This feature opens at the | Capitol Theatre Sunday. Based on an original story idea by Gene Kelly, himself, and Stan- ley Donen, the new Technicolor tuner places the emphasis on com- edy, music and romance. It's the |story of a song-and-dance team, intage 1906, who put away their greasepaint in the spring and join a big league baseball team. There they score hard fought victories both on the diamond and in the ladies who ever wore carsets! With songs by Roger Edens, Betty Somden and Adolph Green, the musical numbers present Sinatra at his singing best and also give Kelly a novel background for some of his most spectacular dance crea- tions. Esther Williams, presented with her first real opportunity to sing and dance on the screen, portrays an athletic-minded young lady who takes charge of a baseball team. Betty Garrett plays Sinatra's ro- mantic interest in the new film; Edward Arnold is cast as a gamb- |ler; and another featured role is | filled by Jules Munshin, remem- bered as the comic waiter in “Eas- ter Parade.” \TWO GUEST SPEAKERS AT SOROPTIMIST CLUB Two speakers gave exceptionally interesting talks to Soroptimists at the luncheon meeting of the club on Friday. Henry Haugen, Juneau High School student reviewed his winning examination paper on the United Nations, written for a re- cent contest. aneously, with great poise and sub- tle humor, his presentation was so fine that members of the club of work in which he could make use of his public speaking ability. He was presented with $5, awarded by the Soroptimist Club. With him as guest of the club was John Richardson who placed second in the contest. Mildred R. Hermann, telling the club of her part in the statehood ‘hearmg before the Senate Com- mittee in Washington, last month, stressed the informal aspects of the meeting with humorous ac- count of some of the things which happened there and which did not !make ‘the headlines. Mrs. Her- |mann said that she felt she had been able to show the Committee |that Alaska could finance statehood without substantial increases in taxation. As sponsors of Brownie Troop No. 3, Soroptimists were issued an invitation to be guests of the troop at their tea to be held on Satur- |day, May 2. Because he never took time out from his “genius-ing” to get a de- |gree, and since he is eligible to receive an award of $10,000 as soon |as he can get one, the cosmopolitan | Mr. Belvedere is most anxious to go through the school with no regard | for the secondary pleasures usually associated with a college education. Yet the amazing Mr. Belvedere becomes the “biggest man on'the campus.” In fact he is “it” but Shirley Temple must be convinced and there is plenty of entertainment | in this big feature.
