Mr Bayly opposed this motion, on the ground that the nomination in question had been forced on the Mayor by outside pressure, so that it could not be called his own. Mr. Evans urged that Mr. Larner was, in fact, the Mayor's own clerk. He knew noth- i leged harrassment of the Mayor to procure the appointm He doubted the fact and explained that it wes the fashion for the removing officer always to deny his re sponsibility for the act, and regretced that the Mayor bad not sufficient independence to shoulder the responsibility of bis official act. Columbia Hall, Cfpitol Hill, presented a de- lightful scene last night, the occasion being the firet ball of the terpsichore Club, a newly fo: med associ of the young men, pziaoi- ally of “tbe will,”’ for festive purposes The entertainment opened at 9 p w, Mrs P—n, the so well kuown lady patroneas of the Coluscbis Fire Company, (of whoee members the Club iz principally formed ) being present. Really we never saw a more intePesting com pany of young ladies They wers priucipully drawn from among the daughters of our wor- thy mechanios of Capitol Hill and the Navy Yard, and were admirable specimens of the fascination of budding and just blooming womanbood in thie immediate region of coun try. The young ladies of that walk in lif: bere and througbout Maryland and Virginia, are, to our taste the finest looking women to be seen any where ‘he glow of bealth sits enthroned on their cowatenances and fine fig- ures, and their invariable habits of industry surround them with that natural dignity cf carriage, which results from the substantial independence of theirstation in life Though the hall was crowded, there was not a blas:e lady preseut—one who 6 appoarance indicate: premature gatiety with the dissipationgs of fashionable s ciety, the 80 common foyadation of the too eurly decay of the ladies of cities the world over. The tall and graceful form of Miss C—n was ecospicyous ip the crowd, while Misses L P—e, 8. B—y, E. B—y, D---], A—n, McK-—- G—h, M. C—n, E. P—n, E C—d, M. R—s, M. McK—y, E. W—d, E C—s, f G—d, N—n, and many other lovely young girls were surrounded throughout the evening by a host of admirers. Among the beaux present we ¢ residents of other similar social clubs of ashington, vis: Wm Caho, of the Ewpire; John T. Heard of the George Washington; E. D. Harrison, of the Eagle ; C. Wiilson, of the Good Intent; H 8S. Denuison, of the Star; Thomas Sinon, of the Mount Vernon ; i. bic- Cormick, of the Good Will; J A. Butler, of the Nightingale; W. A Keardon, of the Lib erty, and J. Evans of the Americus—nearly all of these weil known elubs being represent ed by other members Mr. J. bk. Havener was the caterer for the occasion, and acquitted himeelf as baudsomely as usual, while Scott’s band discoursed the music. Mr Ruf, from the rame committee, asked to be disebarged from the further considera- tion of the petition of Kichard Briscoe and others ; diccharged. Mr. J. W. Davis, from the committee on im- — reported the Bcard of Aldermen to set curbstones on squares S73 and 904, with a slight amendment, rectifying « clerical error, and the bil! as amended Mr.” Davis also reporied a bil paying J. T. Walker $156 for grading B street, between Tenth and Eleventh streets; passed. Mr. Plant reported the Beard of Aldermen bill to grade Fourteenth street, from I to Boun- street; passed. . Plant also reported the Board of Alder- men bill to supply a deficiency in the grading and graveling & street; passed. M = Duncanson, Coste bis committee = claims, reported that the papers connect with the petition of F. Hutchins were imper- feet, and asked to be diseb from the con- sideration of the same; which was done, and permission granted Mr. Hutchins to withdraw Shem and perfect them. Lutiarep.—Last night, two of the Indian delegation now in this city, having taken in an over supply of fre water, e 0 weak- ened by carrying the heavy frei fell in the streets and rolled a! shout , and singing, probab‘y their “death song until they were picked up by some kind per- sons who carried them to the got house, where they were retained till this morning, when they were dismissed, When they got outside the door, they stood still for § momant looking at each other, then byrst jnto a laugh, and started for their lodgings. Promotion.—Mr James A. King, formerly orderly ser, tof the President's Mounted Guard, pry appointed by Col. Hickey quartermaster sergeant of the regiment. enjoy the animated scene with peculiar satis- H Caveur at Last —For some time past, a number of celored rowdies from Georgetown have been in the habit of coming to this city and breaking into the dwellings of colored persons, beating the inmates, and creating dis- order; and when the officers e after them, taey would retreat into SAB sree believing that when they passed Rock Creek, they were safe from Washington officers. Warrants were issued on the 15’h instant against a large num- ber, and some were arrested Last night, a posse of our officers went into Georgetown to @ ball at a tan-yard, where they arrested others, and brought them to the city. This morning. two of the leading scamps, John Butler and Dumfrie Jordon, were brought be- fore Captain Birch for trial Seven charges were made against them for riot, and the evi dence was so positive that the captain sent them both to jail for trial at the Criminal Court This is a warning to others of that class. — Maticiovs Miscarer.—It has been the cus- tom at the gas house in the Seventh Ward to throw the coke made there on the adjoining let, to be gathered by the poor. U these occasions there is a perfect scramble for the largest and best pieces. Yesterday a number had gathered there, mostly children, when a load was thrown out, and they were told to “ dig in.’’ While they were scratching among the coke and ashes, some heartless fellow threw a bucket of hot gas tar upon them, in- juring their clothing. and it is feared burning the eyes uf a child so badly that he may lose his sight. Warrants have been issued for the leaders in the affair, and they will be pun- ished as they deserve, if not by the law at least by the gas company. Tue Meraropouiran Mecuanics’ Farr last night was crowded to suffecation. Never was @ place of amusement so popular as this Fair, and the gentlemanly managers do all in their power to sccommodate the immense number of visitors. Music —instrumental for the Promenaders, and some fine giees, wi:h organ accompaniment by Prof. Scheel, for the inter vals—serves to heighten the enjoyment and Pleage the tastes of all who attend. Prof Fertsch, also, by bis superior performances on the vario' anos, afforded much gratifica- tion, and gave additional variety to the eater- taioments of the evening. A Race.—Last night, a man named John Lapine, insulted some ladies on the street, when a boy spoke to him about his unmgnly behavior. ‘This made Lapine angry, and he knocked the little fellow down, Lapine was arrested by officer Burr and committed to jail by Justice Goddard When the hack was at the door, Lapine asked if they were going to give bim a hack ride? Being answered in the effirmative, Lupine said he would give them a race for it, and started. He ran same distance, when he was caught, tied, thrown in the hack, and taken to the prison. Moxey Fouxp at ty Fain —A pocket bock full of money was found at the exhibition last night by a gentleman attached to the Co st Survey office. who forthwith sought dil- igently and found the owner. A smaller sum was also found by an officer of the exhibition, who entered upon a similar pursuit, with what succesa we have not learned Warcu Returns —The frosty air of last night drove six unfortunates to the guard- muse tor lodgings. There were but two cases for trial this morning—Jobn Butler and Dum- frie Jordan, colored, riot; sent to jail for court by Captain Birch 4rtigls at the Metropolitan Mechanics’ Tastitute. It isour intention, under this heading, from unpleasing pageant In addition, there were | 44Y to day, as space will permit, to give a | description of the many usefal, ingenoous and from Mr Clark, whe bad been removed to ! i fancy costume, though beaming wita youth, | excellent articles on exhibition. Steinway & Sons, 88 Walker strest, N. i Y , have two deposited there. One is a large circular scale piaco forte, of Louis XI. ‘style. We heard this played upon, and the ! power and sweetness of tone, the de! igacy of ‘touch, was truly remarkable It ia a 7t oc. \tave ‘Thoother is not so powerful, but bas all the sweetness of a agyure one. These in- struments are constructed upon a new prisci- ple, having four bridges instead of two; and the upper half cf the piano having three strings to each uote instead of two. They have two double iron braces, which makes them very durubte aud desirable. The exte- rior is really handsome, being carved afi over, Presenting a most rich appearance. Barril Machinery —In the machine room Hutchinson & Co., of Auburn, N Y > exbibit one of the greatest labor saving mascaines of the day—tbeir steve aud barrol machinery, which has attracted so wuch attention through. out the country, and having received ths highest premium wherover exhibited. The machine consis's of several pieces—the stave cutter, with which 2,000 stavescan be cut in ove hour, day after day; the stave or, giv- ing the required bilge avd bevel, and ointing both edges at once; ths crozer, used in con nection with the jointer, cutting thecroze aud chime with grea: accuracy; the head cutter prepuive the timber for the heads; and the ead turoer, turning the head and fi bing it The value of this machine is incalculable, ax by it the demand fur barrels can on'y be sup- plied, doing ts work, too, in a manner far superior to any thing of the kind now in exist. ence [tis worthy the attention of all inter- estes io this growjoy branch of industry Daguerr otyp+s.—Vhere are several well- know. astist’s work in this line to be seen in the Fair, but we bave only room tu day to pare ticularize one. We commence with Mr. V .n- nergon who islocated on Pennsylvania avenue, neur the corner of 44 street [le has on de- pesit jo the upper room a splendid collec:ion of pictures His new Crayon Daguerreotypes are equal to anything we bave ever een. ‘The Photograph Daguerreo: ypes taken by him on paper, colored in vil, a:e truly works of art He bas alarge picture buoy up in the Tom, taken in thie latter style of the veterans of 1812, who lately paid a visit to the tomb of Washington, which is justly admired by all. We would commend a visit to his gallery to the loyerg of the beautifyl. The Self-Adjusting D-sk —There is exhib- ited in this article conciderable skill and in genuity, which reflects much credit on the clever inventor, Mr. Wm G. Wolf, of Phila- delphia [+ advantages consist in its being appligable te three purposes, combining as it ues & ry, desk, and sideboard. By werely touching a spring it opens and adjusts itself to @ graduating scale for the purposes of writing. There are no doors to obstruct the pasinge- way underneath, which runs back in a pede: al way and leaves the entire space eleur fur the feet, When you desire to close it you nerely tguch it slightly, whe. it runs ona railway motion back, goncegls the dusk, leaying to view the library anuside-board’ it is udapied for the parlor, bank, and countiog-house, and cannot fail to come into general use.
