They either want to be Senators, | | judges or governor. They want something out of the state. Also check the' testimony. One witness who said he had bem in 'Alaska 32 yenrs said that every real Alaskan “wants state- hood.” I have been in Alaska over fifty years, and I agree that no one is against statehood when the time comes and we get an |enabling act that will make it pos- \sible to support statehood. i But I don't want taxes increased to such a point that my family will have to sell out and go south. Mrs, Hermann said that she only paid $60 in tdxes this year. She {also was designated as a tax ex- ‘pert How does she figure her tueswhflepnldonlyseotn taxes? She has an income as an attorney and an income from ap- artments in her house and also roomers. She must be an expert to have paid only $60. Also, what about her trips east for her var- jous organizations, aren’t those ad- ded to incomes? This $60 would in- iclude her business license tax of $25 and her $5 School Tax and {10% of her Federal Income Tax. {What about her license as an ap- artment house owner? = Or does that count? Another witness said that he didn’t know a single World War II veteran who didn’t want statehood. That is covering & lot of Terri- tory. better deal from the State than !they did out of Stanley McCutch- eon’s company—that still owed $22,000 to the Veterans Tax fund two years after “the tax was over, \bey can’t expect much. ‘The rest ifi“‘ paid our Veterans Tax. I hope people are analyzing some of the things the witnesses have said back in Washington.
