Alter, director of the di- vision of sanitation and engineering for the Alaska Department of Health, has accepted a fellowship to make studies in several Scandi- navian countries. The fellowship was offered by the World Health Organization of the United Nations, which will pay his basic expenses. Alter is leaving Tuesday for Wash- ington, D.C., where he is scheduled to participate in a meeting of the National Research Council next week. From there he will go to New York, to The Hague, Netherlands, to join Herbert Bosch, chief of the environmental sanitation section of the WHO, At The Hague he will attend a seminar on environmental health sponsored by the Royal In- stitute of Engineers. ¥ The object of his trip will be fo make studies of public health prae- tices in Norway, Sweden, lmin;.g* sibly Finland and Greenland, and to exchange views with the pul health officers of those countries. “No doubt many of our engineering problems are similar and an ex- change of views will benefit us all,” Alter said today. “We have carried on an exchange of correspondence with officials in these countries and it will be interesting to meet them.” Alter was awarded a civil engi- neering degree from Purdue Univer- sity last year for his thesis, “Arctic Sanitary Engineering.” He expects to be gone until Janu- ary.
