EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Swinpuise Exrraorpixany.—Under this head the Warrenton Flag of Saturday last, says: “An individual calling himself Martin de Marix, Brevet Major—came to Warrenton on Menday last and put up at the Warren Green Hotel. He t a letter of introduction to one of the ministers of our town from a minis. pe in Washi rl City. This gave him coun- ance, w! om: t other. wise have denied ~~? oe poke and treated as a gentleman until the following ap- peared in the Weshington Star.” - Here follows the account given in the Star under the caption “An Imposter” on Thurz- — The Flag continues : “The description given above corresponded in every respect so completely with the Major Marix, that 2 was immediately arou- aed. A committee of citizen waited upon him and informed him of the suspicion: against him. He could not satisfy the gentle- men upon any point, but said he would satisfy them when he could hear from Wash- ington city. He desired to know the conse- quences of his failing to produce the evidence, when the exercise called “riding on a rail’’ was explained to him, he then enquired whether it would burt much—and was in- formed that it depended much upon the shar- ness of the ‘ rail.” A new pair of beots which we very much ex pect belonged to Mr. Anderson, of Washing- ton city, was found on him. He then demanded an a with whom to consult. He failed to convince his attorney of bis character, but said that if he left here in the morning he should claim the right to return and prove his identity. We have ne doubt that the Cheva'ier de Masi of the Washington Star, and Major M. de Marix, are very nearly, if not entirely, one and the same individual. His appearance is that of a slightly cross- eyed spectacld ——, about 5 feet 11 inches high, pged between 25 and 30 years. Had with bim epauletts, military sash, spurs, and says he if an officer in the French Army who has been to the Crimea—and that he was com pelled to leave Europe because of his compli- cation in a duel. P. 8. Since the above was in print, the un- fortunate individual above mentioned has at- tempted either to eommit suicide or to further impose upon the community by feigning to have poisoned himseif. ‘the physicians have been unable to discover any substance of a Poisonous nature, in the emissions from his stomach. He wrote a letter to Mr. Beckham stating that gambling had been the cause of his offence mentioned in the Star, and direct- ing the sale of his watch to pay his hotel bill. He is now reviving and the physicians con- sider him in no danger Whether he did at- tempt poison or not, we do not undertake to say, the physicians do not believe that he has poisoned himself, though they will continue to watch bis case.”’ Our compositor made Marix, ag written by us, read Maai. Looking for seats to the right and left over the well-filled house, they had proceeded to the middle of the eburch, when the stranger in advance, sceing @ pew which contained but two Occupant, a —— and Isdy, stopped before its dcor as asking for admission. The gentleman im- mediately arose, and with a kind and digni- fied gesture invited the strangers in Then, for the first time, did the Stranger recognise in the ccoupant of the pew the honored Chief Magistrate of the nation. Evidently taken by ——— and fearing lest it might be regarded an intrusion, he retreated step or two, and waived bis companions— two distinguished gen- tlemen from the Seuth—into the President's slip, and himself occupied a seat which was yolitely offered to him in an adjoining one. The grace and urbanity of the President were admirable, but admirable as they were, they sink into insignificance when viewed in connection with the simplicity and true repub- lican feeling which shone even it so trivial an act, and whi2h magnify au oflice second in dig- nity, importance, and po to pone on the eaith. True dignity is simple, and needs neither hollow ceremony nor the supercilious Srown to make itscif felt and reay ected Monday, Feb.19, 1859. Civis Tax Ixvisince Coat —Westated, last week, that » singular exchange of coats had been Made atthe fair. On Saturday we were in- formed that the person baving seen the notice im the Star bad returned it to the doorkeeper, and bad requested him { speak to us to make the correstion, as he said it wae done by mis- take. Our courte:y is provertial, and we can- Bot but comply with his sclicitation, but we must do it in eee own Ea. The two coats Were very rimilar in color and yualit , one being black and nearly new, and the ahae a gray that had <ecn its best days. Now, when we remember the brilliant lighte which shine im the hall, an optical delusion w id be very likely to occur and the coats mist cae for the other, especially as they were much alike incolor We trast the explanation will be satisfactor; to the gentleman ; bat if not Wo canoot atsiet bim forthe; Owner WanveD —Une of the Uuards picked up & hair braceies, with gold « a«p and locket, on the avenue last Bight, wick the owner cap have by calling on Captain Birch A Saniovs Arrarr.—This morning an affair ocourred on Twelfth street near the bridge that is likely te result in the death of one :f the les, The difficulty o: ted in the familiarity of a child about years old ith in the house. The man’s 0 was Daniel Gould, and the obild, it is said, al him in the face, when he grew angry threatened to whip the child. Mr. Heary Webster, who was present, interfered, and some words passed between him and Gould. This morning some angry words pas:ei again between them, and Webster orderel Gould from the house and he refused to go. A fight ensued, and during the fight, Gould stabbed Webster in the abdomen, inflicting a wound from which his entrails gushed. Gould at- tempted to escape, but was arrested by officers Panning and Wonara. It is thought the wound will prove fatal to Webster, and Gould was sent to jail by Justice Clark to await the result of the wound and a further hearing. Sce advertisement in another column. Tue Errzct or CaReLessNess.—Last week, we noticed an accident that occurred at Haven- ner’s bakery, by which a little boy was se- verely lacerated by thecutting machine. The day after that occurred, another boy was hurt by foolishly running his rs in the pu! leys that regulate the machine. He placed’ his fingers on the wheels, and fo'lowed them with his hand while turning. But, finally, one of his fingers was caught in the machine, and the end of it cut off. If there be any ordinance in existence to put a stop there to, we trust our authoritics wil at once en- force it. : Uncte Tom as mx 18.—This piece, now being enacted at the National Theatre, is ad- wirable. Churches — Celebration Arrangements—In- cevdiarism— Presentation. ALEXANDRIA, February 18, 1855. The pleasant weather and bright sunshine has drawn crowds to our churches to-day. Little is stirring worthy of record. The meeting convened at Carson’s restau- rant to secure an appropriate celebration of the coming 22d, was presided over by the Mayor. Resolutions requesting the Mechani- oal Artillery to fire a salute, inviting Edgar Snowden, Esq., to deliver the oration, and Fendall Marburgh, Esq , to read the Farewell Address, were adopted ; the clergy, military, firemen, &c., were request@@ to participate, and cowmitiees appointed to carry out the ctpeaie of the meeting. uring the progress of the conflagration on Thuraday night, a daring attempt was made to fire the engine house of the Iydraulian Fire Company A box about six inches by twelve, filled with lampwick and other com- bustibles saturated with camphene, was placed beneath the inside steps and set on fire.
