b p i i] i i | i THE DAILY WORKER, NEW YORK, THURSDAY. OCTOBER 18, 1928 The Communist Party Asks for $10,000 For the Communist Election Campaign To Every Member of the Communist Party! _ To All Working Men and Working Women! _ The election campaign has reached its last stage. The capitalist terror against the working class candidates, against the Communist Party, is becoming ever more brutal and ruthless. Big business is spending millions publicly and tens of millions un- der cover to finance both of its political parties. Even the Socialist Party, the party of small business, is receiving its crumbs from the table of the rich. Thirty-five million copies of the boss press are vomiting each and every day their capitalist poison, their anti-Communist bias. Even the Socialist Party and its preacher candidate receive their daily morsels of “respectable publicity.” The election campaign of the Communist Party serves only ‘one goal: the mobilization of the masses of workers against the master class. The aim of the Communist candidates is not to grab offices but to spread the propaganda of the class struggle, to expose the cele- brated American capitalist democracy in all its ugly nakedness as a capitalist dictatorship. The Communist Party is already on the ballot in 34 states. Our speakers and organizers have penetrated such new sections of the working class as had never before heard the teachings of Commun- ism. The election campaign of our Party, the propaganda of our candidates is penetrating the “Solid South.” The Negroes, the most oppressed section of the American masses, are beginning to see the Communist Party as their fearless champion, as their spokesman against white oppression. During the whole course of the election campaign the major capitalist parties, and likewise their small brother, the Socialist Party, have faithfully kept the “gentleman’s agreement” to maintain a deadly silence on the Negro question. The election cam- paign of the Communist Party in the South violated this aristocratic “gentleman’s agreement” in the most plebian, most revolutionary way. For the first time since the Civil War there now appears in the South a political party which declares its struggle for the liberation of the Negroes. The election campaign of the Communist Party is first of alla relentless struggle against imperialist war. The agencies of the rul- ing class. as also the American Federation of Labor, are making in- creasingly active propaganda for the imperialist war. The socialist party is a partner to the capitalist war conspiracy. Only the Com- munist Party is fighting imperislist war; only we are trying to spread anti-militarist propaganda among the military forces. Our anti-war literature is being distributed in scores of thousands of copies throughout the whole country. For the first time ir the oistory of this country there appears a really revo- lutionary party uf the working class, a party which conducts its election campaign not for parliamentary gains but for revolutionary aims. The growing wave of capitalist terror against the Communist Party is nothing but the receivt for our uncompromising revolution- ary election campaign. In 1919-20 the post-war terror against the Communists was a sign of our weakness. In 1928 the increasing terror against us is mptom of our growing strength. The state apparatus is trying to force our Party off the ballot. In several states we are still engaged in a struggle to put the Ham- mer and Sickle on the election ticket. The Communist campaign meeixzs are broken up everywhere. Our candidates, speakers and are going to jail by scores. Leading Communists are being jailed in the southern states, because they appear as the cham- pions of the Negro peonle. Communist rank-and-filers are dragged before courts, because they are the most courageous leaders in every strike, on every picket-linc. Members of our Party and of our: brave Young Workers (Communist) League sre being imprisoned, beaten up, tortured in jail for the distribution of anti-militarist, anti-war leaflets. Communist Party headquarters are being raided, Com- munist Party organizers are being arrested, because our Party is the only party of proletarian class struggle in this country. The socialist party enjoys the complete protection of capitalist law. Not a single meeting of the socialist party has been raided, not a single speaker or organizer of the socialist party has been jailed throughout the whole election campaign. The master class is not afraid of the socialist party. Rather it gives a helping hand to its willing errand- boy, and is not stingy with occasional little trips for prompt and efficient servic ‘ Comrades, workers! We are in the midst of a big struggle. We must now inerease our activities ten-fold, hundred-fold. Our great- est weakness is lack of funds.
