DEFENSE SET AFTER MOCK ATOM RAID SEATTLE, July 18—P—Seattle, which had nearly 40,000 persons killed—theoretically—in two atom bombings a week ago, is as well pre- pared for such an emergency as is possible now, Mayor William F. | Devin said today. Devin met with governors of four states and officials from military and civilian agencies in Washing- ton, D.C., London, England, and Ottawa® at a critique of the civil defense plan For an entire week these officials will give opinions and advice on solutions to the defense problem which the Seattle Civil Defrase Board tackled after the mock bumb- ings last week. Theoretically, ‘were two bombs dropped, hours apart. The first ex-; ploded underwater in Elliott Bay, ! fronting the city at 6:50 am. That would have caused 6,610 deaths from fatal radiation, 5,690 serious injuries and 1,750 hospitalization cases. The second and more damaging, came a little after 3 pm. It ex- ploded 2,500 feet in the air over the Ballard district, north of the main business district. This was figured as the most deadly, killing between 25,000 and 32,000. “We také the position in Seattle that any kind of & disaster is a civil responsibility,” Devin said. el Grimy rescue crews have re- newed their search for three men still trapped in a burning lead mine at Lark, Utah. WAINWRIGHT SAN ANTONIO, Tex., July 18— (M — Jonathan M. Wainwright thinks the United States should get tough in Korea. ‘Wainwright, hero of Bataan and Corregidor, believes retaliation should be the “only answer” to atrocities in Korea. The 66-year-old retired General, who suffered tor- tures and long imprisonment by the Japanese, brought up the sub- ject of atrocities in an interview with the Associated Press. “I read that the North Koreans took some of our men captive, tied their hands behind their backs and shot them in the face. I will say, unequivocally, that were I com- manding in Korea, I would meet that situation by giving captives the same treatment. The Japs did that to some of my men. I think the only answer is retaliation.” The old campaigner, 45 years a soldier, was interviewed on the screened porch of his fine San An- tonio home, WANTED to lease or sub-lease—I‘ FOR SALE ; : JUNEAU—Behrends LARGE daveno, chair and break- fast set.
