Tue Graxp Panave Yrerexpay—Contribution: fo the Monument —Continuing our notice of yes:er day of the grand parade, we mention the review of the President and Secretary of War, This took place on the Avenue, tn front of the Presideni’s louse, and was a military scene not to be forgotten. ‘The Commander-in-Chief appeared with the Secre- tary of War, accom fied by Jonah D. Hoover, Esq., United States Marshal, and performed hhis duty in @ most soldier-tike manner.- After a salate, wit the highest honors to the President and his eom- ny, the regiment marched to Union Square, riefly drilled by Col. Hickey, and by ori Lae their arms,and were dismissed tor a colat f Was prepated in‘ ample profusion of edibles, at Flint’s Hotel, where the various compa- nies partook of the feast with appetites abarpened by the morning's exercise. The ime again formed, the regiment, now com; of ten companies, preceed- ed to the National Washington Monument Grounds, and, aftera few evolutions, commenced their ar- rangement to contribute to the funds of the Monu- ment. THE CONTRIBUTIONS. . The first on the list was Col. Hickey, who, witha Putriotic liberality which does him high honor, sub- scribed and deposited $100. The companies not ‘contributing were the Washington Lightinfantry, the American Riflemen, and Scott Guards, who, Ww - ever, are to make thei deposits hereafter.” This daty over, the regiment re-formed and marched to the city, where they were dismissed, having honored the day with the grandest military parade ever wit- messed in Washington. ADDRESSES ON THE FLag PRESENTATION —The following are the beautiful and patriotic addresses delivered yesterday on presenting # American flag to the Scott Guards, by a lady whose name is signi 1- cant of good. I) presenting the National emblem, Mrs. E. H. Pendleton said: This national ensiz, the glorious emblem of our confedera ‘y, radiant with tue memory of the past, and reflecting a starry pathway on the future—this flag of freedom it is my pleasing office to present to the Scott Guard of Washington. I need not say to you, young gentlemen, that the duty you have imposed upon yourselves, is an hou- erable one, and that I feel confident that, at al! times. and under all circumstances, it will be henorably discharged. i ‘The well earned renown of have assumed, mot tail to be to you a spur to brave and how deeds; and should your country ever need your services, I am sure you will so bear yourselves that cach one of you will feel the im- portant trust that sturs the heart of every patriot. “ cur country’s welfare is eur first concern, And who promotes that best, best proves his duty.”” Let this sentiment be ever present in your minds, anc shape your every action in whatever situation you may be placed, and your deeds shall pluck the shining age trom vulgar time, and give them whale to late posterity. ‘To this, Captain Baker A. Carlisle, Esq., last night, rapped in white cotton, and from appearance having been born alive: The jury, with these tacts elicited, rendered a verdict that the infant came to his death by foul means by the hands of some person unknown for the purpose of concealment. ALanog Acpience.—The circus tent was crowded last night, and the performances such as to make the audience desirous of repeating their visit. . It is an excellent equestrian company, and therefore fully deserving of the public patronage. There is no “Barnum Humbug” here, but a rich display of gen- uine talent in the line, worthy of all praise. They perform at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and 7}¢ in the evening, thus affording accommodations for families bv daylight, and thé public at large at night. Schwartz receives a fresh supply daly, which he is prepared to furnish families on the wost pleasing terms. DaatH From Issury.—Andrew Lauxman, who re- cently had his hand crushed, by a threshing machine, at Mr. R. Butt’s establishment, near the second toll- gate on the plank road, died at the Infirmary, of lockjaw, and was buried on Wednesday by the German Benevolent Society, of which he was a member, Make tHe Corroration pay For rt.—Mr. Wm. C. Sullivan, who resides at the corner of Sixth and Eleventh streets, in going home last evening, fell into the sewer in Sixth street and broke his leg. He has a fair action for damages against the Corpora tion. Two or three verdicts for damages will cure the habit of leaving such places as man-traps after night fall. Watcu Hovsr.—Our city, for quiet and good order, will compare with that of any other in the Union. This is the third day, without our having had a single case to report. No stronger evidence can be given of the truth of the foregoing. Ratner Curtovs.—The Philadelphia Ledger remarks: ‘Some two or three hundred per- sons drowned by the sinking of « steamship sends a thrill of horror through a nation, and the lamentations are yet loud on account of the loss, Mere than twenty thousand human beings slaughtered in the Crimea causes all the bells in England and France to be set ringing for joy, and the organs in the churches peal forth strains of exultation over the “ glorious” result.
