Musicat Coxvextios—Usion Caoir Asso- ciation.—The regular monthly rehearsal of the Union Choir Association was held last evening in the Tenth street Baptist Church, the Conductor, Mr. F. A. Tucker, presiding Several choruses werc well sung, and the meet- ing, thoxgh not so well attended as usual, was a very pleasant cue. The Conductor an- Bounced that the pian for the holding of a musicel convention in this city had been com- pleted, and that circulars were in course of preparation, setting forth fully the design and objects to be attaired. Ilo convention will probably number several hundred delegates, and the association wil! duly provide for their entertainment during their etay in the city. The convention will assembie on Tuesday, the Sth of May next, wiil hold three sessions a day, and adjourn on the succeeding Fiilay, to close with a grand concert, ia which all evneerned will participate. Tho anniversary of the Choir Association takes place on Mon- day, the 7th of May, when they give aconcert, thus serving as an opening of the convention. Tiekets for admission to tho lectures and dis- cussion in the convention, and to the evening congerts will be prepared, costing probably one or two dollars for tha course, or twenty- five cents the singie ticket. Thus it will be seen that a new ora is beginning to dawn upon our musical community, which, it is hoped, will ere long, from this metropolitan center, cagt its rays over the entire Unica. Professor { B. Woodbury, of New York, will preside over the convention and deliver the lectures. We sincerely Lope the commit- tee of ments will secue the Smithao- Bian [astitution, as it is the only place in our city that will accommodate the vast number thas undoubtedly wish to atrend. We regret, in connection with this, to announce a rumor in circula‘ion, this morning. that the indefatigable and ex- cellent Superintendent, Thomas C. Edi- tors: Ihave attended many of the lectures which have been delivered, from time to time. at the Smithsonian Institute; but I hesitate not to say that I have never heard one which, for-vigor of thought, graphic description, pu- rity of arene justness of Sapna hed graceful uence, was superier to le- livered by Mr. Oliver H. Baldwin this even- ing. I+ was, indeed, an intellectual feast, and I can only it that one of those 1 au- dionces, which frequently attend there, ws not in the leeture-room. Can he not be in- duced to repeat this lecture? The subject is one which is very interesting, and it has been treated in a mannor woll calculated to take the “mote’’ out of the popular eve of the North and South. The subject was the North- era and Southern character, the popular idea of which was contrasted with the real. The i i end, to the , while the sterling qualities cf both were pointed out and delineated with grzphie eloquence. ii. February 26, 1859. Bastarpy Case. — Yesterday, = colored man named Wm. Jones was arrested on the oath of Mary Graudison, charging him with bastardy. ‘Lhe parties have lived together for a number of years and have a family of seve- ral children. Jones deserted Mary, and she had him arrested on the above charge for the youngest child. Jones being unable to give the required security was sent to jail by us- tice Clark. Mary's kind feelings would not allow him to remain long io prison, and this morning she has been ‘ooking for security that he may be released. Tae Manxet.—This morning, we had rather a slim attendance of farmers at our principal market, caused, we have no doubt, by the piercing cold of yesterday and last night. Of course, there was a general rise in the price of articles offered for sale, and in consequence purchases were small. We learn from one of our hotel managers that he was obliged to pay sixty two cents per dozen for eggs by the quantity, for usejn the kitshen; and we know a gentleman who was rejoicing that he had the good fortune to purchase a few at fifty cents. PuitmarMonic Soctety’s Concent —We re- uind our readers that this concert will take place at Carusi’s Saloon, on Tuesday evenia, next, the 6th proximo. Let all attend, an we assure them of a rich musical treat, such as is soldom offered. Mrs. Franklin will sing some of her choicest selections; and a new candidate for public favor—Mre. Burns, from New York—will also Jend her assistance in giving a plezsing varioty to the entortainment. Gotv Pexs —Messrs. ' Wade's Cylindrical Valve Lubricator ~ Here is an invention of considerable meri*, and which no establishment, wherever an en gine is employed, should be without. It com- bines three most important properties: a gav- ing of oil, ia preventing any loss by leakage, the certaiaty of its reaching the desired places, and ons, not the least important when appifed to the engine of a locomotive, averting all dargor. To railroad companies it is invalua ble aa it enables the engineer to supply the etoam cylinders with oil without leaviog his stand, either while the engine is running or standing, and that without any danger of the cil being blown out by the steam. This ig effected by means of a rod attached to the crank of said cylinder, gud which extends to the engineer's stand, thus plaging the opera tion of the lubricator entirely under his con trol. Inthe machine room there are three of them a tached to the ines in use there, and on asking the parties in charge of ther, were fleased with them, they spoke ighest praise of their utility anJ profit. We have one attached to the engioe in our establishment, and find it to work to a charm. Guoneztows, Feb. 27, 1855 Up to about two o’cleck yesterday our elec- tion moved on very orderly and quiet. After that hour, however, the interpal fires of seme of the hangers on about the polls began to ex- hibit itself in something like volcanic erup- tions; and from that time until after the re- sult was announced, (about three o’clock this morning,) our streets resounded with shouts, hegzas, the loud bellows of a baby-waker, which had been provided for the occasion, and @ few fights of small import, 4:. We are happy to say, however, that nothing of a ss- tious character occurred. One man, by the name of Offutt, was slightly cut with a kuife acrors the abdomen : but the injary is trifling. While the election was going on yesterday, the roof of a house gn High street, occupied by Mr. Huddleston, took fire from the burnin, chimney of the adjoining house, which would doubtless have resulted ina serious conflagra- tion had it not been for the timely efforts of the bystanders. The damage, however, was bees trifling. he Sabbath School Fair for the benefit of the Briantown mission, will be opened again this evening. and continue during the remain der of the week.
