EVENING STAR, LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. ‘L INTELLIGR Aw Evert Por “ [reus.°—This Mortting we found ® package on ur twble addressed “‘to the Local Editor,” with the inscription, “ From John D. Cal- lahan, of the firm of McSpeddon & Baker, U.S. Stationers,” and on opening it found, uot an “ir.fer- nal machine,’* bat a regular and complete outfit for ~“Ttems.” It consists of a ream of extra white-laid Congress letter puper, a ream of eXtra superfine eream-laid note pap r, “manufactured for the Queen,” a fot of excellent ens, ink, @ beautiful ink-stand, a dezen of the celebrated “ Lubin® pen- lot of Monier (London) envelopes, a stick of sealing WaX, @ neat seal,a rich four bladed knife by Rogers, sa. d box and paper of sand, paste-pot or jar of muci age, much seperior to paste or gum arabic, & pair cf scissors, a aap metalli¢ memorandum book, &c. Many of the articles are of the manufac- ture of Messts. McSpedden. Baker & Callaban, and are fine specimens of American science and art. In making our acknowledgments for this handsome present, we have only to say tha: we trust none of the articles—or infit, not outfit—may ever be used an any but a good cause, and that the enterprising firm may successfully continue to “wave.” Frioutrct Runaway axp Escape.—Yesterday afternoon, while returning from a funeral at Glen- weod Cemetery, and when near the slaughter-bouse on the turn coming from the Cemetery, two horses attached to a hack Containing tour ladies, beeame frightened and raw off, turning from the road to the left. In the efforts of the driver to rein them in, Learihere pr ee and the bridle of one of the Amunals got loose, rendering it impossible to curb him. The driver here threw himself towards their to seize them, but fell on his face on the ground, the furieus anunis going off at full speed, and making direct fora Precipice some thirty fect deep. The ladies screamed at their erous pre- dicament, and the fear ot going over the precipice, laren i and all, certain death or broken limbs staring them in the face, when suddenly the hack struck a fence, broke’ the tongue, snap- ped the traces, and the treed steeds ran back agam to the road, where they were subsequent caught. When the tongue broke, the hack was within about forty feet of the deep ravine to which the party seemed to be inevitably rushing, It wasa most providential escape, indeed, and one which the parties wil remember with shudde ing sensa- uony all their hves. The hackman was’ not much burt, we hear, though barely getting off from serious injuries, in his daring effort to save his fair but help. less passengers. Tey may well thank God for their Gateiy. — Extension or tae Nave Yanv.—If our memory serves us right, we think that Congress made an ap Propriation of some .225,000 for the extension of the ‘Navy Yard eastwardly, and if so, it may be asked, why has nothing been done? The lots weet of the Navy Yard should also be purchased, and added to the extension, both fur the beuefit ot the Yard, and also of the health of the workmen and neighbors, by removing @ filthy nuisance, which they create ‘These places oulit to be filed up, and there can be no better way of having the work done than by Con 86 securing them for the future purposes of the sovernment. The miosmea arising trom the sun pouring down its rays on decayed matter, when the tide is low, e=pecialiy uiminer, When a southern breeze is blowing, create: any diseases. Bilious fevers and agues are the essary results, All these could be avorded, and the Navy Yard improved by an outisy at present of a comparatively smail amount of money. PHILHARMONIC Soctery.—The rehearsals of this body of singers give evidence of a newly-awakened uiferest in their prosperity, and a deiernmination to overcome and destroy ail impediment in their onward march. Their meeting last evening was weil at- tended, and a marked » overnent was manifest. ‘The performances w and th given with much taste ion, U able direction of M conductor, and the beautiful and ¢ accompaniments of Prot Feertsch, who presided at the piano forte, assisted by Mr. Parkhur-t. Why donot the members give a concert? is 4 question often asked, and which we are unable to an-wer. A large number of our citi- zens are ar to bear their perforimaners, and we hope the society will graui y them. Verium cp. Youne Lapits’ Fai 1n Georgetowx.—The young ladies of Georgetown, with a view to aid in the Chinese Missions, are to commence an elegant Fair this afternoon, at Mrs. Wheei Seminary, corner of Prospect and Fayette streets. Ladies and gentlemen of Waslungton, and all triend= of these Jnissions to the bemghted Celrstials, should not for- get to give the ladies hoiding the Faia qill. As it is conducted by “young” ladies, no doubt beautiful, 400, we tink Wal some of our young gentlemen anight step over Rock Creek, and aid the fair ones in their benevolent efforts. Interesting as well ‘as important results nught grow out of the visit. Tue Ancet kad Monsy.—We learn that when taken to prison, the Angel Gabriel hid some $200, which the officers of that institution kept for him un- til his release, When it was returned to him, and he made off for the cars like an uncaged bird. On the way he was much plagued by a young man in| quor repeatedly calling on him, “Gabriel, blow your born!” Gabe at last turned the laugh om lim by rising and singing out, in clarion tones, Boy, blow your nose!" The “ boy”? got out at the first tavern and took a horn to consvlé himself, but did not re- gurn to the saine car again. i Bracrivvut Amentcan Marorz.—The Washing- ton correspondent of the Virginia Sentinel says: “Captain Meigs, the intelligent Superintendent of the Capitol extension, showed “me, a day or two since, numerous specimens of American marble, which be intended to use in the imterior of the new buildings. The specimens from Tennessee, I think, the prettiest. I also saw the drawings of the roofs, which will be of wrought and cast-irou. Workmen are now setting the iron head plates on which the root will rest, the brick walis having been carried to their proper height. When tbe additions are com- pl we will have a Capitol worthy of the greatest nation in the world.” Tue Navtoxan Mont Ment.—We have been in formed by the Secretary of the Board of Directors that the monumentis now one hundred and SiXLy-sia feet high, avd there is a probabitity that the hands wilk be able to raise it four tect higher before tbe season closes. We take the following desoription of the ill- fated Arctic from the New Yerk Herald of yesterday : The Arctic was the third built of the Collins line. She was constructed in 1850, by Mr. Wm H. Brown, at the foot of Twelfth street, East river, and had been always under the command of Capt. Luce. She was considered one of the staunchest vessels ever built. Her hull was encased with strong iron diagonal braces, in addition to all the other modern im- provements in chipbuilding that could be ap- plied to render her af strong as wood and iron could possivly make her. Her tonnage was 2856 %5-95th government measurement, or about 3.500 carpenters’ messurement—the measurement usually employed in speaking of avessel. Her dimensions were as follows : length, 285 feet; breadth of beam, 45 feet, (across the paddles 76;) depth of hold, 32 feet 114 inches’ Her dining saloon was 75 feet’ long, and 20 wide, and the withdrawing saloon 65 feet long by 40 wide; and by their rich and elegant style of furnishing excited the sur- prise and admiration of everybody. ‘The ma- chinery of the vessel was from the foundery of Mesers. Stillman, Allen & Co., and consisted of two side lever engines. of 1,000 horse power. Each cylinder was 95 inches in diameter. with a stroke of 10 feet. She cost, in building, $600,000, and was insured in England for £60.000 sterling, and in this country for $310,000, making a total of $600,000. She was provided with boats sufficient for five hundred persons. Her cargo was ligh:, prob- ably not more than half a average, as is usual at this season of the year, and was insured for $300,000 principally in Wall street. —————————— MARRIED.
