Bennett, Dickinson, Polk, Bacon, Lord. M: , Hanson, and At Lee. The minutes of the last meeting were read districts and the teachers Schools No.1, second district, and No. 1 and No, 2, fourth district. A communica'ion was received from Augus- tus Eason, asking for a “permanent situation fo the second distriet;’’ ao, one fiom Mrs. 8. M. Kennedy, enclcsing a “testimonial” from Messrs. W. H. Campbell ard L. Coyle, de- siring employment as a toacher—all of which were referred to the commitice of examina- tion of teachers. Mr. Bennett presented Mr. Harvoy’s vill for fuel; which was referred to the sub-board of the seeond district wag referred to ot. of a previous meeting of the board, the esc-etary submitted & report on the condition of tlic school houses now owned or rented by tho corporation; which ws adopted by the board; and, on motion of Mr. At Lee, ordered to be sent to the Mayor. with a request that it be commu- nieated to the Board of Aldermen and Com- mon Council. Mr. Havson moved inasmuch as the trus tees are responsible for the proper use of the city property entrusted to their care, that the | houses, owned or occupied by the cor- poration, be used for no other than public schoo! parposes; which resolution was unani- mousiy adopted. Mr. Bennett called the attention of the board to the condition of the school roum at the corner of Eleventh and H streets, it being tn (he damp basement of a church, below the surface cf the ground, badiy lighted and ven- tilated, much too small for the accommodation of 140 pupils ard two teachers, with no play- except @ small space about twelve feet wde, bounded ou one side by the church, and on (e other by an o and {filthy sewer, which, 1” tbe opinion of physicians, has been 8 fruitful ¢.\use of sickness among pupils and teachers. it having been found impoasible to obtain a suitable school room {n the first district, it was resolved, on motion of Mr. Bennett, that the sub-board be authorised to occupy a room temporarily in the second district. r Hangon moved that a comnciitee be ap. Pointed to actin concert with the secretary of the board, and with the joint committee of the City Councils before the district commit- tees of the two houses of ress, and recom- mended the adoption of such measures as will carry out the recommendation of the Secre- tary of the Interior, that the proceeds of the public lots within the city of Washington be applied exclusively by the corporate authori- ties to the promotion of public education within the city. The Chair appointed Messrs. Hanson, at- Lee, Polk, Dickinson and Magruder. The secretary was directed, on motion of Mr. Bacon, to cause to be printed, if it should be found necessary, supply of blank forms of admission for the use of the trustees. On motion of Mr. AtLee, the seoret was instructed to notify *he teachers officially that no text books butsuch as are authorised by the board shal! be used in the public schools. Mr. Polk moved that a committee of one from each district be appointed, to report at the next meeting, what turther appropriation ia necessary to enable the trustees to supply the public schools with necessary Sevahare and apparetas. Messrs. Polk, Lord, Hanson, and Pearson, were appointed the commitiee. Gu motien of Mr. Eennett, the committee on examiratioa of teachers were requested to appoint s dey previous to the next meeting for the examination of applicants for situations in the public schools. Ou motion of Mr. At Lee, the secretary was requested to prepare a history of the public school systew in this city since its establish. ment in 1805 Tbe sccretary was Sr apa, on motion of Mr. At Lee, to codify the various provisions and laws of the corporation respecting public sebouls On motion of Mr. Bacon, the seoretary was requested to procure from the Mayor a oo; iy of the laws of the corporation for each fee members of the Beard. On motion of Mr. At Lee, he was also di- recied to make arrangements with tho Saper- intendent of the Fair of the Metropolitan Me- ebavics’ Institute, for the admission to the exhibition, at a reduced price, of the pupils of the public schools. Mr. At Lee moved that the Board now pro- ceed to its permanent organization, Mr. Polk being in the chair. Mr. Davis moved that the gentiemen thon acting as the officers of the Loard, vis: Messrs a’oik, Bacon, and Abbot, be respectively ap ypointed chairman, treasurer, and secretary of the Board. Guonexrown, Feb. 10, 1855, Both branches of our City Councils were in session last night, aud passed the following bills and resolutions : Mr. Orme presefited a memorial from a lit- erary szgociation of young mon, asking the free uze of the Council ohamber and gas; re- ferred to the President with instructions to re- spond favorably. Mr. Cropley presented a memorial from cit- isens of Water street, asking for a pump on said street; referred to committee on pumps. Mr. Orme, from committee on claims, re- ported @ bill making an appropriation in fa- vor of Columbus Thomas; both boards, Mr. Cropley, from the special committee on the petition of Hugh Hughes, reported favor- ably upon the character of the work done upon the causeway, and offered a bill, which passed the lower board, directing the commissioners to pay Mr. 4. the amount of his claim, ro- serving $500 to carry out some minor portions of the contract Mr. Orme offered g resolution in favor of Jobn Cameron; which both boards The Board of Aldermen passed a bill in favor of BE. Hughes for printing. Jn the Common Council, it was referred to the com- mittee on claims. Mr. English, from the committee of ways and means, to whom was refered the report of the clerk upou the fivances of the corporation, asked te be discharged from the further con- sideration of the subject, and that it be re- ferred to the Mayor.
