Page Four BOSSES’ LIE FAILS TO FOOL FOOD WORKERS Greek Workers Stay By Organizer. The Greek restaurant bosses who got so scared of the Amalgamated Food Workers’: Union that they se- cured injunction “protection” for 170 places when a strike was hinted, have another ally in some of the Greek Coffee House keepers, accord- ing to the experienct of Athan Dan- iels, Greek organizer for the union. Boss Fights For Boss. Daniels went into the Greek coffee house of Tom Sookas, 4551 Clinton avenue, where the Greek restaurant workers are accustomed to gather. Sookas had previously sympathized with the Greek workers because of the long hours they were required to work. Sookas solicited the trade of these Greek restaurant cooks and waiters. When Daniels went in, Sookas re- fused to serve him. Sookas began to tell the other workers that Daniels was no Greek. He said that the union organizer was Bulgarian because he had given the DAILY WORKER state- ments that were not a credit to a Greek. Sookas tried to make the workers believe that Daniels would not be so “unpatriotic” against the Greek bosses. Workers Won't Patronize. The Greek food workers, most of them members of the Amalgamated Food Workers’ union, told the coffee house boss to serve Daniels. Sookas refused again and took Daniels by the arm and shoved him out of the door, The rest of the workers who were giving their trade to Sookas, de- parted at’ once, leaving his place empty. The Greek food workers of the un- ion selected Daniels for their organ- izer and the union approved. The Greeks chose Daniels as a member of their own people and a keen, de- termined fighter in their behalf. The Greek food workers know better than to believe the stories told by coffee house bosses like Sookas and will soon show such men by staying away from their places that such cheap, false talk is not wanted. WASHINGTON, D. C., June 3.—The government oil and booze muck has begun to besmirch even Henry Cabot Lodge, scion of the Mayflower aristoc- racy in the senate. Evidence fur- nished by Gaston B. Means, under cross-examination by Attorney Paul Howland, indicates that Lodge was in- volved in the run running plots on which the seizure of the British trawl- er Gemma, caught with a whisky car- |go off the Atlantic coast, is throwing new light. Testifying before the Brookhart committee, Means said that Senator Lodge had asked that permits for | whisky withdrawals be given to one of |his constituents. This legitimate per- mit was later used illegally, and traced to this vessel. Secretary of the Treasury Mellon is the chief object of Means’ attack Mellon is to go on the witness stand next week. The bitterness which Means feels for Mellon is said to be not due tc any desire on Means’ part to witness a general clean-up of the officials whe had a hand in the mess, but to the fact that Means holds Mellon, himself a notorious bootlegger, responsible for his having to go to trial on a charge of bootlegging and attempted bribery, and for his dismissal from the department of justice, where he was a colleague of Daugherty. Argue About Toothache. Means’ toothaches are coming in for 8 lot of publicity in the senate. As- sistant Attorney General Todd thinks that a toothache wasn’t enough te keep Means away. from his trial at the time he pleaded that he was too sick to appear. Todd sees in this a deep-seated plot on the part of Means to delay trial. He says that the pull- ing of one tooth is not a serious oper- ation. Senator Wheeler, more given to fine distinctions, asserts that un- der certain conditions the pulling of a single tooth is a very serious matter. Anyway, Wheeler says, Means had three teeth pulled altogether. Todd doesn’t think that that alters the case. Send in that Subscription Today! Smith, St. St. Local Russian ee Turns Front Towards Counter Revolution Under the disguise of a “Soviet Russia free of Communist dictator- ship” the local Russian daily, Russky Vestnik, which changed ifs name from Free Russia, launched an attack against the Communist Party of Rus- sia and the Soviet government. In articles published lately, the pa- per accuses the Soviet government of “working for the wellare of the world forgetting at the same time the wel- fare of our country.” The old worn- out lies spread by the counter revo- lutionary agents and the “respectable governments” about the famous Bol- shevik gold, are being repeated in this sheet. While reprinting from the Moscow Izvestia the report of the American delegation of the Young Workers’ League to the Y. C. Weeks Disinfects School Against Pacifist Germ FORTRESS MONROE, Va., May 3.—Military goose-steppers assem- bled here today in celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Coast Artillery school, received an official pat on their uniformed backs from Secretary of War Weeks, who sent a message warning them against infec- tion by such heresies as pacifism. That certain Americans are not so sure of the purity of American mo- tives as they were during the war hysteria seems to have penetrated Weeks’ mind. “Thé rising sentiment for pacifism in the country is due to the confusion of thought resulting from the world war,” he said. “The reaction of many minds has taken form in expressions of favor of uni- versal peace. We must be watchful that national security is not thrsat- ened.” Urging members of the school staff not to rest their military efforts, Weeks went on, “Standing armies, like the police,of great cities, must be retained. I am skeptical regarding the settlement of international difi- culties by any other methods than force.” * . WASHINGTON, June 3.—Coolidge’s effort to deliver Muscle Shoals to Henry Ford is linked with the billion- aire’ support of Coolidge as a candi- date for the presidency in the report of the senate agricultural committee, |just made public. The report is draft- ed by Senator.Norris of Nebraska, Telling of Ford’s anger at the sale }of the Gorgas steam plant to the Ala- bama Power company for $3,472,482, Senator Norris goes on to relate how this anger was turned to “love and ad- miration.” Bribe to Ford. “To appease his anger,” says the report, “a vacillating administration publicly announced that the amount received for the Gorgas plant would be credited upon the $5,000,000 which Mr. Ford agreed to pay for Muscle Shoals in case his bid was accepted by congress. “This kindly favor, perhaps super- induced by other considerations, so pleased Mr. Ford that his anger at the administration was not only turned into love and admiration) but he became so violently friendly that he himself withdrew as’a candidate for president and announced his sup- port of the executive who had made such a liberal concession.’ The report shows the danger ,of Ford still getting this magnificent pub- lic resource for a song and urges the need of government control of the nat- ural power reserves, “D. Of J.”” Appeals To Supreme Court For Rich Cash Customer WASHINGTON; D. C., June 3.— Leave to file a petition demanding the release of Phillip Grossman from the Chicago Bridewell where he was sent when a Chicago Federal Judge held that a presidential pardon could not apply to contempt cases was filed to- day before the Supreme Court. Gross- man was a rich bootlegger who it was alleged before a Senate committee used “influence” to get a pardon from Coolidge. The charges of “influence” were leveled at the Department of Justice which prepared the recommendation for Grossman’s pardon. The D. of J. is appealing the decision of the Feder- al Judges to the Supreme Court. The Grossman case attracted atten- tion when the judges refused to re- cognize a presidential pardon as be- ing of greater authority than a judges’ contempt sentence. France And England Fight For Reported Death-Dealing Ray LONDON, June 3.—Behind doors that were barred and locked and heavily guarded, a death dealing ray invented by Grindell Mathews, was tested, in the presence of air ministry officials today. The death ray, claimed as a terrible weapon of destruction in case of war, was then offered to the British govern- ment in exchange for financial support of the inventor. A representative of the air ministry went at once to report to the cabinet concerning the success of the demon- stration. If the government does not support Mathews, he will go into part- nership with a Frenchman at Lyons and the invention will pass into con- trol of France. Res. 1682 S. FLAG-DRAGGER; BUT HE GOES FREE NEW YORK, June 3.—Disrespect for the American flag on Decoration day brought Caril S. Chace a black eye, a bloody nose, a bruised jaw, and a jail sentence. Disrespect for the rights of Chace as an ordinary human being brought Charles Walti, former marine, who administered the beating, only an approving nod from the court. An American flag flying from one of the windows of the Palmero apartment house, which he owns, didn’t rouse Chace to the same pitch of patriotic fervor that thrilled thru Walti, who was acting as janitor in the apartment house. Since Chace is a member of a Boston family and a wealthy real estate dealer, it was hard for any one to believe that the red, white and blue dollar pro- tector didn’t rouse his heartfelt ad- miration. So he told it to the ma- rine, Walti. Walti took the mat- ter with proverbial seriousness, and beat Chace up. Chace was found guilty in night court and his finger-prints were taken. More Christians Wail About War; Forget The Causes GRAND .RAPIDS,_ Mich., June 3.— ‘The Presbytarians in convention here have followed the same cautious stick- ing-out-of-the-tongue at war that the Methodists and other Prince of Peace devotees have taken. They suggest that more conferences be called to resolve on the horrors of war; that all Christiandom co- operate to complete some sort of machinery for peace that shall insure that the beacon light of reason guide the scrapping nations. They favor United States -participation in the World Court but reserve the right to declare war after arbitration of dis- putes. The kindly Christians also make the preposterous claim that “those who are asked to fight and bear the burdens imposed by war should be consulted when possible before this sacrifice is required of them.” - No hint of pacificists? But the Presbyterians, like the rest of the peaceful warriors of Jesus, quite ignore the causes. of war, which are rooted in the vicious capitalist profit system. Wednesday, June 4, 1924 WEEKS RENEWS ATTEMPT TO GET | PAXTON HIBBEN Pro-Soviet Major Calls for Hidden Evidence (By The Federated Press) NOW YORK, June 3.—After ap parently dropping its attempt to vie timize Captain Paxton Hibben, re serve officers’ corps, United States army, the war department has ordered that a’new board of officers be con- stituted to try Hibben’s case. The joker is that certain important papers relating to questionable activities of the military intelligence division of the war department cannot be exam- ined by Hibben. The department rules that examination of such rec- ords by Hibben’s counsel or the board “would prove prejudicial to the gov- ernment and against the public inter- est.” fi : Secretary of War Weeks ordered the investigation last. July after Hib- ben had been recommended for pro- motion as major. Hibben was charged with “holding beliefs favorable to ene- mies of the United States govern- ment.” He has been active in Rus- sian relief and believes in Russian recognition. ‘When Hibben and his counsel exam~- ined the papers in the case they found that 41 documents had been removed from the office by the war depart- ment. The department now proposes to try Hibben by eliminating from the evidence these documents which are damning to itseif. Addressing the adjutant general of the army, Hibben charges that the proposed board of officers, under the proposed limitations, is not the proper instrument and demands a court of in- quiry as provided by law and with all its powers and safeguards granted by law. He is unwilling for the war de- partment to evade a thoro investiga- tion which will show up its underhand- ed frameup methods and demands vit- dication of his character and conduct and retention as an officer by a court of inquiry. Wall Street Press Agent Talks Loosely of Monopoly Cancer ATLANTIC CITY, June 3.—The craziest idea in the world is that of individual monopoly,” said C. W. Bar- ron, publisher of the Wall Street Journal, in an address to the Tan- ner’s Council of America. He likened a monopolist to a cancer which he de- fined as an individual cell out of bounds fighting “for its individuality, forgetful of its neighbor and the unity of the system in which it dwells.” It kills 5 per cent of our people and 10 per cent over 40 years of age. Barron referred to his relation to the Har vard medical school cancer research department, but did not suggest: simi- lar activity to eliminate the human cancers with whom he associates. rey TN Write tor Free Sye Book.
