as there is a foot to shake and suitable music can be are to ie the « of motion’ Let the dig Mified few, if they — the stately minuet, the many, “ the million,’’-will resort to such figures and measures participation ig which banishes al! suspicion of rheumat- isn, and proclaims “the spirit of the age’ — the “go ahead,” or, r: 7, g0-afcot, active aciple, becoming the ‘ sovereigns’’ of this 2 lard. - We have heardof the fashionable « hope,”’ and of their magnificence. Spacious balls, fice bands of music, handreds ges jets, and, cortainiy not least, graceful fomalo forms, clothed in faehion’s richest gear, and faces edditionally beautified by the gayety and ex- ——_ the hour. — who have attended such entertainments, while appreciating the busy and brilliant pelea ena very good word to say concerning the refreshments, served both in the form of liquids and of solids. But there are other “ hops,’’ conventionally so called; we should prefer to designate them “ shufiies."” Several nights ago, a large party of women and men resol en having ‘‘a dance.” Aanong their tenements, there was not one large enough for that purpose, and so they repaired to a vacant carpenter s sLop, in the rearof Temperance Hall. In a very short time, the building was lighted with tallow- dips, and, to the sound of a fiddle, the party at once on in their unrestrained amuse- ment. e shuffling of feet, and the ing of the loose floor, acted as a kind of heavy base to the screeching horse-hair and the feline entrails, while an occasional hearty outburst of a fell into tho orchestral movements as di tly and appropriately as the octave fiate amid the clatter of brass, and the gram. biing of trombones, and the dreadful beating of uneffending but groaning sheepskins. For hours, the merry-makers continued their di- versions, stopping, now and then, however, to drink s ing from a tin-cap, repeatedly replenished from sundry birck bottles, the contents of which may have been milk or water for aught we knew to the contrary! We bave no doubt those poor creatures en- jssed themselves equally as well as those, in- cluding Queen Victoria, who danced at Wind- tor Castle to the music of Jullien’s P:ima Donna Valse, performed by a monster band. Means of enjament are suited to the cir- cumstances of all classes, and though it would not be considered fashionable to dance in a carpenter's shop, not a few of the children of our respected first parents may consider them- selves to be weil favored if they have no other indiseretion than this for which to atone. Caprrot Extension.—Messrs. Provost and Winter, the contractors forthe marble work, have ia their employ one hundred and eighteen stone-dressers, seventy reven carvers, ard ninety-five laborers. Lhe aggregate number waa much larger, but there has beon a 2 sion of hands on account of the non arrival of aavfficiency of the rough material tokeep them all at work. The carving in marble is both elegant and beautiful ; aod this is seon more especially in the door jams, whish are fourteen fect in length, riealy consoled, bearing representa- tions of cora with the husks and grapes with the leaves. ‘the marble casing of both of the wings of the Capitol extends tothe second s’ory, in- clusive, with the exception here and there, of agap, which will shortly be filied with the smooth and hendsome white material. We noticed, yesterday, that workmen wera ® the colurans and pilasters, with richly eapitals, in the vestibule of each wing, fronting east, and which are to support the stair case In addition to the workers in marbie, there are employed eight cr ten brieklayers, a force now sufficient to keep pace with the set:ing of the marble; sixty laborers and thirty-firecar- penters, and about a similar number of black- smiths, ia their respective shops in the vicinity. The numberof persons employed on and about the Capitol extension is large enough to constitute a good sized villoge. All of their movements are conducted in remarkably good order ; every one understanding his business, and faithfully performing it. Contractors, superintendents, and over-lookers are men of character, ability. and system: ; heuce matters are properly and beneficially conducted. Dar Goops.—The spring stock of dry goods which Colley & Soars are now placing on their elves, are at least equsi (o anything of sert ever brought to Washington. e have seen many stocks of similar goods, and as far south as Washington we never beheid anything superior to them for variety, good taste = elegance. Shoppers should by no means fail to pay them a visit, if but to gratify their curiosity to learn how astonishingly the various improvements in the manufacture of dry goods are enabling those of the trade whose motto is “ Quick Sales and Small Pro- fice,”’ to lesson the prices of almost every arti ele of personal and household wear. Sexpay Scmwoot Exarsition —The little folks of Ryland Chapel, Seventh Ward, gave an entertainmenton Wednesday night, con sisting of recitati: dialogues and singing. The children of the Sabbath School were priv- ileged toselect their own parts and pieces. As an evidence of the extent to which they availed themselves of the permission, it may be etated that the performance extended through two full hours. But very few persons rorth of the canal knew that the exhibition was to take jace, else there would have been more “ley- * taken as admission fees at the doors. Ping Vextsot.—Weesaw yesterday being unloaded before the dvor of the fine es:ablish ment of the brothers Shecke!l, opposite the centre market, a large quantity of ine venison, to be chipped and broiled for summor use, such as we never before saw in this market at this season of the year. Upon some of the hams the fat lay an inch tnick. We presume it came from the Maryland glades, whence the Messrs, Sheckell obtained most of the fine venison sold by them in the course of the ae winter. The lot they are now getting in a sight, whieh, to an epicare, is well worth sse- ing. Mustcat —The Union Choir Association bave issued a circular to the various musical societies and amateurs throughout the Union in lation to the eontem usical Conven- tion to be held in thiscity, commencing on the 8th of May next, to continue four successive days and evonings, and to close with a public ° The commitise of arrangements eon e of arran; consists of Messrs. T. L. Potter, F. A. Tucker, T. J. Ma- ler, Thomas MeGill, George Sheriff, and ’. Glenroy. They say that the success which has invariably attended such conventions, when properly conducted, whether held in cy, town, or vill convinces them that it will make an abiding impression on our com — in favor of the cause and claims of sacred music, and will not less abundantly reward all who therein ici pate. The Union Choir of this city is now com- Pcsed of some eighteen choirs, attached to va rious churches of Washington, and numbering upward of three hundred members. The object contemplated by them is one of importance, and no doubt will attract large numbers of musicians from the different States of the Union. The association has been in existence about a year, and the projected move- ment speaks well for the persevering en‘er- —— which their affairs have been con- jue! — Misa kayxy Morayt.—This young lady’s Meg Bierrilles last evening, was excreting! weil received by a crowded and discrimi. nating houss. We do not remember ever to have seen its representation more ap- plauded in this city, where it has been played by Charlotte Cushman and several other very distinguished actresses. In the other leadin, parts of the piece she was well sustained, though bere and there an actor was imperfect in the text, and words were introd in the play wholiy foreign to it, which is in bad taste. ‘o-night In; is to be performed, & piece which suits Miss Morant’s powers cap itally. We are not sure that they cleared much by their visit to Washington. We only know that some of the employes are grumblin, very much that their wages have not been paid. ‘Tue Hacks.—The officars of the fifth dis- trict police have been looking up the hackmen who leave their hack: standing in the streot. Th violation of the city laws, and the enforcemont causes much ill-feeling between the officers and the hackmen. Wire Warrrixa —Yesterday Patrick Con- ner was sent to jail by Justice Bates, in de fault of security for his appearance at the Criminal Court to anawer the charge of whip- ping his wife. Itis becoming quite common for the “baser sort’? to indulge in such di- versions. There wore three or four such cases last week. Tae Poisoxrsg Case.—In the care of Phar- nella Skinker and Delia Hazel, charged with poisoning Cassa Williams and her family, the jury have not yet agreed upon a verdict. They jad, up to the hour of our going to press, becn confined in a room, in the City Hall, for twen- ty six hours. Weppixe Paktizs.—While at the railrosd depot yesterday afternoon, we saw two happy couples, who, in the course of the day, had been united in the bonds of matrimony. They took passage for the North, wedding tours being quite fashionable, now-a-days. [communtcateD Mr. Eptror:—Can you or any of your readers inform me of the origin ot playing tricks on the Istcf April? Query. ow in a Porter House. The Eighth Ward Police were informed, about 10 o'clock on Tuesday night, of a dis- turbance then going on at the Porter-house, No. 338 Mudson street, known as the “ Wea- ver’s Arms,” and two officers repaired to the place and fourd a man named John Scott lying deed upon the floor, and three men utiag in another rocm. These were all arrested and taken to the station house, where als» the body of the eased was brought. It was thought at the time that Seott had been killed in tho fight, bus yester- day Coroner O'D-nnell held an inquest upon the body, when a different state of circum- stances was revealed. It appeared io evi- dence that he came to the place intoxicated, and continued to drink freely; that he and one Daniel Dewer commenced skrlarking and continued for some timo, without exhibiting any angry feeling towards each other. Some bhourg afterward, they recumed their play, when the deceased became angry. John Connor, an acqusintance, then interfered, and sexied him in a chair, after which he became more excited, and called to bis son, who was in a back room, to come to his aid. The son came, and struck Connor in the face, anda regular fight ensued in the back room, and while it wis going on, the deceased, who was pee gh in the front room, fell from hia chair, and died of apopiexy, It was in evidence, further, that deceased was of very iatemperate babits, and that no violence had been in- fiicted upon him. This i 3,000 less than arrived during the last year. The commissioners anticipate quite a decrease in the segregate emigration for the present year. They estimate that the German emigration for the year will amount to about 175,000, and th» Irish not far from 60,000, The number of emigrants that arrived during 1854 exceeded that of any former year by 34,278.—V, Y. One conviet named Connor was smothered to death, and one escaped. The loss is estimated at $100,000.
