EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, ANNIvVens ae Megtixe.—The fret ee of the Home Missionary Society of the ‘Niath Street Methodist Protestant Church came off on leet Tuesday evening. The President of the Society called the meet- ing to order, and services were opened with prayer by a and singing wy the choir. After which report was read by the Seo- retary, showing an increase in the membership during the last six months of about one hun- dred, and an a receipt of funds. Then Hon T D_ Eliot, of Mass., delivered the epening address. He alluded feelingly and eloquently to his former life hero, and of the changes which had occurred. fewold friends—old bouses—-old homes, he now saw. which be was familiar with twenty-five yeare ago. The theme of his address was the bene- fits of the Bible to society, and he treated the subject with an eloquence and an ability sel dom displayed by an active ; in politi- cal life. With Coleridge, he regarded the ~-Bible as the stateeman’s manual; but he rent farther. and said that it was the parent's manual also; ond that no one could study its precepts without great benefit, whatever their course of life mightbe. ? He then spoke of the influx of foreigners to this country. and the socialist opinions they zo often brought with them, and the harm it was likely to produce ; also of the Catholic and Mormon opisioas di:seminated among them so freely. both before and efter their arrival in this country ; then of our own hardy far- mer. who, ng but his wife and ax, and forgetting his book, is liable to have even the religious truths he learned in the land of the pilgrims perverted by the con-tant efforts of presely ters of unischievous and pernicious doc- trices. when be has no chance to revive the fessons «i hie youth It is our duty, then, to tay before them religious privileges and to teach them their use. Mr. Eliot's address was full of point, beauty, and terseress ; his voice clear and full; and such an earnestress pervaded his spzech, that it was plain be felt the truth of his subject He is not the first of the alumni of Columbia College who has been returned as a member of Congress. After the singing of a fine old anthem by the choir, Hon R W. whe et of Indiana, took the floor, and contin the subject bc- fore announced. He spoke with great earn- estness, in a style so siuple, yet so forcible, that ehowed he was not only master of his subject, but also the language requisite for its investment. He gave an idea ot border life, without religious privileges; spoke of t great want of bibles in the far West, and th avidity with which the American settlers, when they can obtain them, and the good that could be done among the emigrants who are panting for religious fresdom. but do not know of what it consists; this is one of the most glorious fields forthe missicnury the world can afford. The most interesting point of the address was the speaker's idea of quelling the frontier Indians. He thought we could easily do it by supplying them with Bibles and teachers that they might understand that book. The Indian is the moat religiously inclined of any class of mm, ard if we set about itin th - can ¢ vi by christianizing them, and, in time. make of them good citizens: and if Goverr ment. instead of armies of soldiers, would send missionarics, to keep them quiet would not occasion near the expense, blood sbed.«r labor now used, and would finally transform them into a valuable part of the commonwealth. Rev D E Reese, the pastor, ih 8 few words to the audien. liberality for funds to carr: of the society, with so success that ina short time over $100 was placed in the treas- ury. Among the many persons made life- members were the two speakers of the occa- sion, the pastor of the church. the president of the society, and the leader of the ohoir. insurance. —lIt will be perceived by an ad- vertisement in another column that the “Mu- tual Fire In: urance Company,” recently char- tered by Congress, are now ready to receive applications for insurance.
