GUARD GROUP 'RETURNS FROM TRIP Members of the Alaska National {Guard have returned from a trip to Nome, Anchorage, Fairbanks and Point Barrow in conjunction with the territory’s civil defense activi- | ties and a National Guard field in- | spection trip. Those making the trip were Col. Joseph D. Alexander, Warrant Officer Harry I. Lucas, M/Sgt. William Crawford and Sgt. Charles Duckworth. They aided the Alaskan Scouts in getting a proper start. The new Nome armory, a 40 by 100 foot| quonset hut, was inspected on the trip. An officers’ board was held at Pt. Barrow for those requesting field commissions and those ap- pearing before the board were re-| commended for federal recognition in the National Guard. Those appearing before the board were 1st Lt. Lloyd Alivakana and 2nd Lts. Jonah Bolt, Eben Hopson, Robert Blodgett, Harold Kaveolook and Eddie Hopson of Co. C, 1st Scout Battalion of Pt. Barrow. Ap- pearing before the board from Co. A, 1st Scout Battalion at Nome, was 2nd Lt. Wayne Ulferts. The training program was out- lined in great detail and the in- structors’ section of the team con- ducted several evenings of instruc- tions to set the proper pattern. The U. S. Naval officers on duty at Pt. Barrow gave extra cooperation in assisting in every way possible by making a number of critically needed materials available for the operations of the new armory there, said Col. Alexander. A meeting was held at Pt. Barrow with the council and civil defense unit to start planning a blackout in the near future in cooperation with the practice alert scheduled by the Navy. Civil defense con- ferences were held also in Nome, Fairbanks and Anchorage. The return trip from Pt. Barrow to Fairbanks was made in a new C-119 now called the flying box- car. Col.
