Evanz reported back from the cem: mittee on finance, the bill increasing the talary of the clerk of the centre market. The 5 oe being on tbe third reading— Mr. Magrader opposed the bill, on the ound that ite enactmeat would pave the way f the increase ef the sslaries of all the ethér clerks of the city’s markets. In this case the incumbent was hardly warm in his place. He could uot plead long service, or a rise in the the cost of living since he took office. Mr. M. spoke at come length to show the injustice of | t @ great taxation now upon the citizens of Washington. Some limit, he insisted, must be put upon the expenses of the corporation, and he thought this an appropriate opporta- is ty make the commencement. : - Evans urged the passage of the bill. The increase proposed waa but $200. Ile was for paying such officers of the corporation well. Beef had risen to15 conts a pound, and other necessarics of life in proportion. Mr. Magruder moved to amend this bill by adding aclause increasing the salary of the assis‘ant clerk of the Centre Market to $300 per ancum; amendment agreed to. Mr. Borrows made some remastm in favor of a daily market. The debate upon this bill was continued ia desultory remarks by Messrs. Evans, Magru- der, Houston, Bayly, Pepper and Marks. When Mr. Magruder woved further te amend the bill by adding a clause ino the salaries of all the clerks of the city markets fifty per cent. Mr. Hill urged that an increase of fifty per cent. for | of them was too much. He would vote fot an increase of twenty per cent. Mr. Magruder modified his amendment by striking out fifty percent. and ineerting thirty- os and — _ cent. jesars. Lar- ner, to be the beok-keeper of the Corporation, vice James T. Cisrke, removed, was then laid before the Beard. Mr Bayly opposed action on this nomina- tion until the committee to examine the state of the bocks of the Corporation could report on his Stnoss, as evieced by his work. He was satisfied that the books were very badly kept, and that the appoin'ment of the tax elerk was seriously to be reg: tted, if properly kept books were desizable. ie moved that this nominativn iie over for two woeks. Stia Amosa tuz Loporns.—For several lay past, an old hound has been taking iginga in the trial-room of the guard house. Last night, about the time the lodgers were some one caught ihe hound and tied a pack of fire crackers to his tail, and set fire to them. The hound started— the crackera began to explode—and the lodg- ers, frightened almost as badly as the dog, began to secure thomselves from supposed dan- ge: by leaping upon the benches, and travel. ing from side to sideofthe room The scene was cara, ts it lasted, but the dog left in less than 2 40, and it is probable will not return again. — Mr Matone Rarmoxp —This gentleman gives his long promised humorous readings trom his own work, this evening, for the bene efit of the great Macaliisier. Many are most anxious tohearhim. He is highly spoken of by the press on both sides of the A‘laniiv, and no doubt will command a crowded auditory. He is not only an accomplished gentleman, but a bold and dashing specalator, having reconily paid the great magician $20 000 for nd the British Prov inces. Baptismal Ceresmony—A Slight Sectarian meute—Advice Gratis—The Mayor's Ap- pointments—Old Hunker Know Nothings eo Cold—Sufferings of the Poor, C. Battimore, February 5, 1355. Quite an interesting ceremony took place last night in the Rev. Dr. Fuller's (Baptiat) Church. The ordinance of baptism was ad- ministered to Mrs, Wilson, « beautiful young widow, who resides in, and owns a splendid mansion at the corner of Washington and Mount Vernon Places, near the Monument. She recently became converted from Episco- Palian to Baptist faith. A large number cf her acqaaintances snd others were present to witness the ceremozy. The it was in- tensely cold. At the appointed time, susceed- ing certain preliminary arran, ents, the qounk convert was lead into baptismal erected immediately under the Pulpit: by the reverend divine. She was suitably ly | costumed, and looked more like the poet’s iJea! of an angel, tha thing earthly. There are to be several chang +s. The city collestorship, I am told, will ia all proba wah be given to the Rev. John N. McJilton, of the Ep al Church.
