For the Interior Department The New York Exprets.—The conductors of this journal, whilom claiming to be conser- vative, are sadly bitten by the prevailing manis, and accordingly devote their editorial columne, for the most part, to efforts to argue the public into the belief of the truth of the thousand and one silly falsehoods against their Catholic fellow-citisens with which men who seek to gratify the prejudices of ignorance and to indulge the paseion of malignant ha'red under the cloak of intense seal for Protestant- ism, are now flooding the country. This habit of wholesale slacdering of the Catholics, seems to be epidemic in this country; while in England it rages perpetually. It prevailed here about the time of the burning of the Catholiy female seminary near Boston, and of . 870 02 dividual firm, shakirg in the wind, being based on a deposit of six per cent. Richardson, Esq , tho editorial war-horse of the Argus, had fired @ broadside into a certain rev- srend gentleman cf this city for desecrating he pulpit, on last Tovanksgiving day, by preaching a political sermon. I now learn that the divine alluded to was the Rev Chomas Myers, of the Methodist Protestant vhurch. The sermon preached in the vhoreh contiguous to the Richmond market wang its delivery quite an excitement took place in the congregation. Some rose from their seats, and pronounced what had been preached to them basely false and departed from the sacred temple in disgust. Others followed suit, until the reverend speaker was : ; + teft not much more than em ws for ap tends that— Chat they can issue no notes without deposit. | ‘he Catholic churches in P’ hiladelphia, by | sudience His remarks were raed eh turned “Web a t ing with the treasurer of the Commonwealth | bs. It is somewhat to be regretted that preach- ers do not, as a general thing, cultivate more closely the study of human nature. This, to thea, is next in importance to the stady of theology. It bege:s common sense, and may serve us @ safeguard against breakera and quicksand-, which lie in their course as well as in the rugged road of wayward sianers. ‘Khe Hon. Reverdy Johnson has returned from Europe, whither he had gone on profes- sional business, and looks well. He did high credit not only t> himself but to the Baltimore bar, in his speeches before the European courts. T understand that some difficulty has oo- surred between Mr Walcott, manager of the Hlliday s rect theatre, and the proprietors, which has caused his separation from the es- tablishment The inimitable and popular comedian, John © Owens, commences an eogagement at this tueatre next week. A full house mast be the result. The Front street is doing afair business The Bateman children are araeing largely at the Museum Business continues quiet. The recent Euro- pean news has had rather an unfavorable effect on trade generally Breadstuffs are dull. Flour ia slightly on the decline, but my impression is it will again, rally. Ben Bout. GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE, drunken Irish, English, and Scotch haters of a Christian sect, who desecrated the cause of Protesisntism by committing the outrage in its revered name, and also about the time that some midnight incendiaries blew up with powder the roof of the Catholic church at Dorchester, Massachusetts. The conductors of the Express are at least sufficiently informed concerning the history of the times, to know well that in accusing their Catholic fellow-citizens everywhere ot all sorts of crimes and evil intentions, they are ccattering falsehoods broad-cast over the land. They know that, as citizens and chris. tians, the Catholics of the United States do their duty to society in all respects quite as conscientiously as any other class of American churchmen. Under these circumstances, hon orable men cannot fail to view their course with the intense disgust, which a display of sinister motives always generates in the breasts of the right minded. Aots, such as theirs that might be overlooked in the conduct of the notoriously ignorant or weak in precep tions of right and wrong, cannot be forgotten when disgracing a journal conducted by men who for a long series of years have made pre- tensions to erudition and conservatism. It is somewhat remarkable that the Express has notoriously possessed legs irfluence than any other New York daily, although none has sarpassed it in the abi.ity with which it has long been conducted. rom its course in seizing up and gloating over every “‘MoSwish’’ roorback, which brutal igne:ance and licen- tious animosity are now engaged in manufac- turing inthe hope that the prejudiced and ill-informed in the community will be impozed upen by them, it strikes us that its habit must kave been to play the demagogue after the same fashion, upon questions appertaining to the local affairs of New York This is the only rational key at hand to that journal’s notorious want of influence at home. Bold Roorbacks.—We find the following in the New York ‘iribune of the 28th instant: A Hostite Demonstration AGAinst HOLLAND Specias Dispateh to The N. ¥. Tribune. Wasaineton, Nov. 27 —{ learn from a reli able suurce that the Administration contem- plate a naval demonstration in the ports of Duich India, to open the way for American diplomacy in that obstinately bigoted country. A domand will first be made at the principal seaport town for the payment of the hundred thousand dollars due to Captain Gibson, and upop a refusal to pay, the town will be bom barded. But itis not expected that this will be recestary ; the authorities will pay at once under protest, and then negotiations will be transferred to Washing'on—just what the President desires. Tho President has no au- thority to declare war technically, but he can resort to euch methods as this to enforce de- mands. After the settlement of the affair in quesuion, the Government intends then to send out to Java a Government agent uniting eon- salar to diplomatic ; owers, to compel this peo- ple, after the fashion of Japan, to fursake her exclugive system for a more enlightened one. Now, we have to say, that there is not one word of truth in this statement—not a word. This special telegraphic correspondent of the Tribune has bgen most egregiously imposed upon by some one or other. We have satisfied ourself that the reliable eource from which tbese stories came, has not spoken a single word of truth throughout the budget. The regular special telegraphic correspondent of the Tribune is usually eo careful to ateer clear of such impositions, that we take it tor granted that some tyro, not that writer, has been gam- moned in this instance. ali this The /ute/ligencer presents its readers with people—those of very ordinary _underscand- the adverse strictures of the Charleston Mer. | ‘2S—C4n comprehend this proposition. cury wpon ‘he last Detroit speech of Gener,} | Lt has always been regretted by the friends Cass. Georeerown, Nov. 29, 1854. Yesterday was a gala day for the old Vigi- lant Fire Company. At one o'clock the com- pany moved from their engine house, in fuli uniform, marshaled by their presadent and vice presiden:, drawing with them their hand some néw engine, beautifully decorated with American flags, &c.. and headed by Prosperi’: fice band, which discoursed mo-t excellent music. After parading through several of our principal streets, they proceeded to Washing- ton, along Pennsytvani: avenue to Seventh street, and up Sever th street to the Northern Liberties engine house, where they were hand- somely entertained by a number of the mem- bersof saidcompany. The Franklin and Per- severance bells were tolled a merry peal as the visitors passed. The company did not visit Georgetown college as was in ended, owing to an overeight on their part in not offi- cially notifying the inmates of the college or theic intent on to do so, which, we learn, wss a great disappointment to the students and all, as the College cadets were in readiness and waiting to give them a handsome reception This disappointment will h-rezfter be fally made amends for by the Vigilant boys paying them a formal visit of which due and official notice will be given. It was very generally thought by those who saw them that the com- pany never befure presented so fine appear- ance. Their ball at night was @ splen did affair, and was attended by a large and fashionable company. The Northern Liber- ties and Frar.kiin companies of your city were well represented At 8 o'clock, Prosperi’s full band opened the ball by playing in ex- sellent style the Vigilant Grand March, which was of itself a rich treat to all present; after which President Wright, in a neat and Py speech presented to the Northern Liberties belle, Miss Charlotte Kedman, the handsome bracelets which had been procured by the company, which were received by the lady in a very few pleasing and appropriate remarks. The bracelets bear the following inscription : ~* Presented to Miss Charlotte Kedman by the Vigilant Fire Company, Nov. 28, 1854’? We bardly know what further to say in regard to tho ball—for it certsinly was a brilliant af fair, fully equaling, if it did not surpass, any ball ever given in Georgetown Goud music and refreshments, pretty ladies - who seemed to enjoy themselves to the fullest extent—and polite gentlemen werein abundance We are tappy to be able to say that all the membere of the company acquitted themselves in a gai {ant manner, and the occasion will long be remembered with pleasurable emotions ‘he proceeds, which will be considerable, is to be devoted to the improvement of the company’s hall and library.
