PERJURY IS THREAT T0 COSTELLO NEW YORK, March 14 — ® — Threatened with perjury if he didn't answer, Gambler Frank Costello to- day told Senate crime probers he has about $40,000 to $50,000 in his strongbox at home. Sen. Herbert R. O'Conor (D-Md) who issued the ultimatum, told the reputed underworld Jeader. to ‘“be extremely ¢areful’” in answering the question. When Costello hesitated, Sen Charles Tobey (R-NH) interrupted to suggest that a policeman be sent to Costello’s home “to open that box.” “We've played ducks and drakes long enough with this,” Tobey snapped. Costello said he also has about $90,000 to $100,000 in two bank ac- counts, but that he isn't sure. “T haven’t had a chance to look,” he said. After the three-hour mprning, session, Costello, his voice croaky with laryngitis, was excused to re- turn for a third round eof question- ing tomorrow, Committee Counsel Rudolph Hal- ley listed these subjects as still to be covered with the ex-bootlegger ind gambler: 1. A summary of his legitimate ind illegitimate businesses. 2. A summary of his net assets. 3. His criminal friends and asso- ciates. : 4. The entire subject of his po- litical activities. Costello, whom witnesses have pictured as a behind-the-scenes po- litical dictator in New York City, balked at telling his net wealth. For ‘hat he drew a threat of a contempt citation.
