THE DAILY WORKER, NEW YORK, THURSDAY, fage Three ' Strike of 300, 000 German Textile Workers Laas as 5 Mill Owners Refuse Increase BOSSES DECLARE | CONTRACTS NULL ON NOVEMBER 30 Strike Strong and Growing BERLIN, October 31.—In order to bring pressure to bear upon the tex- tile workers unions in the Rhine- land, who refuse to continue the present wage scales, the Saxon tex- tile employers have decided to termi- nate all wage contracts on Novem- ber 30, thus practically assuring the walkout of 300,000 workers. The millowners demand that the present wage scale be continued, while the workers declare that the | wages they receive at present are not enough to live on and demand a wage increase. The government, called upon to mediate, had decided for a slight in- ,erease in wages which the Rhinish labor officials had accepted in the face of rank and file opposition, but which decision the millowners re- fuse to agree to. In view of the sentiment among the textile workers it is hardly probable that they will accept the continuation of the present wage scale. The move of the Saxon mill- owners is frankly to force the labor unions, both in Saxony and in the Rhineland to continue the present, wage scale or face a walkout in the whole textile industry. While before the labor officials | could mollify the workers by point- ing. to the government decision, now) due to the refusal of the millowners to accept that decision and their evident purpose of forcing a general strike, it is probable that a general walkout can hardly be prevented.
