Maybe they didn’t intend to put such a hook on the thing, but it look- cd to me like a.curve, low and inside, and I think some of the people who have been going to bat for Alaska statehood are going to see it that way. The convention unanimously ad- opted a resolution calling for forest lands within present National For< ests in Alaska to be turned over to the State of Alaska. In other words, they asked that National Forests be abolished in Al- aska when Alaska becomes a state. It Isn't Likely that Senator Cli ton P. Stump of Ketchi- | kan, a- delegate to the convention and a member of the Alaska Devel opment Board, remarked that no! criticism of the Forest Service was intended. * But, said Mr. Stump, only by get- ting the forests under the control of the new State of Alaska can the pecple of Alaska benefit from them., That statement seems open to question, The statehood bills now before Congress provide that Alaska shall receive 37'. percent of the revenues derived from the National Forests in Alaska. Forty-four of the 48 states have National Forests. Some of them have greater areas in National Forests than does Alaska, and most of them receive only 25 percent of the reven- ues from those. forests. It Appears Certain that if the for- est resolution was not actually ord- ered up by Governor Gruening, it was concocted by those close enough ,to him that it amounts to the same thing. Dr. Gruening has been taking pot shots at the Forest Service for | some time and when he has not jactually pulled the trigger himself he has persuaded a: couple of his captive newspapers to do it for him. Partly this shooting seems to be personal ire. It may also be one of {the battles in the internecine war-4 Nugget. Reward. | fare that has long been carried on Letween the Interior and Agricul- i ture Departments, Now that the governor has drawn | the Democratic Party, or at least a portion of it, into the fray, there |is no telling where it will end. { One thing is quite clear. The re- solution adopted at Sitka repre- sents a complete reversal of Demo- | cratic administration policy regard- | ing National Forests. | In the past 18 years, this adminis- | tration has added some seventeen million acres to the National Forests of the nation and, so far as the re- cords show, has not subtracted any sizeable acreage from those forests. (Chuck) Taylor, isn't junking his philosophy of winning games. Thirty-one-year-old Taylor, who confounded the nation’s coaches by actually predicting victory week by week for his Indians, feels much the same way about Stanford's encounter with Illinois in the Rose Bowl. Taylor, speaking before the Foot- Lall Writers Association of south- ern California, didn't make a flat prophecy of triumph. _But he put it this way Wednesday: “We've never gone into a game believing we couldn’t win.
