For terms ply at the Star in rE +e -___ SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS The Union replies to the communication in yesterday morning’s Intelligencer, alleging that that journal and the Nebraska Democrats of the Legislature are, for the most part, re- Sponsible for the defeat of General Shields, According to the Union, the publication in question involves an attack on Senator Dou. glas and his friends on the part of the friend of General Shields. The editor warmly de- nies that his course towards General S. has been other than that of a sincere friend. We apprebend that this deniel is hardly neces- eary, inesmuch as though the Union perhaps made a mistake in failing to urge the Gener al’s re-election at the right time, it is well known to all in Washington that he had no more sincere advocaie: than those in the Union office. The Jatedligencer in Dotising the mistake with reference to the veto, madein the Star yesterday, again takes occasion to make an “organ’’ of the Star We beg leave to say to our respected neighbor, that the term is offen- sive when applied to us by the Intelligencer, ynasiouch as its conductors know well that the only organship frfrly attributable to the St +r results from our perseverance, industry and Srester exp crieuce in catering to obtain Wash ington news for the Star’s readers. We have no ‘dentification whatever, with the adminis- tration, seeking only to give theuf the benefit of the premulgation of the truth in what we publish concerning public affairs. We should pursus the same course with any administra- tion placed in power by the people. We find in the Latelligencer the following note from Gen. Our Foot in it!—In the absence yesterday of the senier editor of the Star, (who makes up its Washington news columas,) a friend just before we went to pross, brought to the office what he erroneously believed to be pos- itive intelligence that a veto of the spoliation bill had been transmitted to Congress. The Oregonian contains an account of s horrible murder having been committed by a man named Burris, a foreigner. His family consisted of his wife and four children, whom he brutally murdered, and then set fire to the house, consuming their bodies. That paper gives the following particulars : “ Burris has lived for several years in North Tuality Plains, has been very intemperate, and lately has been eonsidered partially in- sane. When drinking he haa been coi red a dangerous pergon, and some of the neigh- bors had remained at his house on several oc- casions, even up to the night of the murder. Iowa Ssxator.—It is pretty generally con- ceded by the papers of Lowa, and by the lead- ing men of both parties, including Governor Grimes and Chief Justice Wright, that the election of Mr. Harlan as Senator from that State is utterly void. The Dubuque aoe informs us that Senator Badger, the ablest Whig jurists in the United States, has | pee a written opinion t the election was legal and of no binding force. Many other members of Congress of both jes, unit this opinion.
