That wculd be almost seven times the Territory’s .1947 require- ments, the commission said in‘a report on a survey made at the request of the Seattle district of the Army Engineers. The commission said its esti- mates were made on the assump- tion that in 1960, Alaska’s wdod pulp industry and Arctic oil fields| will be developed and present mil- itary activity will be continued. The report pointed out that %:- aska’s population centers are ot connected electrigally and prob- ably will not be within the fore- | seeable future because of distances climate and terrain involved. It said high costs of construc- tion and operation have resulted in high electric rates and are largely responsible for slow development of power in Alaska. "iuwm'“’ 7 No one can convince Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Higgins, Seattle, 7 — that Alaska is not the best vaca- e f £ 3 ‘f tion land there is. 7 Since they left Seattle by Pan American a week ago, they have seen nething but perfect weather and gorgeous scenery. A day’s stop in Ketchikan, a two-day visit with Mr. and Mrs. John Cushing in Sitka (where Mr. Higgins caught his first fish), and the last two days in Juneau, have put Alaska at the top of the list of places they wish to visit again. Mr. Higgins is manager of fhe contract department of the Bdn Marche, although his present trip is a vacation, he is calling on Al- askan friends with whom he has had business in Seattle. The Higginses were to go to Anchorage today by Pacific Nor-y thern, expecting to be to the west- ward for several days before going to Fairbanks. They hope to stop again in Juneau southbound. While here, they have guests at the Baranof Hotel. HOSPITAL NOTES Matt Koivula of Hawk Inlet, Wil- liam Eglar of Tenakee, and Thom- as Whiteside were admitted to St. Ann’s Hospital yesterday.
