Secretary | General Trygve Lie to all U.N. mem- | bers supporting the anti-aggresgfon resolution to give effective aid—if possible, ground forces—to stop the Korean Reds. Australian Prime | | Minister Robert G. Menzies was onl hand for the discussion. British and Australian ships and planes are already fighting in Ko- rea, and there has been talk of at least token ground forces, even though Britain is heavily committed to fighting Communists in other Asia areas, particularly Malaya. President Truman will report by radio to the nation Wednesday night on the situation in South Ko- rea, where the Americans have vir- tually written off Taejon and weie preparing to fall back to more iug- ged country possibly about 35 miles to the southeast, around Kumchon Loss of Taejon would be more} of a psychological than a strategic defeat, Col. M. P. Echols of Mac- Arthur’s headquarters told report- ers. It is a low-lying rice paddy ter- ritory, difficult to defend against flanking and enveloping movements. Echols said the Reds must have taken quite a beating in breaking the Kum river line, both from the stiff ground resistance and the un- relenting pounding of Allied planes. The enemy timetable has slowed, he said, pointing out the Communists averaged only six miles a day down the west coast. He praised the U.S.} 24th Division for a heroic 17-day stand against overwhelming odds. F. Ghiglione, chief engineer of the Alaska Road Commission, with the Anchorage firm of Breeden and Smith low bidders. Six firms entered figures for the job, which will cross the Savage |River at Milepost 14 on the 100- mile park road. The bridge will replace a 25-year-old timber stiuc- ture and will be built downstream ifrom the present crossing. Ghiglione said the award will not be made for several days pending the straightening out of several technical points in the bids. The Anchorage firm bid $84,965, considerably lower than the com- mission’s estimate' of $153,000 for the work. Other bids were as follows: Den- ali Construction Co., Anchorage, $157,920; Munter Construction Co., Seattle, $154,705; Southern Con- structors, Fairbanks, $125,162; Mor- rison-Knudson, Seattle, $111,036; Airport Machinery Co., Anchorage, $96,483.84. Big surprise te commission en- gineers and other bidders present at the opening was the firm's #.d for furnishing concrete for the job. Where the commission estimated this would cost $102,000, and otlier firms bid from $60,000 to more than $80,000 for this section of work, the Breeden and Smith concern put a figure down of only $32,000.
