. TAR. EVENING § pena 8 é Dainty tea ie. Be-ssteae LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. VEGETATION.—The concluding lecture on vegetation was delivered at the Smithsonian, by Prof. Asa Gray, on last Friday evening, before a large and attentive audience. Mr. @ray devoted this lecture to still fur- ther illastration of the relation of plants to the un; the v ble was viewed as a ma- for tran ng mineral into organic matter, or earth and sir into food, through an agency set in operation by the eun When exposed to the sun, the foliage evolves o gen gas, which is an unerring index of tha deae ation of organic matter. This was shown by comparing water, the food of the plant, with its fabric and genera! products—the differeace in the two being represented by the oxygen gas given off by Stowing plants—thus vegeta tion serves aE peg the air we breathe. In every step of their growth, plants withdraw a portion carboni: acid gas from the nir; when, if it aconmula‘ed, it would become del- eterious to animal Jife, and give back ox, . the element 20 necdiul to animal life. Thus the plants, while they purify the air, at the same time transform air—water being a part of it—into fod; and this they do only under the influence of the sun. The vast amount of matter which haw bsen organized by plants, was then considered, in J ine present vegetation, in decomposing vexe- table matter, in mould, peat. and coal, and in the whole extant animal kingdom. He explained what becomes of all this or- ganized matter by showing the changes it un- dergoes—first, in the plant itself after life has departed ; then in the living vegetable; then when transferred as food to the animal. He then illustrated the reverzion of organ- ised matter, by decay, into the original inor- ganic state, in which the plant took th te- i then the decompositions which take place in living plants and animals, the mate- rials in all being given back to mineral state in the form of carbonic acid, water, and am- movia, viz: in the same condition the plant tock them. Combustion of organic matter, as of wood, &c., produces the same result. De- cay and many other procesres carried out in the living plant, and the respiration of ani mals, rece shown to be equivalent to combus- tion, and to evolve just ag much heat as would be evolved by the burning of the same mate- tial; and the heat given out is absorbed by the foliage of the plant fom the sun at the time the matter become organized. In the plant and animal power is expended and work is done as the matter decays. The suo, in the production of organic matter in plants, has endowed it wita force derived from uwelf, which may be expended in various wayr, sad which man variously directs. So it is sun heat evolved by vegetable mat ter, seen im decay in hot-beds, or in fuel used to warm us, cook (or us, drive steam engines for us, dc. In the case of wood. the heat came frow the sun a few years ago; that of coal, many years ago. So the light of a pine torch, or camphene extracted from pine, re- cently came from the sun. But in coal gas, we light our hall to-night with sunshine stored up for this purpose by a vegetation which flourished hundreds of years before the crea- tion of man. Itis the same, also, both as to the result and the source of the light, whether we burn a candle made of wax of the bayberry or of wax made out of sugar by the bee, or a tallow candle, or of materials made out of the herbage of the ex or sheey; whether we burn el extracted from corn, or feed that corn to a pig and burn lard vil There is no longer room for doubt than ani mal beat is :un beat, that our bodies are warmed by suu heat, which also warws the earth's surface by direct emanation from the common source Heat and light were then viewed as 2 force convertible into still ether feras, among them mechanical power Every act of muscular energy decomposes a portion of the mus which food resupplies by the incorporation o} new material The lecturer closed with an original argu- Ibent against materialism—against the ifea that matter itself may be so organized as to think. For. if even the forces which the wil! causes the body to exert be not forces inherent in the matter of the body, but derived from the sun, much more must the power or prinei- ills be distinct from the body one may be traced back to the sun, itself a created thing, may not the power that thinks and wills claim a higher origin, even in the underived fountain and source of thought and will? Tae Bartet —The Rous etts, on re-opening the Nationa! Theatre on Saturday night last, were received throughout their entire per: formances with such applause as is =~ ac- heir corded by a Washington audience. beautiful ballet of the evening, the Giselle, woe never better performed. Caroline, Ade- laide, and Theresine, created each a perfect fu- ror in their respective parts, while C ementine, too, came in for a {sir share of the thunder of the gratified audience. Nothing in the way of ballet, ever seen in our city, exceeded the grace of Caroline, the elegance of The:esine, or the piquant agility of their charming sister cased in male attire, who is by long o.ids the best formed woman we cver caw on the stage. Corby and Saollosy, iu the after Piece, kept the bouse in a roar of laughter, both comic pantominists without equals elsewhere in the United States. Corby is Teally the finest comic dancer we ever saw ; and, a tray- eled friend, an enthusiastic connoisseur of the ballet assures, at this moment, without his ‘arisian boards. A Nova Stent. —Our attention. yesterday, was attracted by a crowd assembled in front of the General Post Office, and ever anxious to keep the readers of the Star fully posted in all that transvires in our city, we joined the throng. The irst view revealed a go cart, ia which was collected aL and varied assort- ment of “housebold and kitshen furvitnre, consisting ot kettles, pots, frying pans, tin cups,” &¢.,4c Surmounting all were a pair cf boots, attracting much attention trom their Peculiar appearance, and giving assurance of having seen hard serv Elbowing our way through the “‘outsiders,”’ we gained the icner cirele. and held converse with the owners of | assemblage of articles. They were 2n old man and his wife, over fifty years of age, travel stained, and giving evidences of fatigue. They had stopped at this spot to en Joy © resting spell, and his dogs, of which he had two or three, lay down panting and went to alee Their appearanee was rough and uncouth, and the haod of Time had been pressed beavily on both husband aed wife. In thie mapper they bad traveled from In- dispopolis, the journey cecupying seven weeks. He told us that his object :n eoming was to see tome old friends in Georgetown before he died, and als to see what improvements had been wade in this part of the country since he last visited it be had been a coachman in the employ of President Joba Quincy Adams; and he enter- tained the crowd with an eulogium upon the character of that distinguished personage, which would have been oreditable to a person possessing 2 mere polished exterior. When this cdd looking couple were sufficiently rested. he gave the word of command—“ for- ward " Ile placed bimself in the shafts of bis go-cart, adjusted the chain around bis burly shoulders, called his dogs together, the old lady touk ber position ia the rear for the purpoee of pushing, and they took up the line of march. aitracting the attention and commis- eration of all who beheld them, as through the centre of the streets they plodded their weary Wey Messns. Nicar Pouice or tae Sxcoxp Wasv:—We bave been wu: by several citi zens to request your ular attention to the rowdyi+m which ocours nearly every night between midnight and day break, on £ street, between Thirteenth and the theatre, to the grievous annoyance of all dwellers in that vi- cinity. This ix the case especially on Satur- day hod Sunday nights, when the screeching, swearing, and scuffling is worse than at any other time. The presence of a watchman in that immediate vicinity, once or more for a week, would probably result in a dosen ar- reate, and thus break up this intolerable nui- cance Fora yearand a half be said, § A Musicat Convention in Wasnincton.— The Board of Managers of the Union Choir Association, having had the Subject of a mu fical convention for some time under con- eideraticn, have devided upon fod such 3 convention in this city. which will take place fully matured. as soon as the plans can be Cireulars will be addressed to the various musical societies throughout the United States, inviting them to a partieipation in it; and we may confidently e: al at- tendanee Such a convention will ro doubt ae ty hgsarig a of ep of ee classes ; , Rot only will it a@ source ification to Poa fk cireles particularly, ut generally interesting and instructive to those whose tastes are-that way inclined, but whose avocaticns debar them from participa. ting in this delightful art. The plans are yet in a crude and unfinished state, but as soon as completed we shall spread them before our readers. Professor I B. Woodbery, of New York, will be the lecturer and director on the cecasion, and the session will continue three or four days. Much gond is anticipated to spring from this movement, as it will tend greatly to improve the style of church music paiticalarly, besides awakening an interest in regerd to this hitherto much r jcted accom- plishment. The committes ha the matter incharge—Messrs. Potter, F. A, Tucker, Thos. McGill, Sheriff, and Wood—are energetic and indefatigable gentlemen, and we hope, in a short time to give a more minute statement. Tar “ BLAck Swax.”—We understand that at the urgent solicitation of numerous pastors of churches in this city, among them the Rev. Geo. W. Sameon, Rev. Dr. Sm ith, and Rev A G. Carothers, Professors Scheel and Fischer have concluded to assist in the concerts which will be given on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday pegs of this week, in the Fif- teenth street Pres! apa ehurch, to liquidate the debt incurred in the erection of that edi- fice. By reference to our advertising col- umns, it will be seen that the “‘ Black Swan” isto be the principal attraction; and, from the celebrity she has acquired, both ia this country and in Europe, ro doubt these con- certs will prove profitab'e enough to attain the objeetin view We -.- derstand, further, thst the music will bec’ a high order, and that the choir attached t :he church are ca- pable of performing the». st diffizult music, with credit to themselves ind satisfaction to those who may attend. Trisity Cavrcm —There was a large con- gregation acsembled in this sacred edifice yes- terday morning. The Kev. Mr. Cumm gs took for his text: “Am I my brother’s keep- cr.’ From this sentence, he showed that there was a responsibility attached to every one of us, and that it is character that cansti- tutes responsibility The influence ef char- acter, he said, was the weightiest of all influ exces. If a Demosthenes were to ascend the pulpit, and preach without character, who wuld be influenced thereby? The preacher then cited varicus persone to whom he attri- bated this excellent quality, amongst others he named Wilberfcree, upon whom he paesed a high eulogium, and ranked him next to St. Paul as a possessor of this virtue. Also, Sir Tanac Newton, Sir Matthew Hale, Mrs. Frey, and others. His personation wis truly sublime, showing vast erudition, and carrying convic- tion to all his hearers. Ropert Heiter’s Woxpers —This modern Cagliostro appeared on his magnificent stage, on Saturday evening, before an audience that filled the ample space of Iron Hall. All that the ci'y can boast of beauty and fashion was ibere. and such an audience, appreciating as it did, the great and a parently superhuman efforts of the great a-tist before them aused the adven: of Mr. Heller to be an era in the annals of amusements in Washington. The mysteries were all beautifully executed, caus- ing the audience to be more and more as- tounded, as each succeeding experiment wis jintreduced. But we were more perplexed with the second sight mystery than anything else. This is something for the reflective portion of our community. But, nous rerrons. We are going again to-night, and can perhaps tell our readers more about it in our next im- pression. Carusr's Sanoos—Doner’s “ popem.’—It will be seon, by an advertisement in another jcolama, that the celebrated writer. wit. and vocalist, Ossian E. Dodge, late editor and pros prietor of Dodge’s Literary Muscum. intends giving a concert in our city this evening. Our {citizens will resnember that this is the sam ize who “dodged” into the best seat at Je! Lind’s first concert in Boston, by paying 25 for a single ticket. Since then his suc- c both as an editor and vocalirt, proves him not only an * artful” but an exce ingly successful dodger. Having had the pleasure of hearing his talented company on several eceasions in the North, we recommend them to all lovers of mirth and good harmony. n Cuorce Booxs.—Notwithetanding the lim- ited circulation of money and the many amuse- ments of the day, we are oR to learn that the extensive sales of Mr. PW Rhodes, of valuabie books, at Fitzzerald’s Block, No. 474 Pennsylvapia avenue, was most promising on Saturday evening last, and we understand it is the intention of this gentleman to continue his sales every evening during the session of Congress, so that our citizens, and strangers from the different States, b attending his sales, will not only be am by the tonguey wit of the crier, but obtain rich and elegant books at their own prices. Mr. Rhodes says he has seai‘ered literature in aimost every city from Maine to Oregon. and that the intel- ligent eitizens of Washington must take a double dose of at least five hundred thousand volumes before the 4'h of Mareh next. His business is praiseworthy, and merts the pat- ropage of the reading community, which he now receives nightly at his sales room. Fing.--We were in error in stating in Sat urday’s paper, that there was no fire on the night previous. It seems about two o’clock Saturday morning, Mrs Phillips, residing at No 341 Twelfth street, between M and N, wa awakeved by the smell of smoke in the house, and upon examination, it was found that fire had got between some rafters, which being discovered early, extinguished without much damage. The alarm made through the streets that night, was by a neighbor, who passed down Eleventh street, but the night be- ing ietensely cold, did not succeed in getting out many persons. J Senpay AmvseMents.—Our police officers have been informed of oertain dances that oceur en Sabbath evenings in a portion of the city where disorderly conduc: is nothing new. “Phree phights” usually make those dances interesting to those who attend them, and give troube to the officers on duty in the neighborhood. The Captain of the Guard and Chief of Po- lice will pay particular attention to these par- ties hereafter; and if they ccntinue, the jour- nal of the guard house will chow who pays the piper.
