The Jatelligencer, commenting on declara- tiens of the Detroit Free Press that there ix an abiding vitality in the Democratic party, sayz: “It isa happy temperament that finds con- tola‘ion acd hope in the darkest hour. We certainly are disposed to agree with the A: in scmorespests. A party must indeed pos sess some degree of ‘vitality’ to survive the hard knocks which the Democratic organiza tion bas reesived within the last twelve months. Du. ing the last two gesz ot Congtess, we repeatedly warned the members that their in- attention to, and failer> to 2ppreciate the real necessities of the new Sate fur goveromental esre and liberality, would be Likely to result ia the generation of just’such movements as the ene to which we bere refer. California sprang, fell grown, into the fam- ily of States, with greater abzoluie require- inents for the proper transaction of the Gen. eral Government's business within her bound- aricé, than exiet anywhere out of the great State of New York Yet Corgress has, for the most part, persisted in ignoring these so importan: tacts in legie!s tag fur her, appro- priating money to be expended there as though poder the belief that they were giving it away § Dews for the form zation in tha’ absolutely. Sensible people in the new State all realize that they have been shamefully neglected by the National Legislature, and the Pacifico side demagogues are aiming to maks something for themselves by playing upon that sentiment as {t exiete in the popular mind of Californias. This is the key to the new movement, which threatens to convulse the State to the centre, if not to end, in their separation from the Atlantic side States. The alarm manifested already by the conductors of all the papers of standing in that quarter, satisfies us that there is much more danger in the movement then is at present generally be. lieved on this side of the Rocky Mountains. > Worthless —Annuaily, for many years past. the publishers of the New York Trisune have pat forth a party pampblet, under the soubri- quet of an Almanac—* The Whig Almanac.”’ From its titleone might jadge that what it embraces in the way of statistical facts arc accurate; that is, of its fixed facts—thoge which continue the same from yearto year. This, however, is not so. We opened this Almanac for 1855, first at the 16th page, wherein we fiad a collection of errors sufficient to discredit the work in tuto. Thus, Darid R. Atchingon, of Mo., is therein written down the V. P. of the United States, pro tem. Now, Jesse D. Bright waa elected to that position early in December last, one month before this Almznac purperta to have been issued. As it may, however, we allege that it waz necessary to print the work more than a month in advance of .ho new year, and that this great mistake thus crept into it, we pags that over. Bute similar exovse cannot be alleged for the mis. takes concerning the compensation of the chief officers of the government, which we find on that same 16th page, wherein the salaries of the Vice Presiieat and the heads of the departments aio alleg:d to be—cf the first mentioned, $5,000 per annum, and of the others $6000 per annum, while the Attorney General is set down at $4,000 per aanuul. Thiz is wholly incorrect. Tho pay of the Vice President is $3 000 per anaum, while tha: of the beads of all the departments, including the Attorney General, is also $8,000 por annua. These rates of compensation were accorded by Congress two years 2go, the compensation ct the Attorney General not having been as low a3 $4.000 per annem for many years past Having found these co gross errors in the first pase of the Aimanze for 1855, on whieh ovr eyes were cast, it strikes usthat itis bardly worth while to look turthe: into it. The rew Public Duildings.—We under. stand that ihe officers of the Government, who are by law charged with the caustruction cf tae various buiidings ordered by Congress, recently, t> be erected in Washington, are striving with might and main to get ready to commence operations upon them. Se womay Soon expect ground to be broken upon all o: them. The appropriations made for the sea soa’s work upon them are atnple to aff rd em Ployment for a large number of mechanics and Iuborere, in addision to those now in Washiag- ton. We come to this conclusion from the fuc that wo hear of no want of work at ih’s time among any who foliowcallings connected with the cun.tructioa of buildings, public or pri vate. The ogscegate of the appropziatious oi Congress, at the last session, for improvements in and arovad Wasbicgton city, including the Water-works, turns ou: to bo very nearly, it not quite, two millions of doilars—a larger sum than we recollect t> have been ever be- fore so approprizied ia @ single seszica to te so expended ai this point. & New Examiacr of Lruzs, &2—Dr Wm.
