PAGE SIX AMERICAN FURS GAIN MANY MILLIONS IN VALUE Prices Higher for All Furs Since Russian furs have been almost barred from our country, the advance in prices this coming season will mean many millions of dollars to the trapper, who is entitled to the biggest share, and the entire fur industry. Muskrat showed the first advance of fully 50%, Mink even gained over the high prices of last year and all other short-haired furs are sure to follow! Even White Fox, Red Fox, and Lynx, unsalable the past few years, are gaining in value and our sales in the last month on American Fox and Coyote run into tens of thousands of skins at Higher Prices. We look for an even better demand with resultant higher prices this coming season. Don't sell your furs at give-away prices. We'll be pleased to keep you posted on the latest market trends and our free market reports will be ‘Sitka Residents 'Invite Juneauites |For Alaska Day | Through a letter to the Juneau Chamber of Commerce, Sitka has invited residents of Juneau to par- ticipate in an Alaska Day festival | there October 18. On October 10th you are going to elect for this business a Board of Directors, representing you, who will make de- cisions on matters of vital concern 1o all the people of Alaska. This is-a business report, presented to help you make a wise choice of candidates. A report of the Territorial Treasurer shows that in the 15-month period from the beginning of the present biennium through June 30, 1950, results have been as follows: Receipts Dishursements - $17,160.030.43 15,643 574.75 Not a bad showing, is it? The report shows further that the Territory on June 30 had cash in the bank total- ing $3,668,062.05. This is the “"bankruptcy” about which the Republican smear artists have been shouting. The Republicans want to scuttle the basic tax program enacted by the Democratiic 1949 Legislature and go back to chaos. Oh yes, they have a new*wrinkle t00, a gross sales fax on everything you buy. In fact, the slush fund for the Republican smear campaign comes in large part from absentee interests which would benefit from such a “reform”” From their stand- point it's a good investment. From yours, it's poison. TERRITORIAL INCOME LIQUOR EXCISEiTAX 14.03% MOTOR FUIL TAX 9.01% TAX This chart shows how the basic tax system, EN- ACTED by a DEMOCAT- IC LEGISLATURE, has opgrated months Jun e 30. in the 15 up to T he percentage fig- uresindicatethe relative importance of each tax source dur- ing this biennium. It’s easy to see who pays what. Where without net income tax, the would we be today the moderate When basic tax system has had a chance to clear thrown in its way the hurdles in the courts and to become fully opera- tive, the benefits of this program ENACTED by a DEMOCRATIC legislature will be apparent to Al- askans. _ Let's compare the present condition of solvency and sound, conservative financing with the situation which resulted from actions of the Republican-controlled 1947 Legislature. That session left us with almost two million dollars worth of unpaid bills, which were piled up in the Auditor’s office because the 1947 Legislature failed to pro- vide revenues fo meet expenses. Our new basic fax system has not only met the costs of government during this hiennium but has actually paid off the debts left to us by the Republicans of 1947. The Territory is now on a cash basis and all bills are paid as they are presented. Thanks 1o the Democrats, we are now back in business. Don't vote to go back to chaos. Don't vote to wipe out the gains we have made. Elect Progressive DEMOCRATIC Cendidates! (Paid Advertisement) bdr. home completely furnished, | immediate occupancy.
