L. Andersoon, direc- tor of the Alaska Department of Fisheries, stated to a group of Juneau businessmen. “In 1948 fish landings at Juneau were approximately 6,000,000 pounds of halibut, salmon and blackcod. That is about 3,000 tons of freight or 150 refrigerated truck loads,” he said. “With a highway connection that amount of business could be doubled or tripled. Already a cold st e plant is here and frozen fish could be loaded in Juneau for delivery directly to Eastern markets. Freight costs, handling costs, could be reduced and temperature fluctu- ations could be eliminated.” “The Juneau area has two can- neries, the one in Douglas and the Ancher Fish Co. floater, here. All possible these plants to cperate. This pa. year exploratory work was done on shrimp in this area and it proved teasible. should be made regarding dungen- |t fighting near the Chinese fron- | 31F856 25-7, ess crab around here. Juneau came very closs to getting a crab can- nery last spring. “I believe that a small smoXery comtined with a luxury pack oper- ation of pickled and spice fish could be successful here. It is surprising the amount of business that could be obtained from sports- men who like to have their catches smoked and canned for gifts asiPresident Truman will address the COMMERCIAL property store and well as for personal use.” Anderson pointed out abalone is| a potential on the west coast, that oyster beds could be seeded, al- though the growth is slower in thess waters. Scmething also could be done on scallops and bottom fish to supply local and Alaskan trade at least. “Most of the fishery products used in Alaska are shipped in, except scme salmon, halibut, crab and shrimp. Packaged frozen fish is shipped from Washingten and eastern points. Lobsters come from Mexico, South Africa and Australia; scalleps from the east coast and Japan; abalone from Mexico; oysters from Washington; sole from the east and Washington; salt cod from the Atlantic; salt herring from Iceland; mackerel from Norway; tuna from the Pac- siderable time with the Chrysler| PTANO—_Uprighi—excellent condi- ific coast; sardines from Norway, California, the east coast and Por- tugal ‘The high cost of production- is discouraging for Alaskan operator: but elimination of freight cost from Seattle could help to compén- sate for local consumpticn markets. “Certainly everything should be done by Juneau to encourage the location of fish processing plants here,” Anderson concluded.
