L. R. Hogins, Juneau | , "Gun (razy,’ Crime i \Drama, Opens Today At Capifol Theatre | A wild orgy of crime, depicted | against the background of bullet- | spattered highways, is perpetrated | by Peggy Cummins and John Dall | as the stars of the United Artists drama, “Gun Crazy,” which opens an engagement at the Capitol The- | atre today. The picture is said to be i exceptional in its suspense and m} the violence of its action. i ‘The film, produced by Frank and | Maurice King, is based on MacKin- | lay Kantor’s Saturday Evening Pest | story of the same name, and the | screenplay was written by Kantor | and Millard Kaufman. | Early sequences of the picture | show Dall as a young boy, innocently | obsessed by firearms and already an expert shot, but destined to spend | a term in a reform school for steal- ing a revolver. Later, as a young man just out of the army, he meets | and marries Miss Cummins, the Annie Laurie Starr of the story, a ruthless carnival sharpshooter who | immediately " leads him into a life | of crime. A series of holdups by the poir follow each other in rapid succes- sion, but Dall's horror at the turn of events is overcome by his mutual infatuation for the girl. The situa- tion is complicated by the fact that Laurie is a brazen killer, while Dall shrinks from taking the life of even a wild animal Eventually the boldness of the criminal couple brings about a sav- | age pursuit by officers of the’ law, with two of Dall's boyhood chums | forced by circumstances to conduct the final stages of the chase. “Gun Crazy” was directed for King Bros. by Joseph H. Lewis, and the cast supporting the stars in- cludes Berry Kroeger as a drunken carnival owner; Morris Carnovsky | as a judge; Anabel Shaw as Dali’s | sister; and Harry Lewis and Ned- | rick Young as his boyhood chums. The production was designed by | Gordon Wiles, and the musical score | (was provided by Victor Young. Troepship Runs ‘Aground; None Hurt | WELLINGTON, N. Z. Mrs. Shanks, her daughter Bar- bara and a Fairbanks friend, Mrs. Alta Delling, drove down the high- way from Fairbanks, arriving here Monday, Aug. 13 and at Mile 13 out of Juneau had a minor car acci- dent. Monday was also Barbara’s birthday. A taxi stopped on the road ahead lof her, Mrs. Shanks said, and in going around it she met a car com- ing from the opposite direction. The Shanks car ran into the other, driven by Roland Gilmer of Juneau, but no serious damage was done. John Monagle of the Highway Pat- rol, said no charges would be filed by his office. The Shanks family is moving to Southeastern Alaska from Fairbanks where Shanks has been engaged in carpentering. He is also a well known Interior bush pilot. He will join his family here in about a month. Mrs. Shanks said they are moving to Gull Cove, on the northern tip of Chicagof Island, where they are establishing a hunting and fishing lodge. The property formerly be- onged to Shanks’ parents. The main lodge is near completion and there are two cabins available for guests. They expect to add more in the future. Besides Barbara, other members of the family which accompanied Mrs. Shanks from Fairbanks were Pinker, their cocker spaniel, and Jughead, the calico cat. The family, with Mrs. Delling, will leave tomorrow on the mailboat for Gull Cove where Mrs. Delling will be a guest for several days. On | as | the day of the big trotting race of the year, he consents to sit behind Evelyn Venable's horse, an animal which he had used to outwit her in a horse trade. The temperamental animal will only run fast when a certain song is played. How Davia Harum handles the horse and wins the race provides one of the greatest comedy scenes in which the noted cowboy-philosopher ever appeared on the een. In this race sequence Rogers drove | the temperamental trotter like a veteran. Old-time horsemen, whose horses were leased for the race, de- clared that Rogers was almosi a | counterpart of Ed (Pop) Geers, out- | standing Grand Circuit driver for| many years.
