OLYMPIA, Wash., Mary 23—®— | The cry of “gold” on the Olympic peninsula brought a rush of busi- ness to the office of state land commissioner Jack Taylor today. Approximately 20 persons have applied for rights to search state- owned land south of Port Angeles for the glittering metal. One of the would-be prospect- ors, Jesse J. Lorenzen, Seattle, said gold-bearing gravel assaying $120 to $150 a ton was discovered last week by Mrs, Grace Melick on her ranch about four miles south of Port - Angeles. He said Mrs. Melick discovered the gravel after ice broke a dam about two miles south of her nlace, releasing a flood of water down a gully. Under state law the applicants may obtain rights for two years to prospéct on state land for sam- ples. If they make a strike, they apply to the commissioner for a 20-year mining contract Which gives the state”four per cent of e take plus a rental fee.
