A Novex axp Haxpsomm Present —It is ksown to most, if not all, of our readers, that the members of the Columbia Fire any have been, from time to time, the favored and grateful recipients of many beautifal and valuable presents from the fair hands of a —_—— and public spirited lady residing on pitol Hill. The elegant library of the com- ‘pany—their magnificent silver trumpet—their handscme banner—these, and other gifts, at- ‘test the munificent donations of their reepected “patroness The members of the company have, in their turn, hecomes donors; and, as a slight ackuowledgmert of their esteem and gratitude, <key presented to Mrs. Pendleton, on Monda: evening last, a | aged of beautiful Engli coach degs, recently imported into this coun- ‘ry, and valued at $75. The dogs are white, spotted with black, and are well trained, being similar in size and appearance to thore which accompany some of the splendid and fashiona- ble equipages of London. The presentation was made in = library hall, on if of the company, by their president, Captain Tait; aud the gift was received with an appropriate expression of thanks by the esteemed bene- faetress of the Columbia, by whom the donors Were afterwards handsomely entertained at her horpitable residence. A Faswionasuem Soinse.—We are informed that one of cur millionaires, who is the father ef three charming daughters, will, on to-mor- Tow evening, give a soiree in a style, if equal- led, never before eurpaseed in our city. Seven hundred invitations have already been sent out. The confecticnery is to be of the most rare and costly kind. Musicians have been engeged in New Yorkcity. The dresses for the young ladies, each, cost $300—the lace on each costing $160 alone, saying nothing of the jewelry and other ornaments. On this occa- sion, the eplendid new mansion of the host will, for the first time. be throws open, exbj iting the meat beautiful furniture amid the right lare of gas-lights. We learn that all the jes and gallants of Washington have been on the gut vive for an invitation ever since the affair was first mentioned. There will be much disappointment among those who do not get a billet doux asking them to come. Waar is “ Secon Sigur ?””—No doubt every man, woman, and child has seen this singular sentence posted up, for the week past, about the city, om the various corners, &c. Now, what is it, those of our readers who have not Seen it, will be anxious to learn, and those who bave, will be anxious to see again. We wish most heartily, it wa: in-our power to communicate the answer to the above ques- Sion, but all we can now say is that it is not Yentriloquism, clairvoyance, mesmerism, or any of these isms, of which we are assured it is neither. It is the must impenetrable mys- tery we have ever yet seen. We have now Witumessed its performance several times, and watched every movement of the great conju Tor, but with the effect of being more com- pletely puazied than ever. There was an exz- tremely fagbionable attendance in the dress circle last evening. Those of our friends who would see this mysterious man, had better se- cure their seats early. Goop Apvice —If Mr. Rhodes, who con- ducts the sales of books nightly at 474 Penn- sylvania avenue, will give his audience a chance to put in a word edgewise, we think it would be forhis interest. Because he is fami liar with a catalogue of books, it is vo reason why he should talk quite so rapid; and if he intends to keep up his sales in this city, we ean only say, with all his faults, he will givo you books at your own price. Grorcurown, Jan. 31, 1855. A very large and intelligent audience was in attendance at Forrest Hall, to hear the lec- ture of Prof. Dimitry. The able and lucid manner in which he diseussed his favorite theme, “The statuary and architecture of Athens,” fully sustained his reputation as a plessing and eloquent speaker. His ideas were clothed fn most chaste and beautiful language, and brought down frequent bursts of applause. We are pleased to learn that Mr. Thecker, who was badly injured some days since by being thrown trom his wagon, and a child of Mr. Woody, that was frightfully wounded by a similar accident, are, under the skilfal treat- ment of Dr. Soyder, rapidly recovering from their injuries.
