TAKU ROAD REPORT GIVEN BY McKINLEY AT CHAMBER TODAY Jerry McKinley, chairman of the roads committee, gave a prelimin- ary report at a regular Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Baranof Hotel Thu y. He said that fur- ther investigations were underway and a full report would be pre- sented next week. McKinley pointed out the neces- sity for pushing the proposed Taku road now, saying that the Consoli- dated Mining and Smelting Co. in- tends to build a road to the border from Tulsequah and will request permission to continue it to tide- water through Alaska Territory, and build their own town and docks. This, McKinley pointed out would be by-passing Juneau. Reasons advanced for the build- of the road from Juneau through to Atlin were: (1) it would serve the Tulsequah mines; (2) promote tourist business here; (3) stimulate the uuckm;,- industry; (4) give a local outlet to the highway system to the states; (5) encourage the opening of the Taku country for mining and fishing; (6) be of val- ue in case an evacuation were nec- ; government agencies invclved ze winner | and 8] John Floberg, Dutch Allerdu-o.: THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE—JUNEAU, ALASKA (h)"l' stated that only 5.7 miles of new road construction had taken |place in this area guring the past {20 years and wanted to know why recent appropriations weren't to be used for new road building. ! Alva Blackerby rose to explain |that when = appropriations were made by Congress they were ear- |marked for certain work and the had {no choice but to follow orders. | Secretary Fred Eastaugh reported |that a small chosen group of Jun- j |eau and Douglas businessmen would {meet with Briz. Gen. O. E. Walsh ‘n: the U. S. Engineers office from |Portland when he arrives here the latter part of the month to dis- |cuss the improvements to the Jun- leau and Douglas small boat har- bors. Bill Ellis asked that the appropri- ate Chamber committee consider a Inew ily exterminating agent that is supposed to kill off flies withia a quarter-mile radius for one sea- son with a $5.25 unit. The matter | was referred to Tom Dyer's com- | mittee. Richard Peter rose to question |the value of the half-day closing |kefore the Fourth of July when so many people came to Juneau to celebrate and shop. This is to be |taken up by the executive board. The report was made by Dr. N. |A. She said she is well enough to valk about the house, and even hort distances outside. Few people have been revived when the heart has been stopped as long as Mrs. Keith's, the hos- pital said. “Ndt only had her heart stopped,” Dr. Wilhelm's report said, “but it ad gone into what is called ‘ven- ricular * fibrillation,” a final dying form of quivering commonly con- sidered fatal.” Yet the 37-year-old California woman, mother of two children, lw. strong enough to leave the hos- pital 12 days after the operaticn and make the long trip across the Mrs. Keith to- | | continent. The heart stopping occurred when Mrs. Keith, suffering from rheumatic heart disease, was oper- ated on May 26 to correct a severe obsuucuon of me mitral valve.
