""GREAT SINNER" ' OPENING SUNDAY, CAPITOL THEATRE “The Great Sinner” is the Capi- | tol's feature starting Sunday for a | three day run. Lured on by his attractive fellow train-passenger, Pauline Ostrovsky | (Ava Gardner), the brilliant young | writer, Fedor (Gregory Peck), fol- |lows her off the train at the play- | 8round resort of Wiesbaden and dis- | covers her to be an habitual patron | of the Casino’s gambling rooms. | After a number of meetings, the | serious writer and the reckless girl | fall in love but Fedor now knows | that gambling is in Pauline's blood |just as it is in the blood of her | father, General Ostrobsky (Walter | Huston). | On the strength of an expected | inheritance from his rich and ailing mother, Madame Ostrovsky (Ethel Barrymore), the General has gam- bled his way into an enormous debt to the casino’s ruthless manager, Armand De Glasse (Melvyn Doug- las), but staves off collection of his debt by offering Pauline’s hand to De Glasse as a pledge. Determined to cancel this obliga~ tion, Fedor risks his life savings on the roulette wheel and in a spec- tacular coup wins more than enough to free Pauline of De Glasse’s domi- nation. Fedor and Pauline plan to leave Weisbaden but the writer has now heen caught in the power of the casino and on the eve of their departure he again gambles and loses his entire fortune. From this point on he goes rapidly down the ladder of degradation, pawning his possessions, borrowing and even | entering into petty thefts. But the story does not end here | and there are many thrilling twists before an equally thrilling finale. FIGHT DOPE Three fights last night turned out as follows: At Hollywood, Calif. — John L. GRABLE - DAILEY FEATURE TONIGHT AT 20TH CENTURY ““When My Baby Smiles at Me,” the new Betty Grable-Dan Dmleyi feature filmed in Technicolor opens | tonight at the 20th Century The- | atre. When the picture was being planned, the studio decided that only George Jessel should produce it. One of the greatest showmen of all times, Jessel has presented some of the screen’s finest show business stories including “The Dolly Sis- ters” and “I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now.” In the filming of “When My Baby | Smiles at Me,” Jessel brought a world of personal experience and sentiment. He put all of his fabulous “know how” into this film. Explain- ing his extra special enthusiasm for the picture, Jessel says: “This is a story about a boy and a girl in the burlesque business— and what a business that was. It was the West Point for many great artists—Weber and Fields, Sam Bernard, David Warfield in the old days; and stars who are still going strong today—Eddie Cantor, Fannie Brice, Bert Lahr, Leon Errol, Sophie Tucker—and, if you’ll pardon the expression, even me, George Jes- sel.” (G TAKE TIGHT ONE FROM ELKS Second Half Stand:ngs W L Pct GB Elks o . 667 — Coast Guard 2 2 500 % Moose ... 8 383 1 After a week’s enforced rest for both the players and the pitchers, the Coast Guard and Elks played al- most perfect ball last night in a duel of pitchers with the Guard com- ing out on top, 2 to 1.
