Tris Sam, not Sauce —In mame of General Houston at the columns, as a candidate for the Presidency in 1856, subject only to the decision or the people, we made a trifling typographical error in the Christian or baptismal name of General Hous- ton; which is Sam, instead of Samuel. We resume that people generally thought, as we id, that Sam was an American and vulgar abbreviation of the sacred name of Samuel— General Houston was christened after the Revolution, and when “Uncle Sam” was the substituied and com- mon term used for ‘‘ United States ;” and his father, being one of the patriots, and in rather indigent circumstances, consulted both patriot- ism and economy, and called his son Sam, feeling himself too poor to give him a name with more than one sylla- ble. His mother demurred to it at first, being @ very pious Presbyterian, and having a great veneration for the name of Samuel, one of the old prophets—but Sam early exhibiting some of the boyish sparks kindled and thrown off in the Xeyolution, she became reconciled to the short name of one syllable, and delighted but this is not so after “Uncle Sam; _— General Houston's oar and how he came it. to call him her darling Sam.
