Keithahn, curator of the lrumzox rial Museum, received an album and interesting letter Wed- !hesday from J. M. Douglas, curator )f Perth Museum at Perth, Ontar- io, Canada. He stated that the album had been given him, among other hings, from the collection of the: late Dr. James K. Simpson, who was an early day physician and surgeon in Juneau. The late doc- tor’s library was presented to the Perth Museum by the doctor's sis- ter who found the collections at the old Simpson homestead near arleton Place, 22 miles from Perth. In the album are 88 picwures, most of them 7'%x9%, of Douglas and Juneau in the early 1900's. They| were taken by Case and Draper— Case being the father of Mrs. Hugh Wade who was in the photography business here. Several of the pictures of Jun- eau show buildings which are still standing today. Douglas is a met-! ropolis with its extensive Tread- well and Mexican Mining Co. build- Wrapped around the album were two newspapers, The Douglas Is- land News and the Alaska Daily Record, each for the year 1910. and publisher of the Douglas paper and A. R. O'Brien of the Alaska Daily News which was published in Ju- neau, first as a weekly in 1901 and later changed to a daily. It ceased puklication in 1911. The survey showed that prices of goods and services, including rent, were 40 per cent higher in Anchorage and 47 per cent higher in Fairbanks than in Seattle in February 1951. Housing excluded, the differences were about 29 per cent and 36 per cent higher, re- spectively. These comparisons were the first made by the bureau since March 1945. Price differentials had nar- rowed materially by 1951 on food and apparel, but remained about the same for miscellaneous goods and services. Rents, on the other han. were proportionately much higher in Alaska cities in 1951 than in 1945. Food costs, which acconnt for about one-third of a family’s total budget, were 37 per cent higher in Anchorage and 47 per cent higher in Fairbanks than in Seat- tle in February 1951. Apparel 19 per cent higher in Anchorage and 25 per cent higher in Fairbanks; miscellaneous goods and services were 25 and 30 per cent higher.
