EVENING STAR. BOCAL INTELLIGENCE. ACCIDENT ON THE Rarzoap, But wo Laves Lost,—On Saturday evening, as the 5 e’clock train was coming here from Baliimore, an accid nt oc- cofred which threatened fearful results, but fortu- nately no person was even hurt. It appears that at Pesn. branch, just on crossing the bridge, two oxen got in the way, and were carried forward by thecow- catcher and engine until after passing the bridge, when the obstruction ¢aused the upsetting or we locomotive, and four vars followed, stopping the whole tran. The gers were in at alarm, bui Oaptdi Hikaplnes, who was tbr dt the ume, soon quieted their feara by satisfying them that there was no danger, although much ineonve- uience. There lay the monster iron-horse prosttate, aad there one of the oxen lay dead, the other being much injured, the wack was also torn up, and ther were the pa-sengers not knowing whattodo. It being but about fourteen miles from the city, all who could mot secure conveyances walked in, while oth ers remained im the cars, waiting the turn of event- that would put them on their way rejoicing. Nothing could be dope, however, as it was Saturday evening, the workmen at the depots Daring Tetired to ir homes, unul the next mori ing. it. Calvert, ore exteugive E.rins.are near by the scene of dis- eter, a8 soon as he beard of the accident, from luis weil-filled larder, bountifully supplied the wauts ot the passemgers who were compelled to remain over The down train at 8 o’clock, on Saturday evening, and the train at 4 o’clock, yesterday morning, were compelied to lie over at Beltsville until the damage: could be repaired. Those who «pent the night at that noted place, will for along time remember the poor fare and bad rum kept at the tavern there. Inu stead of paying some attention to the wants of the passengers, who were wiiling to pay liberally forsup. pec and breakfast, the landlord was wholly absor°rd ib disposing of his imitations of brandy and whisky, whieh could be properly called “liquid porson” ana “distilled damnation.”’ At 9 o’clock, yesterday morn- ing, things Were so arranged as to allow the cars to ase over the road, when the trains were brought to Washin ton, much to the joy of those who spent an unpleasant night at Beitsville. The conductors de- serve credit for their kind attention to the passengers. Sometuine or Great VaLve.—Our youngfellow- citizen, Mr. L. Stewart, not long since patented 9 saw which bids fair to reduce the power required hereafter in sawing up lumber, nearly, if not quite. one half. We have geen it in operation, and know irom mach experience in auch metters, that what we say of its performances is true. We are also bome out in this opinion by that of all the scientific and practical men in this city who have witnessed its operation. It took the premium, as it deserved to do, at the recent fair ef the Maryland Institute. its teeth ‘of the saw) are so constructed, as that each tooth cuts its way clean through the wood without tearing or forcing the saw ; each tooth ope Fates as a mortcing chisel, and cuts a chip or cone oi the thickness of the advanced space (vertical) between it and the tooth standing next The cutting part (front) of each tooth is The biade of the saw is of equal widh. That is. ats back forms a line parallel with the inclined plane formed by the points of the teeth, each succeeding One jutting deeper than the one before it. The width of the opening between each pair of te: this reg aitated by the jength of the saw and the size of the timber upon which it is designed to use it, so ‘hat each space between the teeth shall be capable of holding the chips or core that the tooth behind it cuts. The saw is capable of being conveniently attached to any mill without new rigging or fixtures ef a: y kind whatever. a The curious in mechanical improvements will find one of these saws in operation at the machine shop ef Mr. McClelland, on the corner of E and Its Streets, where, with a three or four horse power en- gine, it is doing as much ascan be done by any othe: saw we know of, driven by an eight or ten horse power engine. Contents or THE Corner Stone.—The corner ‘Stone of the Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church being Jaid this afternoon, on the comer of Cand four-and-a-half streets, contains the following arti- cles and memorials : A register of the Baltimore Conference, and ger- eral tigutes; Bible without note or comment—the received version—which is considered ihe rule of faith and practice; Methodist hymn book, contain- ing the Methodist theology in verse; the Book of the Methodist Church Discipline, containing the laws, usages, and economy of the Methodis. Church beautiful copy of Hickey’s Constitution of the U: States, presented by the compiler, embo ying th organic law o! the land; the inaugural addresses of the first four Presidents, and of the present Presi- dent; the Compendium of the Seventh Census, just printed, and not bound; the papers of the District, and the papers of the Methodist denomination; the pames of the architect and builders of the church; the names of the trustees of the church and baild- ing committee; the name of the general agent of the church, Rev. Henry Sheer, and of the Methodist Bishop; a list of the names of the officers o° the} General Government; the names of the officers of the City Government, Mayor, members of each board of the City Councils, judges of the Supreme Court, and circuit court, mrshal of the Distri ‘t, aud: distriet attorney; the last congressional directory; and the proceedings of the Continental Congress. ‘a Is wo More.—The unfortunate young man, Jas. Cuthbert, who lacerated his throat on Friday n ght, died on Saturday of his wounds, as was expected A large number of sorrowing friends attended his funeral yesterday afternoon. Blair says: “To run away that at the very worst, thinking to mend ourselves, From this world’s ills, Will soon blow oer, By boldly Scape 3 on a world unknown And plunging headiong in the dark—tis mad ! No frenzy haif so desperate as this.” Tue HicHLanpeRs—Contribution to the Monu- ment.—We learn that the commissions have been issued for this new company, and having their uni- forms, are making preparations for an early parade, @s soon as they can get their icuskets, and some bt essary arrangements can be made. Not be. 4 ready to parade on the 19th, they met on the even_ ing of that day, and passed a resolution unanimous ly for the officers to contribute five dollars each to the Washington Monument, and the men one dollar each. This will exceed the highest contribr tion made by any of the companies on the day of the grand p*:ade. THE .Prrou.—This building is anevery day sight, but few, however, know its history: The corner stone of the Capitel was laid by Gen. Waslungion, ‘Sept. 16, 1782. The origmal design was by br. Wm. Thornton, (an amateur archiiect.) modified by B. H. Latrobe, and finished by Bulfinch, Length of front, 352 feet 4 inches. Depth of wings 221 feet6 inches. East projection and steps, 65 West projection and Steps, 8 to top of balustrade, 70 fee*. dome, 145 feet Height above tidewater, 215 Kowundo 96 feet in diameter and 90 feet high. Library is con tructed enurely of iron, and is 92 tert long, 34 feet wide, and 36 feet high. e new wings, each 234 by 148 feet. Total length of building when finished, 740 feet. The wings will be joined to the eld building by covered pas.age ways. Important Mretine.—The meeting of the city Councils this evening will be of unusual import- ance, as the excitement in the city about the bread law, the hucksters’ act, andthe grocers’ and tippling house bills, will call for their immediate action, or Possibly re-action. It is to be hoped that our City Fathers will in some Way lull the rising storm. ‘The butter dealers, principal tavern keepers, and huck. sters have already presented their memorials, and this evening the petition of those who met at the Odd- Fellows’ Hali, is to g° in, and will probably be acted upon, as the object is ofa Pressing character. Not a potato could be had fo: Jove or money, except early in the evening, the huck sters having withdrawn from the marke: on account of the new huckster law. We learn that they have determined to stand out for their rights. The Hucksters were also absent from the West Market this morning, and are el z ing to the strike, - Seta See Uxqcest AT THE JaiL.—This inorning, Coroner Woodward held an inquest at the jail over the body of a colored prisonewhamed John Dement, whohad been committed in Decembet last for larceny, He was afflic ed with chronic diarrhea when he came to ‘ure prison, and the inquest found that he came to his death from that disease. This newly re- vised panorama, with an entirely new diorama and several new and superb scenes recently Sines, among which are the Fairy Grotto and the Temple of the Mermaids, with a grand concert by the Bos ton blind vocalist, Miss tlleri Sophia Emmons, is said to be even more attractive than wiien exhibited here formany weeks. to enthusiastic andoverwhelm ing crowds, some two years since.
