Frank Colman’s first inning three- | run homer was all the Rainiers needed. Hector Brown, Seattle’s starting hurler, got credit for the win al- though he gave way to southpaw Al Gerheauser in the eighth when the Beavers threatened to knot the count. Hollywood’s Art Schallock tossed a five-hitter at the San Franciscc Seals, beating them 2-1 for his first victory this season in‘the first meet- ing of the clubs this year. Oakland’s’ treatment of Los An- zeles was not only worse, it lacked iny semblance of cordiality; namely 18-2. The Oaks batted around in the first inning for three runs but that was just a warmup. In the eighth they really poured it on, 15 men yoing to bat and producing 10 runs Oakland's third baseman, Billy Herman, had two homers, twc singles and two walks for a perfect night at bat. Meantime, Sacramento journeyed to San Diego and lost, 6-5. It was a see-saw struggle in which Max West scored the eventual winning run in the sixth on his walk, a single and an infield out. The series openers left the lead- ing Hollywood Stars five games ihead of Oakland. Each slugger attained his imme- diate goal last night but DiMag's was by far the more-satisfying. Joe collected two hits to drive in three runs and lead the New York Yankees to an important 8-2 triumph over the Cleveland In- dians. The victory, coupled with Washington's 4-2 victory over De- troit boosted the runnerup Yankees to within one game of the Ameri- can League leading Tigers. Stan slammed one hit—a home run—but it didn’t prevent the New York Giants from gaining their first victory of the season over his St Louis Cardinals, 3-2. The defeat knocked the Cards out of a first place tie with Brooklyn. The Dodgers thrashed the Cincinnati Reds, 8-2, ‘o take a game lead over the Red- birds. Boston'’s Red Sox and Philadel- phia’s Phillies, third in their re- spective leagues, gained some round. The Red Sox triumphed ver the Chicago White Sox, 5-3, while the Phils toppled the Pitts- burgh Pirates, 7-3. The St. Louis Browns, behind Ned Garver, shut out Lou Brissie and the Philadelphia Athletics, 1-0. The Chicago Cubs won a 10-inning struggle from Boston's Braves, 4-3. DiMaggio now joins 41-year-old Luke Appling of the White Sox and 10-year-old Wally Moses of the Ath- ‘etics as the only active performers with 2,000 or more hits. DiMagglo, 35, is in the midst of his 12th active year. Eighty-five nther major leaguers have reached the two-grand mark in the past. Ty Cobb, one of baseball’s immor- tals, holds the record for base hits with an amazing total of 4,191 in 24 years. MOOSE WIN, - MOOSE LOSE, ELKS DITTO The Moose and Elks nines last night both won and lost a game. The Moose won 7 to 4 and the Elks won 9 to 0. This happened when the Moose nine lacked two players having enough men present to play oft a rained-out game of Monday night. Hence, the Elks won the league game by a forfeit, 9-0. But, the Elks had two extra men which they lent the Moost team for a five-inning practice game. This the Moose won 7-4. Pitching for the Moose was Shep~ ard. For the Elks, Houston started with Snow relieving in the third. Snow’s slow ball proved to be the one the Moose couldn’t hit. Scoring for the Moose were Nefl- son 2, Krause, Daugherty 2, Shep~ ard and Sanford. The Elks scored Snow 2, Cope and Houston. GAME THURSDAY The Coast Guard will attempt to tie for first place in the league when they take on the Elks Thursday at 6:30 pm. in Firemen's park. Yes- terday’s forefit gave the Elks a full gflme lead on the Coast Guard. They are here! Z-B Mauser Hornets A'fine bolt action complete with double set trigger . . . The seal hunters’ favorite.
