= ae VENING STAR. <== LOCAL Texrerayce Convention Last Nigat.— Rev. E. P. Phelps called the convention to order, and Mr. Israel opened services with pra: after which the Secretary read the mine es The President then wished to be excused from serving on the committee to represent the interests of the convention before the District Committee in Congress. as he had not the time to attend to it Mr. A. T. Harrington then obtained the floor, and asked the President if he was a Son of Temperance? [Answer, «‘No”"] Well, sir, I wish to know why the Catholic clergy Were not invited to join in this convention ? Why the Protestant clergy alone were invited? Since George Savago, the main pillar of tem- perance in the District, was whip away from the door of Temperance Hall, temper- ance had gone down with—— Mr J. A. Wise here interrupted the speaker, when the Chairman called both to order, we stating that there was nothing before the meet ing; but, on motion, Mr. Harrington was al- lowed to speak fifteen minutes, and proceeded as follows: Yes, sir, temperance has gove down in the District. Since the Catholies have been ignc- miniously ficgged from the meeting, a new state of things has taken place; cur beloved city has been given up to lasciviousness, and _ drunkenness bas reigned predominant. Sir the reason I say this is, that I love justice: I am not a Cath: I was bern and raisei a Methodist. The reavon of this great change is that a secret society has sprung up in our mid-t, devastating our fair land, turning brother against brother, father against son, and busband against a wife; and this is what has killed temperance in our land. Mr. Wise then claimed the floor, and, cn motion, was allowed ten minutes. He said: omething of more importance than the mere question of temperance is not only agi- tating the District, but the country; and. so far from separating relatives, it will bring them eloser together, and prevent intervention between them by meddlescme Catholics. The statement that Catholics have been flogged away from the door of the Di visiens is untrue. ‘Those of them who attempted eavesdropping on the meetings of American citizens were de- servedly kicked out. But no Catholics have been driven from the Divisious of the Sons of ‘Temperance. All, at one time, gave nolice that their «prritual advesers had told them that this was a secret association, to whieh no true Catholic should belong. and that they had withdrawn in a body on that account. If Mr. H is a Protestant his speech don't show it; and I believe, if he is not a Catholic now he will soon be found in their ranks. Mr Harrington wished to reply, but wus called to order by the president; when— Col. Robertson, with bis little. brisling, bald head shiniog, and beaded with the per- yr S spiration engendered by bis stern resolve to ~ battle on the side of * Truck,” bis speech be- fore him on numberless sheets of forlscap. arese, and after an appropriate heming and hawing, turned up hi cule, rvised himself on tip-toe, and expatiated as follows : Mr. President, this movoment has caused my heart to swell within me. By our action - in this areembled congress we shall induce our National Congress to adopi measures sub- versive of the drunkenners now rampant in our midet. and will give our names to the great American ration, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, as friends of truth aad justice Sir. I have turned from = arduous labors that I might give my voice in favor of this phitanthropic movement; and te prove my disinterested sincerity, 1 have seen severzl] members of Congress om the subject, and have obtained their sanction of the subject we have in consideration. Yes, sir, even more, I have seen one member who has drawn up a bill embedying all the prov s of the Maine jaw, which he is about to introduce in erder w further our glorious project. Sir, be sub mitted it to my inspection, (here he com- menced tumbling among bis voluminous Mss ) and I will give—— Kev D. E. Reese here moved that as thera was bo reasonable expectation of doing any- thirg toward accomplishing the object of the convention, that the meeting adjourn sine der. ‘The Colonel again tried to get the floor; but the President decided the motion to adjourn net debateable But. after a motion to recon sider, Mr. Harrington gained the floor, end sai Sir, L agree with our reverend friend, that nothing can be accomplished in this conven- tion here was once a time when noxe but temperance men could become Sons of Tem- perance; but now they wish to do things up taster, and have turned out those who arethe main pillars of the order, and in their siead bave taken in rum sellers. >ow , and every one who applies for admi: tance. Col. Robertson now was allowed to continue his address. Sir. I don’t app ove of this idea of adjourn- r resolutions Congress will have nothivg to work on. [Here he was reminded that appic- Priate resotutions had been passed at the last meeting | I Enow that, air; but the resolu- tious I wart passed are of a different charac- ter [Laughter] Why, sir, if adjourn uow, after all the advertising we have done to call this meeting tegether, it will be called a perfect firzle-out. |(Great laughter. | ‘The president called him to orde: with a show of offended dignity he tuo sest ‘Ihe question wae now culled fur, and the meeting adjourned. Temperance Hall deserves the name, we think. To prevent the audience trom becom- ing beated by discussion, a large hole in the wall is left open to cool them off; and for fear of upholding the liquor traffic they put nuth- ing but water in the gas metres, und conse quently im cold weather their lights are rather dim Tue Bart Laat Nigur, at the Assembly Rooms, given by the Ilighlanders for the ben- efit of the poor of Washington, was more crowded than any other similar entertainment we ever attended here The staff was repre- sented by Colonel Riley, Majors Keyworth, Bacon, C. 8. Wallach, and ethers, and all the volunteer companies of the city and some from a distance were numerously and most &yree- ably iepreseuted, indeed. The array of ladies —many of them young, beautijul, and fusci- puting, created a furor on the part of the young wen, who attended and wasall that could have been desired. The supper, too, furnished by Narden and C Celumbus, two renowned caterers on such cccasions, was 2 capital cre. They danced 2s merry folks rarely dance. un- tiia m Nothing disturbed the harmon or the pleasure of the occasion. The High- landers, the hosts of the evening, were in fine feather indeed striving with entire sucgets to make rybody happy. We shouid judge that this so commendable e: prise of that company of volunteers, has netted for the re- lief of the suffering poor of Washington per- and, his X bapa $1,000--a acceptable offering on the altar of true Christias charity in such weather - as the present. Mapaue Rosa DeVairs Coxcent —Our citizens have rarely had such a treat afforded them as was presented last evening at Carusi’s Saloon, which was evidenced in their appre- ciation of the different performers by repeated applavse. Mademe DeVries superb and mel low voice fell upon the ear with delight, and thrilled each beart with rapture. Ifcr execu tion of the different pieces which she fang on this occasion, stamped her as one of the great- est living vocalists. The other performers uc quitted themselves very creditat!y, and the entire concert gave uvmi-takable satisfaction to @ numerous and fashionable audience. CompLimantany to Munpger.—The sub- soribers to the Songeeeetary ball to Prof H. W. Mucder, on Wednesday next, February 14th, are uested to procure thi i before the night of the ball bad of any of the managers, and at the piano, music, and stationery store of John F. Ellis, where the subscription list may beseen. Those who fail to subscribe in time, will have to send their names to the committee, on the night of the ball, at the saloon. * = Yupex are crowns of persons nigbtly at Hal] to witness the performances of Hel- page “Second Sight Seer ;” therefore it is advisabie that those who would witness his mystical and wonderful feais, should go early 40 secure a good seat. ing thus. Why, sir. if we don’t pass sowe! ae a = aan A Mazsreo on rae Piano Forrs.—It is Cg mate known that Mr. Robt. Fret, who fs now gris nightly exhibitions of Magic at Iron is one of the finest and most accomplished pianists and musicians in thiscountry His extreme modesty does not allow bim to even broach anything concerning his great musical talent and skill ; but having received an intimation from a friend who heard him in Boston at the coneerts of the Germanians, we could not resist the tempta- tion to try, by all possible means, to hear one so highly spoken of by one known to bea coriect musical critic. On Saturday last, after considerable persuasion, Mr. Helier was in duced to seat himself at a piano in the store of Hilbus & Hits, where, for an hour, he cap tivated all who happened to be present. We have never beard Mendelssoha’s Songs with- out Words rendered so beautifully, the Valsez and Mazurkas of Chapin so correct, or the Airs Russes of De Meyer so masterly. We coincide with Mr Storrs Willis, of the Musidal World and Times, that Mr. H. is one of the best renderers of classic music ever heard. A Pusuisnixea House in Wasaixcron ~It affurds us pleasure to inform the musical pul- lic of this city that Messrs Hilbus & Hits, Star Buildings, have commenced | ements music. ‘Their enterprise in establishing a branch of business, by which the now latent musical talent of this city will be given a stimulus, is certainly commendable, Among their first issues, we have before us the Tuner’s Polka, cempesed by Prof. J. Esputa, which is embellished with a beautiful and correct like- ness of Mr. Jacob Hiibus, the veteran tuner of the District. We have heard this composition, and can unhesitatingly pronounce it one of the beet of ita class ever published, reflecting credit upon the musical talent in our midst. The Ivy Waltz, composed by A. F, Little, and dedicated to Miss M J. Tabler, also just issued by Messrs. Hilbus & Hitz. is an easy and pleas- ing composition suitable fer beginners. As Interesting Case.— Two of our county constables, a few days since had a ease against a grocer who had sold his s‘ore to two other persons. They went to the store and levied upon tLe gorda One of the firm re- sisted them, and they, to get poesessiou, went to a magistrate and got out a United Sa’ warrant for the resistance. After they had arrested the resisting party, they took possess. ion of the goods. The firm are about to re- plevin, and declare that they intend to sue for trespass and damages. It ia ought they will be sustained by the law. rights of our citizens should and will be waintained. Merroronitan Mecuanics’ Fair. — The arrangements have been completed for the opening of the exhibition to-morrow evening, at the Smithsonian. A procession will be formed in the main hall, and proceed to the lecture room, where the assemblage will be called to order by the President. Prayer will then be offered up, and an address by Joseph II. Bradley, E.q. The meeting will be most interesting and profitable. Narrow Escape —Yesterday, a public waiter, named Francis Madison, called upon a Indy to see about a party, and while con- verging with her. near a fire-place, her clothio took fire, and she was in a moment envelop: inflame. Madison seized her, and managed to extinguish the flame without serious dam- age to the lady, and but slightly burning his own bande Diswissep.—The young man, Benjamin Simmons, who was arrested as an accessory to the robbery of Todd’s stors hid an examina- tion last evening before Captain Birch, and proved his entire innosence of the char, of course he was immediately discharged from custody. - Larex Cotiection.—A large collection was taken up in the Union Bethel Church (A M. E. connection.) on last Sunday week, Kev 8. L Hammond elder, amountinp to $330 10, to- ward paying the debt due on the chureh. Firtsestn Srrast Cotorsp Prespyrsrian | Cuview.—We learn that $500 was cleared by , the “Black Swan” concerts given for the ben- | efit of the cvlored peoples’ Fifteenth street — Church. Sixeutan Detection or a Mcrperer.—A difficulty occurred between an old man named De Minton and a young man :amed Frank, ; Some time ago, near San Francisco, Cal, and a few days afterwards the old man’s body was fodnd, perforated by three bullets) Frank had borrowed a gun, but returned it goon af. terwards, still loaded, which circumstance he urged, when arres‘ed, as a pref of his inno- cence ofthecharge It was proved aftewards, , however, that Frank had unloaded the gun, | and placed in it a heavy charge of powder and anumber of bullets—ha:l gono in search of the old man—found him alone in the gulch MARRIED. he Rey.
