RECEIVED BY THE Con GRESSIONAL LIBRARY FROM THE REPUBLIC oF SwitzerLaxp.—A most interesting and valu- able accession to our National Library has been made within the last few days by the Presentation through our citizen, the Consul General of Switserland, Mr. John Hitz, from the Helvetic Confederacy, of the following works, most elaborately bound: 1. Decree of the Helvetic Confederacy of the year 1847 and 848, 5 vole, folio; 2. Official collection of ‘acts concerning the Public Law of Switser- land, 3 vols., folie; 3. Berneil Officiell des jieses concernant le droit public de la Suisse, Bole. folio; 4. Fransciui, Statistics of Swit- serland, 3 vols., folio; 5. Bluntschli, Federal Laws of Switzerland, 2 yols., folio; 6. Mul- ler, Histoire de la Suisse; 18 vols. folio; 7. Studer Geology of the Aips, 2 vols. folio; 36 volumesin all. The above works are decided- ly among the handsomest presents the Libra- ry hes ever received from any Government, and reflect much credit upon our little sister Republic. We hope our Government wil] not be tardy in acknowledging in some appropro- priate manner the high regard in which they oid this flattering testimonial of friendly sentiments from the oldest existing Republic. Sraxcer’s Panorama —We are glad to per- ceive, by an advertisement in another column, that Stanley’s Great Panorama will soon be again exhibited in Washington, at Odd Fel- lows’ Hall. Many of our readers have alread seen this work, when first unrolled at the Na- tional Theater, but it has been since repaint- ed in part by the original artist, and will now be found more interesting and perfect. The “Western Wilds” has been seen by many thousands of people since its opening here, and always with the highest delight a pproba- tion. In Baltimore it was on exhibition three weeks, and the press of that city proclaimed it the most beautiful and instructive work of art ever seen there. It will now appear to more adyentage, Odd Fellows’ Hall being better ljapted to it: and the price, too, only twenty- ei cents, will place the present exhibition within the reach of all. Tas Fire at1ae GEoRGETOWN COLLEGE. We learn that the firemen, and others, who assisted at the fire yesterday morning at Georgetown College were treated in the most hospitable manner by the President, Rev. Ber- nard Maguire, who set out an excellent break- fast and liberally feasted all present. Mr. Maguire delivered brief address expressing his liveliest gratitude to thcse who at this in- olement season, had aided in ruscuing the Col- tege property from the devouring element. “Tar Nieut Line.”—Many of our readers are ignorant of “the night line.” It eonsists of afew dilapidated coaches and venerable quadrupeds, belonging to different individuals, who bring them on the streets only at night when the better coaches have been taken off. The money paid for one of the regular coaches would purch the whole line. The price paid for one im and coach, by the present owner was fifty-five dollars. It iseaid that the proprictors of these coaches make money by them, notwithstanding their hard looks. A Maexiricest Room. —On eenaey last tho at Willard’s wero, for the first time, ushered into bis handsome and capacious dining saloon. Two hundred Foes were seated, leaving room for some three handred more. The room was universally admired, the common expression was, ‘‘ How fine! how beautiful '*’ Notwithstanding the great size of the room, and the coldness of the weather, it was comtortably and pleasantly heated. Willard can now boast of one of the finest dining saloons in the Union. Waern ts rue Comvissioner ?—A number of our subscribers, living on I street, complain that the pump between Sixth and Seventh streets is out of repair, and bas been so for sometime. Where is the Commissioner of the Foprth Ward? Why not have the pump re- ired ? Prcvaees Bank Notzs —The notes of the Exchange Bonk of Selden, Withers &., are now worth sixty centsin thedollar! At least the brokers buy them at that rate. A fine Not Resvrnscrey.—Thérs has been a re- port current in this city for some days to the effect that the saxton had d of the Se aire matric tater ored man inquiry, ere Pha tenet It appesrs that laced in the public vault, to isno truth in the report. the body was seuatt thare ‘or a week, at the expiration of which time the ye ae ibe! of the deceased prepared to pon appear. ey at the appointed time, it was discovered that the was removed, when the sexton said that he had been ordered, a day or two previous, to bury it. He could not tell who| « gave him the order. The relatives, and the society who had buried Dick, suspicioning foul play, had the grave opened in their presence, when it was discovered that the body was| > really there. As this matter caused considerable excite- ment among our colored population, we are Pleased at being thus able to explain it. Trans ALLEGHANY Norgs.—The last War- Trenton, Va., “Flag of 98” contains the follow- ing, which was an answer to inquiries by the Sheriff: Treasury Orrice, Vir@inis, Richmond, Nov. 24, 1854 Wm. M. Hume, Esq., Sheriff of Fauquier county—Dear Sir: The notes of all the Banks of this State are required by law to be re- ceived in payment of public dues, #0 long as they pay gold or silver coin for their issues; the collectors of the revenue, however, should be very careful in relation to the issues of any bank, the notes of which are, or may be dis- credited; as the Treasurer will require, in all cases where such notes are tendered by the collectors of the revenue, the most conclusive proof that they were reeeived by them in pay- ment of public dues. Yours, respectfully, J. B, Stovaut, Treasurer, Rep Mex’s Girt.—This afternoon, a stone prepared by Mr. W. A. Griffith, and the work executed in excellent style, will be presented by Tuscarora Tribe of Red Men to the mem- CL of Washington. ‘The presentation will take place at 3 o’clock—Dr. S. A. Hl. Tae Parapge YESTERDAY.—The new com- pany of Highlanders, which paraded yester- day, looked remarkably fine. ‘Lhey presented quite a soldier-like appearance, ‘heir dress is beautiful and universally admired. During the afternoon, refreshments were spread out at the hospitable residence of Captain Carrington, which wete partaken of with soldierly zest. The boys’ company, the Union Infantry, were also out, and looked well. “Tug Sxow was Come.”’—This was the ex- pression of a little fellowin our office this forenoon, about quarter past eleven o'clock. We looked out, and, sure enough, the snow had come. It snowed so fast that in fiye minutes’ time the ground was covered with snow. As we go to press, the snow sterm which promised soon to bring out the sloighs, haz passed away, taking with it every cloud, and leaving only a cold bright winter's sun. Satz or [naesipz —Notwithstanding the cold weather, quite a number of persons as- sembled yesterday at the sale of Thomas Hew- Ting, Esq.’s estate, called “Ingleside.” The Property was bought by Capt. Britain fur Arnold Harris, Esq., ofthis city. Mr. McQuire, the auctioneer, knocked it down to him at 500. Batt oy tas TuscaroRa’s.—The ball of Tuscarora Tribe of Red Men comes off to- Bight, at Odd Fellows’ Hall, Navy Yard. The Tuscaroras are a fine set of fellows, full of en- terprise, and know how things should be done. From the interest which they take in the ball we conclude it will be a brilliant affair. We promise those who love the exhilarating dance @ treat, if they call at Odd Fellows’ Hall to- night. Tae Torxer Trapz.—The New Market (Shenandoah county, Va.,) Spirit of Democra- cy says: “Some of our enterprising citizens have engaged in a fowl speculation—one party has driven off a lot of 750 turkeys for thé Alexandria and Washington markets, and has about the samo number engaged for a secon trip. An>thet party has taken about 500 to the same market Success to such a fowl business.’’ Nor Guitty.—In the Oriminal Court, yes- terday, Isaac Jones, aman of eighty-seven yeara of age, was tried on the charge of com- mitting @ most aggravated and disgusting as- vault on the person of a girl twelve years of age. The jury were out but a few minutes, and returned with averdict of not guilty. Buiiarp’s Panorawa or New York City. This work oloses its exhibitions here Satur- day evening, at Odd Fellows’ Hall, Seventh street. To-morrow and Saturday it exhibits in the afternoon at Zo’clock.
