Bates, Alaska Road Commission safety engineer, Bates attended the October 16- 20 conterence in a dual capacity— for the ARC and, personally, as a representative of the Southeast Al. aska Federal Field Safety Council, originally the Juneau Council. He made a report on the Con- gress to the Council board at the ‘meeting yesterday afternoon. The entire group, of which Milton J. Furness is president, will discuss recommendations at the general meeting here next Friday. Having to choose from among the many simultaneous programs at the Congress, Bates attended those of direet interest to Alaska. He was especially interested in ses- sions ‘on “The Responsibilities of the Safety Engineer,” “How to Maintain Interest in Accident Pre. vention,” and “Traffic Safety.” Among other outstanding papers and discussions were those dealing with safety in' construction, public speaking and activities of the Fed- eral Interdepartmental Safety Council, as well as the annual meeting of the American Society of Safety Engineers. FOWLER COMPLETES MINES INSPECTIONS Howard Fowler, engineer with the Territorial Department of Mines has returned to the Juneau headquarters office after two and one half months inspection of mining properties in the soutuhern division. He will re- main in' the local office through the winter months to compile field notes and make up reports. NONDALTON WELFARE FUND KEPT IN FORCE BY VOLUNTARY GIFTS In a report to the welfare divis- ion of the Alaska Native Service, Mrs. Cledia F. Jones states that the revolving fund at the village of Nondalton has but one welfare case 80 far this year. The fund, estab- lished through the efforts of Mrs. Janes, is kept in force by contribu- tiens of the fishermen in the vil- lage. The fund is the only one iike it under the jurisdiction of the ANS. At the end of each fishing sea- son, contributions to the fund are made on the basis of each fisher- mah’s earnings. Any loans made during the course of the year are repaid at the end of the fishing season. A hot lunch program for the school is participated in by the women of the village by their preparation of the lunches.
