EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Jus @aaxD Baut anv Surrgr at WiLaRp’s just NiesT —Toe so commendable rivalry between the great hotels of Washing- ton is inuring amazingly to the advan’ of and fashionable apn 4 of the Federal It was but the other day that we ied the history of the magnificent affair at the National ; we are pow called on to no. tice the splendid affair which came off at Wil- jard’s Inst evening. We never witnessed a pore fasbionable or brilliant assembly, ror ssw as wany beautiful women, d with rich, elegant taste. The lovely women of our own city were not only represented on this cecasion; but other cities aleo had charming representatives, among whom we noticed H. of New York. and her niece and Mrs. C., Mise H. of Philadelphia, Miss P. of Brooklyn, Miss W. of N.H.. and the two Misses M. of Georgetown. The daughters of several members of Co: were also there, »nd appeared to vie with each other in loveliness; among whom we noted Miss A. of N.C , Misa F. of Va , and Miss J. of Penn ; Miss S , danghter of a late member from New York, was also much admired. Among the prominent gentlemen we no- ticed Gen. Scott. Senators Shields, Dodge, Dongles. snd Sebastian; Attorney General Cushing, Hon. Messrs Banks, onston, Keitt, Brooks, Wheeler and Gen Bayly. There were at least a dozen gentlemen at- tached to foreign legations present. Fleet’s cotillion band, which canrot be ex- celled, discoursed sweet music on the occasion. Mr. John Miller, of this city, furnished the confectionery. The supper tables, which were get out in the ladies’ ordinary, were decorated in the most beautiful manner by immense urns and pyramids of rare flowers and fancy confections, and loaded with all the delicacies of the season. The following is the bill of fare: Oysters. &e.—Stewed oysters, fried oystors, broiled oysters, stewed terrapin. Cold Ornamental Dishes—Boned turkey, in form of je'ly; fresh round of beet, Russian style; ornamented boar’s head, with jelly; beef « tongue, in form; Yorkshire pie; ham, wih jelly; chicken salad; butch salad; small birds, ebarteuses, Parisian style; vol-au-vont of squads, financiere style; aspic of oysters, in form; salmi of partridges, with jelly; Mayo- Baise of fowls; boned chicken; cals Rates in ¢; boned tame ducks. ‘old Roast—Turkeya, pheasants, partridges, chickens, prairie hens, wild turkeys. Ornamental Pyramids—Temple of Liberty; fruit pyramid; pine apple ice. in form; French kisses, in pyramid; orange ice, in form; Tasp- berry ice, in form; lemon ice cream, in form. Dessert—Chantilie baskets; grape baskets; pyramid of cake; nugur baskets; charlotte russe baskete; chrystalized candy; nugar harps; Roman punch; champagne jelly; blanc mange, flavored with almond; chariotte russe; sponge , ornamented; queen biscuit; Parisian cakes; almond kirses; fruit jelly, flavored with rum; Russian jolly; lady fingers; Madeira jel. ly; Bavarian cresm; faney cakes; almond lies coffee. The large diving-room, which was used as the ball-room, containing, at one time, some twelve or fifteen hundred ladies and gentlenen engaged in dancing. or grouped in conversation, while the music swelicd in harmony, and the bright gas illuminated the scene, brightening up the lovely faces and rich dresses of the la- dies, and -bowing, in the moat favorable light, the beautifully freseved hall, was a scene such as is but rarely looked upon. Having dined in this room at 4% o'clock in the afterneon, we were surprised, when enter- ing it at night, to see the immense floor cov- ered by handsomely painted figures, in fast colors, which, upon inquiry, we learned had all been done in the short space of two hours, by Mr. Lamb, of thie city. Atleast fifteen hundred persons attended during the evening We shal! cloze our hasty sketch of this brilliant fete in language simi- lar to that used by Byron in describing a simi- lar ecene : ©The long carousal shook the itumined hail; Well sp d the banquet and the ball: And the gay dance of bounding beauty’s train Linked grace and barmony in Rappiest chain. Blest were the manly hearts and gentle hands That mingled theirs in well according banis, It was a sight the careful brow to smooth And make age smile, and dream iteelf a youth, And youth forgot such hours were past on earth, So sprang the exulting bovom to that mith.” Batt or raz Wasutxerow Ligur Invayrer. Truly there is something enchanting in a mil- itary ball; the ladies on those occasions never omit to put on their best looks and plesssnt smiles. Already many of them have taken place, but one of the best ball of the season has ist tocome off. We need only mention that the ight Infantry have announced their ball fer the 14th inst to support this assertion. It is the oldest company in the city. are eomposed of some of our best citizens; and with the experience they have had in entertainments of this character, the public may rely that no efforts will be spared b: them to inure the gratification of all their guests. Concer? sy tae Westey Caaprt Cxoir.— Our readers will percsive by bur adver‘ising columns, that the choir attached to Wesley Chapel present a fine programme for Tuesday evening next. Some of the best talent of Bal- timore and Waebinzton will participate, and, urder the direction of Mr. Joseph H Daniel, cannot but be highly successful. We predict an overflowing house, and recommend our Teaders to procure their tickets immediately. A Peeiratetic Musician —We were highly Pleased, aa well as many ethers, last evening, at Browns Hotel, in listening to the sweet music prod: ced from a new instrument, called the “concertina,” played by aGerman. His performance thereon was truly surprising He would play the mest difficult pieces of music from any opera, with the same ease aud cor- rectness as the most simple ballad. He is evidently a skillful musician The concertina is played Similar to the accordeon, but sur- Passes in melody aud harmony thatinstrumert. ES It is most Ae setae J uested that the managers of the ashington hlanders ball, and ns, will forward to the Seere- tary (Wm. Forsyth, Secretary Washington Highlanders. In consequence of the severe inclemency of the weather, timely re- lief is much needed, end pri donatioos Will be thankfully received and acknowledged for the above object. Riot —Thie morning, a case was tried at the guard bouse. which will send the parties implicated to answer at the bar of the crimi court. Wm. Kerr, Henry Kaight, James Travers, and Ed. Stevens, paid a visit to the house of Miss Mary Aun Hall, where they behaved badly and they were Tequested to leave. They bad not been gone a great while, when a stone was thrown through the front Window, smashing the shutter. sash. and glass circumstances were against the accused, and Capt. Birch ordered them to give bail in $286 to appear at court. Livery Party.—Last night, several ladies and gentlemen went upon the avenue td take @ sleigh ride. Finding all the sleighs en- giged, they torned serrowfully towards home. a their way, they saw a. sl igh belonging to &B acquaintance, standing at a tavern door owner having gone in to *‘ take a smil 2 pa levies upon it and went off at 2:40 to their own sport. {he owner, finding bis Pike tee: tsslpte to the bar to smile ies avd their fri i ta the aches tir friends took a trip. Sturpy Beccsme —At the x - Present time our city is troubled by many strong able bodied men, who walk from door te dvoor, and from hotel to hotel, begging from persona who have Rot the ability to Jabor that the beggars have. ‘here certainty is work enough at the city farm to employ them all; and we hope the Police will red the city of the nuisance. The ceremony was very mmely Performed by Turner Dixon, Esq. Tae Mrape Picrures.—By’ to our advertising columns, it be seen that the most valuable works, formerly in the gal- lery of the late Richard W. Meade, are to be offered for sale. They are— St. Thomas of Villanueva Giving Almsto the Poor, a copy of Murillo, by one of his apils, and Fomor by tbat great master; to be ual to the original, now in — Sa rin ginal, Seville, (Spatn). Meade, rh ta the invasion of the French into Spain, while he was acting as navy agent for this country in Cadiz, thei owners being forced to bring them under the American flag to prevent their destruction. It is well known that Mr. Loe epee the means and knowledge which enabled him to take advantage of the many opportunities of acquiring such objects of luxury and taste. Every painting is sincerely believed to bo as stated. The St. Thomas, one of the most bear. tiful of Mr. Meade s former celebrated gallery, representing charity to the young and the old, the lame and the blind, has been comparea with the original, and no difference could be be found. Purser Bridge, now in this city, has seen the original, and says that this picture is as perfect. For this picture we bear that $2,000 is asked. The Adoration isa Murillo, aud so beautifully grouped that no one can doubt its authenticity. For this $1,500 is azked. For the Correggios $1,000 each is asked—that is, if sold separetely. They are put into a raffle, however, valued at $5,000— 200 tickets at $25 each, and four prizes Such an opportunity of obtaining some among the mo-t celebrated and valuable pic- tarea which are on this side of the Atlantic never before occurred, and reeults only from the fact that the respected member of the Meade family who owns them, is literally com- pelled by her neceszities {» part with them The St Thomas is nc at Taylor and Maury’s book store, where ‘vill also be found a subscription paper for t! ropesed rafile, as well as in the rotunc. of the Capitol ‘There is large and ve.y oelebrated St. Mathew in the collection which is understood to be under a mortgage for $2000, to a com- pany of gentlemen in Baltimore, though we ear that if the collection be sold to any one individual, tia can be included at the price above indicated as its value. We are very loth, indeed, to have such cele- brated and valuable gems of art go out of Was.iogton, and therefore rejoiced a day er two since oa hearing that the collection had been purchased by a lady of the Federal me- tropolis, well known for her wealth, good taste, ard liberality as a patron of the arts. We learn, however, that this is a mistake—the collection remaining up to this time uasold. We gan only say, as they must be disposed of, that such an opportunity of obtaining such chef-d @uvres by raffle was probably never be- fore presented in our couniry. Mr. S. A Matlack bas been appointed agent for Mrs. Meade, and will wait upon our eiti- zens to golicit names for the rafile. If that notice is correct why cannot the Professor favor us who are otherwise unable to uear him, with a public concert, in which only compositions of the great masters would be introduced? Guoreetown, Feb. 8;.1855. Post Office—Lecturs by Ben Perly Poore, Esqy.—Cold Weather—Burglaries —Mr. Mounts and Blackford—Dull Times, ec. Our surprise can better be imagined than expressed, upon learning yesterday that only about one fourth of the 412 neat and hand- somely arranged letter boxes in ou post of- fice had been rented. Indeed, we could not have believed it, had wo received our inform- tion from any other source than the one we did. Why this is the case we cannot say. Surely it cannot result from a want of public spirit upon the part of our businers men and others. It must be the resalt of thoughtless- ness. Let it however, result from whatever source it may, we have no hesitation in ray- ing that it savors pretty strong of the ridicu lous, and for the credit of Georgetown, our busivess new, and others of extengive corres- ndence, who hxve not already, should come ‘orward, rent the remainder of the boxes, and thus in a small degree remunerate our old and faithtul public servant, (for we venture to as- sert that no postmaster in the land has striven harder to please the public than has Mr. Til- ly,) for his outlay in furnishing us with ac- commodations we never had before. We in tend this bint msinly for those of our leading men and mercantile houses that have hitberto stood aloof. The Georgetown Advocate of this morning, contains an invitation, signed by some fifteen of our leading citizens, of ail religious denomi- nations, to Ben Perly Poore, Eagq , to deliver a lecture for the benefit of the destitute poor of our city. To which Mr. Poore responds in a very modest, and handsome wanner, designat- ing next Monday evening as the time, Forrest Hall as the place, and bis European travels asthe subject of the lecture ‘The subject of the lecture isone that can t trove otherwise than interesting im an eminent degree at the present time. This is the lec- tyre, it will be remembered, to whieh we al- luded on Tuezday last. . . We have a continuation of winter in good earnest. The ice upon our river and canal is some six inches thick, and still freezing fast. Snow has been falling at intervals ever since tuesday night.
