Anyone can see the merit of increasing the population of Alaska, but the 1949 Territorial Legislature couldn’t go for G. E. Almquist’s methods. He is running for the Senate now, you know. Anyway, Almquist really had aplan. His idea was to give old age pensions to persons not citizens of the United States and who had lived in Alaska for 1 year. We can overlook his vote to move the capitol from Juneau to Palmer, but his generosity with our tax money on this one brought protests from the Pioneers’ Igloo of Ketchikan and hosts of others. When California liberalized its pension laws with regard to residence they came flocking from all other states. Luckily the other legislators at Juneau saw the fallacy of the proposal, and Almquist did not prevail. There are four candidates for the two i No, vou cant operate il without a city license- Senate seats. Pick two who will help run Alaska on 4 business-like basis, and not a give-away and gimme plan. That is, unless you don’t mind some- one coming up here for a year and then living the rest of his life in Florida at your expense. Almquist didn’t mind spending your tax dollars that way.
